Success as a hair stylist it’s in your hands!

As a stylist we strive to become a success to be fully booked to get new recommendation to earn a great salary to be the best we can. But sadly in so many cases somewhere along the way this changes or never happens why?  What went wrong?  Why do some get so disillusioned even resentful.Why do so many quit the industry! Why do some get by but are full of anger and resentment about both their employer and indeed fellow staff members Why? Time to be honest! It’s time to seek some help? Get re focused and remember why you started on this journey of self discovery looking for creative success. You had a vision a gaol what went wrong?

If this is you!

It’s time for some honest reflection to ask your self some soul searching questions starting with the big one Why? Did you become a stylist? Followed by. Do you enjoy being a stylist? what do you want from being a stylist? What were the goals? What were the aspirations that brought you into this industry? What are you prepared to do to reach your goals and dreams!

There are so many avenues to explore so many skills to gain. There is so much to give and yet so much to gain. Yes you have to give things away to get them back it’s the way of the universe. But all of this comes at a cost nothing in life is easy or free it takes hard work commitment! It takes constant training and updates of all the skills we have. All that we know and all we have yet to learn try and discover. These are challenging times for everyone.Those challenges and demands being day to day running and managing of the salon and staff team members. As stylists working in a salon being part of the team we should be involved in the salons success.

How can we do this? By being and staying positive and upbeat. With so much global uncertainty so much negativity in the news you must think and be positive and up beat both in your out look and in what you project. I have little time for negative attitude or thinking it’s destructive on so many levels both in personal and  work life. These skills cover every aspect of our industry. From those key things that are at the very heart of our daily routine and business success .

Service skills. Communication .Consultation. The experience we offer and create.

We have so many tools available to us to research and study our craft.The Internet the world wide web books. These are really good for learning about service and consultation skills after all Service and clients are our business. We must not forget the other aspects of our trade  the practical hands on creative side this need to be fed and stimulated sharing idea’s with team mates work colleges. We must also make sure we are up to date with product knowledge and technical knowledge.

Just being a busy salon stylist can and will get to be quite routine if you don’t push and challenge your self. It is very easy to get complacent take what we do and indeed out clients and the very fact of being busy as a given ! not always the case. Real success is to challenge your self and continually grow. Fear can hold us back as stepping out side ones comfort zone pushing the envelope is not a comfortable place to be for many of us. Get involved in the salon training nights. Maybe become a platform artist or educator. for major colour company. consider entering some competitions, photographic work .These can be good for both individual stylist and  the whole salon it moral and image.

Remember that the more you give out through sharing skills and experience the more that will come back to you. This career is for you to manage and steer. It’s a journey and adventure you have no idea of what opportunities lie ahead for you. All yours to grasp all you have to do is aim high and challenge your self and those around you. Dont settle for second best. Have high standards. Stay up beat focused. Constantly challenge your self and those around you.

Professional groups representing the hairdressing industry

This is topic on our industry our future can we all make and accept change?

What is the way forward for our industry? How do we strike a balance one that represents businesses and Salon owners yet works with training bodies and institutions.One that fairly reflects every aspect of our industry from the trainee and or apprentices to stylists and salon owners one that collaborates and works in unison with further education colleges academies and institutions. Is it possible ? I like to think it is but change has to happen.Thinking has to change a new chapter need to be written!

Having just attended an industry discussion day by one of the many Training bodies / Institutions funded by government working to government guidelines. It came to my attention that this discussion had no representation by any one from the hairdressing industry in the private sector other than me ! Its was not a very well attended gathering all females and all representing colleges, further education, and private institutions. The big question is are these publicly funded groups and bodies out of touch with what’s going on at salon level should they try and remedy this? The challenges facing salon owners staff retention training and apprenticeship programs re gigged re named re vamped submerged in red tape and paper work. No mention of collaboration between salons and colleges no passion no vision lots of acronyms and abbreviated words. “ACE” “SASE” ‘ASCL” who cares do students trainee’s ? salon owners? No they want facts they want easy to understand easy to implement ! Shared within passion by motivated inspiring innovative speakers. Who are interesting and engaging!

A minimum wage for apprentices was discussed frankly so out of touch with reality and hardly surprising that so many young people drop out or fail to get qualified as stylists. When having open discussion about any aspects of the industry it’s not representative of feelings points of view much less needs and concerns if salon owners and indeed all bodies related to the industry are not consulted. Education and training is as we all know really important!  But if it’s not done listening to the wants needs and concerns of the salon owners the end consumer of these trained up young stylist whats it all for???

We in many cases have a system now with little or no collaboration between Further education colleges, training institutions and salons. More time needs to be put into understanding salon owners and the industry more hairdressers and industry professional need to be attracted into these bodies bring to the table hands on experience and skill knowledge about products. Bring to the fore front the dangers of some products.Working with manufacture to be more transparent about some products and how they work the chemistry they contain.

Goals and vision for collaboration with salons working with Further education colleges for work experience less red tape less bureaucracy less government intervention in an industry they do not understand at street level. I went to this meeting my mistake was not asking what the agenda was or the format was for discussion was it a forum or did it have an agenda that allowed for discussion and opinion and raising questions. I was also shocked that apart from myself  the representation of trainers and further education representatives were all female. In an industry that claims that only males make it to celebrity level. Something I dispute know ing some very talent female stylist and platform artists! But why do not more males get involved at college level an area dominated by women at all levels from senior management to in salon training levels.

I think these professional bodies all do a great job. But i also feel that they need to do much more to attract and get involved where it counts they need to strike up communication with salon owners listen to their concerns encourage collaboration innovative thinking that got beyond just training manuals and strict guide lines. Hairdressing is a passionate creative industry when events are staged they should reflect this not be bland and beige. When inspiring people, when doing presentation. we have so many tools available to us now, the day of power point and just standing talking in mono tone just does not work! It’s does not inspire nor does it attract a true cross section of the industry and all the talented successful business people who could contribute so much. Although this is a Uk example i would be interested to hear feed back from other  countries what works for you on this international issue . Is it any different for you?

Do you think that professional bodies should have more professional representation when it comes to direction and planing on education training and all aspects related to our industry. Should these bodies have to collaborate more with salons and stylist.

Should apprentices be asked for an opinion on the training they aregiven and the model they worked with? How was there experience? Salon owners institutions stylist businesses we have to work together to develop our industry secure it’s future stability and  make it work for all of our future an that of new stylist and trainee’s coming into our industry.

The hair salon: The experience business

What is the hair salon or Spa? What business are we in? What is it we are selling or producing? Yes it’s. Hair cutting or colouring or a variety of the many services we offer as a salon or spa. Consider this we are really selling or providing an experience.Oh and we are the product that makes this happen.

Lets take a look at this together:

We are in the business of pamperingDo you think your client comes to you wanting expecting the same as last time! NO! They trust you. They come to you because they like you. How easy it is to forget that we have the power the skill the knowledge to make them feel special look great.it’s so easy to get complacent.

Where does this all stem from the Consultation. Our time to review past styles and looks and suggest the new! The upgrade! That shared suggestion of a new colour a new look. It shows you care ! It’s not selling. It advising it’s what you me we are paid for ‘expertise’.

This process of taking the time to talk and assess with your client should happen every time they come for an appointment. Not only with new clients and then on odd times there after. We are constantly looking for and indeed advertise for new clients: Did you know that on average over 50% of new clients to a salon never return for a second visit! Maybe just maybe we need to look at this! Maybe we need to do something differently or make some changes.

For change to happen:

How do we make change happen, what do we need? Firstly we need to know that if nothing changes if we keep doing the same old thing we get the same old results! Change is scary change is challenging! How about change is exciting. No one likes change it takes us out side our comfort zone. However scary it is such a positive move to make to reassess goals and vision to take control. To honestly look at what you can do differently where those weaknesses might be.

Have a goal as a salon to keep as many new clients as possible  look at what you do what you offer and how you perform. The service.That consultation. The salon and indeed staff image the atmosphere. The right team with the same vision on the right tracks!

An example of change.

Last week i gave my wife a new cut and colour. I gave her a lesson in styling the new look. I gave her  a brush. Today she was doing her hair ad i suggested that for the new look to work she had to make  a change! If she intended on styling her hair the way it was before then it would not look any different. For change to happen she had to change the way she was styling her hair! She laughed and agreed but it’s not easy she said! True but nothing is unless you practice you get out what you put in! I re did her hair for her and suggested she practice doing things differently! Thus making change happen. Lesson change is not easy!

Asking for help. Doing research.

It takes a bigger person to ask for help than to just muddle along. Expecting different results without making any change. Admitting to ones self that change is needed and that it might well take some time commitment and work. But know this every thing is possible. With time patients and willingness for change to happen.

Apprenticeships in Hairdressing. Facts thoughts.

Lets consider apprenticeship and the training it offers! Is it right for you as a salon or as someone looking to train to become a hairdresser and stylist?

Is becoming a apprentice the way forward for you. Is doing an apprenticeship the best training. Will it afford you the best opportunities once you have finished your training?

Here in the uk it’s fair to say that the government are very keen to promote doing an apprenticeship in most trades. Many years ago I myself did an apprenticeship much has changed since those days when at the age of 16 my parents signed papers along with a salon owner committing me to a three year apprentice program. On Reflection I was cheap labor, shampoo boy, cleaner, dogs body. Never given any opportunity to go to college day release.

Today with so many training options and the government keen to promote apprenticeships do your research firstly make sure it’s the right career and profession for you.talk with professional in the industry ask questions. Then and only then research your best way forward who is offering the best scheme be clear about the training and indeed time scale and format of all instruction. take charge of your career  an apprenticeship is based on trust but also mutual respect its a contact to train and gain experience in exchange for working make sure this is the case! make  sure you will get qualified and certified to the required level.

I also believe that we should have a body here in the Uk to over see apprenticeship training and standards one for hairdressers over seen by qualified industry professional who only goal and mandate it to raise standards. I think that fellow professional internationally would agree that this is the case in many countries states and provinces. We have to have training and standards. We have to offer the very best in training and should strive to have a high standard of qualified creative free thinking talent young professional coming into and representing our industry.

These days so much has changed and standards of qualification have to be reached.  lets take a look although law’s standards differ on a global scale i think the thinking is not that different from country to country.In my previous posting i discuss the topic of choice of career direction chair or booth rental freelance or mobile as an alternative to being a commissioned paid employed stylist in a salon.

Lots to consider as a way froward for both the salon owner business person and stylist with their own vision and goals for their career.

What is an apprenticeship? 
Apprenticeships enable you to. Practically learn your trade, as well as studying to gain the theory and enable you to receive your qualification. It is a marriage of hands on work experience, as well as having time to get day release to college for your NVQ qualification. They are aimed at young people aged 16 and over, to enable them to earn money whilst gaining experience in a hairdressing environment. Equally importantly the experience gained working in salon environment is invaluable An apprenticeship in hairdressing will normally involve, you working in the salon every day bar one or two when you will be attending college. It can take up to 5 years to qualify as a hairdresser but if your committed work hard show willing this does not have to be the case. So if you have the patience and the commitment to keep at it. Then an apprenticeship would be for you, gaining the experience of salon working  at the same time as doing the college work. The alternative would be college and then having to then find, a salon to gain the experience and skills to be qualified in all aspects of the hairdressing industry.


Are you creative good with your hand? Do you like people? Are you prepared to offer service?



Why do an apprenticeship? 

An apprenticeship enables you to earn a small income.  Whilst working and gaining qualifications needed to become certified .You can use an apprenticeship to gain NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) levels which is what you need to become a qualified hairdresser The main advantage to you as an apprentice, you will also gain many years experience in the practical environment and learn communication skills, people skills, things that are not always best taught at college, as opposed to all that time studying just the theory at college. Employers like to see that their future employees are keen to learn, but also see it as away to bring new energy and levels of talent into the salon team. Because of this salon owners are usually, very keen to take on apprentices who are committed enthusiastic and willing to work learn be a team player, it’s not always easy but it can be very rewarding and fun.

Will I enjoy an apprenticeship? 

When thinking about undertaking a hairdressing apprenticeship, You should be certain that this is the career path you wish to take, hard work for little financial reward long hours. You need to be really focused to be successful, know that you will need to put in the work and organise your time really well to balance salon work, college and personal time, not always easy. I would say it’s a life style choice certainly not for everyone. But the rewards can be many, in ways one cannot explain  you must be prepared. To be responsible for all aspects of your life and work ,finding time at work with studying in order to get the most out of it, this can be very challenging, its all about balance. You can’t just work in the salon and not go to college, because this doesn’t meet the requirements of partaking in an apprenticeship scheme. You should also be  prepared to be able to, work as part of a team and as an individual . Make you own choices decisions and live with the consequences for you choices hairdressing has no room for a huge EGO!

Lets face some facts! Answer some questions!



 

How long does an apprenticeship take? 
This can vary from 1 year to 5; it is dependent on the contract you have drawn up with your employer and on your own ability also.

As a norm 3 years of hard work should get you through to level 2NVQ,. it can take up to five years but within in this you could be, performing many salon tasks. By proving you worth and talent, some salons will promote you and give you opportunity to grow and advance, we all learn and grow at a different pace.

How do I apply to become an apprentice? 

You can call the National Apprenticeships Helpline on 08000 150600. They will provide you with information as to where your nearest opportunities are. They will advise you on the career you wish to take, they will have access to many employers and be able to advise you on where learning providers are in your area.

You can also get in touch with employers directly. Ask them if they take on apprentices or would be interested in doing so. If they do. Then they will probably arrange to meet you, as they would a proper employee and interview you, to ensure you would be a good investment for them to make

This being said you should also make sure. It’s the right place for you, ask to chat with staff members.maybe offer to do a few trial days. This is a big decision. This is a two way thing both parties have to know agree and be committed to this journey together. Not all salon owners have the best interest of trainee’s at heart! Some look at it a cheap labor  so ask the right questions make a list! compare what an apprenticeship offers against college or paying to take a shorter route career path by going to a private Academy ! lots to investigate.

Become part of a team! Learn how to communicate! Maybe gain some stage presence !


 Use the internet as a tool to help you find. Where takes on apprentices in your area. Additionally, look in your local newspaper and visit your nearest job center. You have to make sure you choose the right apprentice scheme to embark upon as well, so look upon it as finding a job. Check out you college. Find out about the courses, meet some of the instructors, just because they are qualified standards of commitment vary greatly. Make sure you do your research, before applying to ensure that you would be happy, working in the salon you choose and the college you have to attend. This is a big decision.

Explore you creativity discover your self! Hard work but endless possibilities!
