Chair or booth rental Mobile freelance.The challenges

Do you own a salon? Do you employ your staff? Maybe have chair renters are you the manager of such an establishment? Are you an employee? Do you rent a chair. So many question so many options!  I raise this topic as platform to discussion.

Still focusing on service the salon experience but looking at it from a different angle I would like to do this in the order as above.

As a salon owner and employer how do you set a good example? How do you employ the right staff? How do you create the environment that projects ambiance,one that looks amazing yet has the right level of efficient offering professional service. A place that is welcoming creative filled with highly skilled passionate caring stylists. The only way this is possible is to be  hands on with your team leading managing running your salon. From a point of view of having retaining and attracting the right staff in this instance the only way forward for you is to have Salon control.

This includes employing staff paying commission rewarding those who succeed.

As an owner you have very little control over the stylist hours. How they operate if you choose the chair rental route then the stylist renting space from you  running a mini business within  your salon. This can cause issues over pricing hours worked commitment to the salon the greater good!

Some times short term gain is long term agony.Commission creates motivation employing and rewarding staff creates team spirt and friendly competition with in the salon. Greater staff incentive to succeed be the best you can and reap the rewards.

So like so many aspects of business it’s about choices making a decision and making it work the instant knowledge of regular rent or the challenges and rewards of truly running and building a successful business with loyal staff and clients.

So moving on. Do you have a manager?

If so this has to be a partnership that works give and take listen support each other. As a manager you get to not only over see many aspects of the running of the salon but you are also directly responsible for staff employment moral and most importantly service standards knowledge and education.

You get to help to creating the atmosphere the image. you get to grow the salon help it watch it succeed and grow and should be rewarded accordingly. Salon owners that take advantage of hard working managers will lose them along with clients and staff if they don’t respect the role they play and what they contribute.

If you allow Chair rental. How do you control theses stylists when they are paying you rent? How many do you want on a rental agreement. how do you attract them? What hours will be covered by them? How do you manage this when they are in business of running a mini business within your business? Do you provide the receptionist ?

Who keeps the books and takes care of the financial side of things from. Taking clients payment to invoices? Ordering managing stock. Dealing with all tax records and making payment of said taxes?

What support service do you offer them? How do you have an influence on the standard the service they offer? To have a business totally reliant on Chair rental especially if you are not active as a stylist in your own salon or have an understanding of our industry the salon dynamics is quite a risk.

As someone renting a chair. What do you get for your monthly fee? What are your expectations? you and you alone are your business, no owner or manger to blame if things are not going well! if your clients switch to a different stylist or move salon. how to you cope when wanting holidays?

Most stylist who go into a chair rental situation are well established in many cases resent the salon owner who they feel are making a mint out of their work! From you and your client’s Chair renters are not typically team players nor do they want to start their own business. They are not always the best organised in many cases don’t think the what being self employed means or what the ramification might be.

As a renter you still need to be able to have a relationship with the salon owner  you are also responsible for retaining maintaining and bringing in new business providing your working stock, being on time, offering that personal service

Then the things that cross over come to mind does salon owner provide any services in the form of help assistance? Do they keep a level of retail products? Do they provide a receptionist to book greet clients? Do they offer any help with regard to book keeping your personal business management! a repeat from the salon owners point of view but as i said it’s a to way street many aspects will cross over eacht other.

These are all things to consider things that cut into that i just want to do hair and keep 100% of the take it can be quite complex.

Insurance both personal third party liability who is responsible for this? It would be my  suggestion both parties are responsible why? One as owner  providing the salon a place for clients to come to the stylist as the one performing the tasks applying the products taking a fee, both should be covered how is this dealt with?much to consider.

With all these different examples of in salon situations one thing is inherent the need to communicate the need to work together the need to create the best environment and standard of service to retain clients. a  healthy codependent relationship built on trust understanding and striving for a common goal stability and business success.

In my book it’s a no brainer the challenge and having the control being master of my own ship and destiny wins every time. Find and work with the right team the success and reward will follow.Nothing good in life is ever free or easy. If it is if it seem’s to good to be true if it’s a business plan that offer’s instant gratification.

Whilst Chair rental works for many on both sides think about what as a salon owner or some one about to start a salon it is you really want.Don’t lose sight of your dream your vision your goal. How do you want the service’s you offer delivered.

I do not suggest that stylist renting chairs are all unprofessional i know from experience this is not the case. However for both side it is a union that should not be entered into lightly.

Maybe as a stylist your the owner of your own small freelance business maybe your home based or make house calls, maybe your a booth renter and freelance.

 In many ways some of the above does and will relate to you. the main thing here is you often work alone,yes you are very busy,but how often do you really interact with other stylist’s and industry professional? how current are you really be honest? How often do you take the time find the time and say ,Time for a tune up ! I need to step things up? I need a refresher i’m feeling a little stale ! well? it happens to the best of us. My bet would be not very often if ever? your either to busy or convince your self that it’s not important! ego talking you know it all!!!

Be warned not addressing this visiting it can in the long term effect your business and so be something you will regret!

We all need to look in the mirror from time to time a little one on one, so often the demands on day to day life make this impossible. Make that time find that time to reflect on your goals be honest about how current you are is your vision still on track! How up to date are your skills, techniques, even product knowledge.

However much the rewards are working alone is very isolating even if your booth or chair renting unless you make  a point of having interaction with others. We need to share and interact with other like minded professional it’s how we grow and learn and develop.

WHY IS THIS?

The skill the techniques the standard of service should not change or be effected because we work alone or in a small team, yet in so many cases the need the want to stay updated and current gets pushed aside priorities !!

The key contributors to this is ourselves our own ‘EGO’ and fears we can so easily convince our selves that we know everything,We did our training got qualified we know it all.HUM to that! talking with others asking or seeking help or advise form others,indeed just sharing thoughts can give a whole new focus and out look on things. Remember it’s about you your vision of what really is success.

These days we have so many ways to connect with others,through internet groups and forums,get informed read reviews on shows and education events, no more excuses!

hang out for  awhile at your local distributor ,It’s a great way to meet stylist just like your self,chat about colour lines and products.With so many products available to us and so many coming to the market all the time it’s no wonder we could do with a little refresher form time to time. i know i do !

Be it technical work,cutting techniques, salon service and consultation skills. aspects of running a small or independent business. communicating with other industry professional .it’s all these things that we need to address keep up to date with and be honest about.

We need to put ‘EGO’ aside seek out the right source of help and be prepared to take constructive advise,Critical comments on how to improve.work with some one you respect who can work with you on the key investment in self.

Young talent training in hairdressing


Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR;  regular postings of fresh new topic’s

The future of our industry is new young talent they deserve the very best opportunities help advice and guidance. Yesterday I thought i was sharing  part of my experience with some young level 1 NVQ students  but no the exact opposite i was learning from them they were without knowing it giving to me. Opening my eyes to wants fears and aspirations. Giving in a look into the world and the challenges of these young people and the career they have chosen. I thank them all.

Communication sharing service.

The hair Salon and stylists. We all know that the hair industry has many different bodies watching over it supervising it. It has a standard of training that dictate reaching certain levels of the prescribed government training standards these we know here in the UK as NVQ in other countries this differs. We have academies. We have trained teaching professionals, we have colleges and apprenticeship schemes. We have teams of dedicated professional training and supporting these young stylists. We have professional bodies such a HABIA and many dedicated professional educators and consultants.

We have a wealth of young people attracted to our industry. Today I had the pleasure and the opportunity to spend some time with a class of these young training stylists. They have high expectation. They are lead to believe that they can be very successful in some cases reach celebrity status. Sadly this is not always realistic so many young people have expectations but don’t always realise just how committed they have to be to reach the top or how long that journey may take.

Training and sharing with these youngsters is a reminder of how hard it is starting out having left school facing the world and the idea of training for a new career. Tuff we have to be supportive and honest ready to help and offer advice. we asked if they would volunteer for experience in a salon they were all committed and would swap time for opportunity. This raises the question salon owners why don’t you work with your local college give these young stylists a chance! who knows you might just have the next big talent to discover and it would be so rewarding.

This being said my question and one i hope to explore in the coming weeks is. Why do standards vary so much from salon to salon? Why is the skill level so varied? Why does so much badly done hair wonder the streets?

My goal is to go into some salons discuss and report on this. Share a true and real version of how stylist see their industry. what their expectations are.

When wondering around my local area. I often take time to look into the salon’s I pass. It’s a habit caused from many years in our industry and a natural inquisitiveness. The questions i always ask my self are as follows:

Is it inviting? Does it say hey worth a look? Does it have kerb appeal?  You see it’s all about image and first impression you only get to make that once. be that the salon appearance to the first impression we as stylist make.

For me the big no no’s are. Staff standing in and around reception, chatting amongst themselves. Standing out side the front door smoking !!! A window so full of products you cannot see in. In many cases if you have a window work station make sure. The person using the chair is projecting everything that says who you are,what you can do.It’s a stage.

Decor,Street appeal. Image to be totally honest, so many places look a little sad and little neglected. Sadly the staff look the same, Yes they go to work they do their job, But it’s just that a job. Staff all looking professional well dressed and up beat.this does not have to be a uniform. But a keen sense of style and professionalism should be expected and presented. We after all in the fashion business. We are what we present we are the product that is us!!

It should be so much more it’s time for some honest reflection it’s time to make some changes are you ready?

These changes can be in Image. Appearance both salon and staff. Attitude. Service. Consultation. Clients get excited by change and improvements. This leadership from owners managers will lead to staff becoming more involved and committed it can and should be a exciting time.

Staff be they trainee’s or long standing staff members should challenge them selves to look and be professional at all times. Remember that we are in the service industry. Challenge our selves stay current with products, both retail and for salon use.

                              It’s all about style Image

We work in fashion we create image. Project that when you get ready for work, You don’t go out partying on Friday night looking anything but your best, So why would you not apply the same attention to presentation of ones self when going to work?

It’s all about. Image that first impression.Be it salon or self. think as the work place as stage you are the star act that way!!! My spending a afternoon with level one students hungry to learn frustrated that the process can seem slow wanting to know everything be hands on. This creative minds to to be stimulated and yet given structure and order a firm foundation of skill and knowledge delivered in an honest manner.

I write this with thanks to the students for being patient attentive and yet opening my eyes to how daunting and challenging the journey they are on must seem.

The Hair salon service and communication

It is my firm that belief that in this day and age and in such competitive times the only way to increase and expand your client base is through excellence in service, communication and technical ability. This can only be done through. Education. Team work and effective leadership by those who are training new stylists and apprentices .

Service and Communication let’s take a look into a salon.

The main reason for client loss from a salon is dissatisfaction from either the service or the final result. Taking short cuts. Compromising one’s standards and professional ethics. Leading to client dissatisfaction. When a client leaves a salon unhappy how much damage can they do to your reputation?

When a client leaves happy they will recommend you to others, they will get stopped in the street. Potentially a happy client will recommend you to 5 friends who in turn have 5 friends.

Guess what an unhappy client can and will do? You got it – 5 friends will leave with them.

Having that edge!

But after building up a strong client base with strong client retention do you ever wonder why every five to six weeks you have a somewhat quiet week with not a lot booked? You start to ask yourself the question, what am I doing wrong? Am I losing my touch? Well, let’s see.

We have all had one of these. That crazy Saturday could be any day you fitted all those extra clients in. You were on a role and had a huge money day.

You call your boss and say guess what I did today. You leave work on cloud nine thinking that’s it. Every day could be like this. I really feel I have made it.

Now let’s just think about this and break it down. Was it really a success?

You took short cuts, you compromised your clients who had services booked, you kept clients waiting, you rushed through things. Guess what – you lost clients. Instead of running the show you created chaos and did not give your regular clients your full attention and service. They go else where – and yes, they go with their 5 friends. So by having a crazy busy day it cost you. Short term gain meant long term loss. The key is service. Attention to detail. Making that client feel special. Creating that special time .A memory an experience that your client will talk about and share with others.

You will never get beyond having a 5 to 6 week lull until you look beyond the quick hit money – making day. You need time for the consultation. This is your time to shine, the time that reassures your client that they are special, that you are considerate and that you understand their needs and wants. Your client sees you are prepared to take that extra time to use your knowledge to make them feel comfortable and safe in a professional’s hands. It is this service that gets you talked about and recommended.

Learning the Basics and Building on Them

We assume that if a stylist is working in a salon they have satisfied the examination board and reached a professional NVQ standard of qualification.

In so many cases students leave college with a good solid basic knowledge of the industry and newly qualified – the world is their oyster. But after a couple of years they become disillusioned. They blame the industry, the products, the salon owner or other staff but never take a look in the mirror to see the real problem.

In so many cases we like to stay with the safe option, never step outside the box or push the envelope. A certain level ability is attained and then we sit back thinking we know it all [ego takes over]. You might think – the salon has education updates and product reviews. But you think you were at the last one two years ago so why go again since you have heard it all before.

 

It is very hard to improve without admitting that you have any weaknesses or a lack of knowledge in the first place. It’s like being at school and afraid to raise your hand  because you don’t understand. You worry that your question might be seen as silly but the only foolish question is the one you don’t ask.

To truly succeed in our industry we have to learn so many different skills related  to our job. These are not always in a manual. There are some life skills and some that are taught. The key is be honest with yourself. Education and knowledge is power. Know your limits and be honest about your ability and then keep learning.

A good example of this would be to do colour correction one has to have a solid knowledge of colour – both practical and theory.

 

Ask these questions. Can it be done? Should it be done? Can I do it? 9 times out of ten correction is colour that has been messed up at home or by another semi professional stylist.

 

So the question should be will the salon benefit from this being done? Will you as the stylist benefit from doing this? If the answer is yes then question, question question! Look, touch, consult other stylist team members and then decide how to proceed.

Whilst researching information on Wella colour, I came across this review of Koloston Colour on the website. The stylist said “I used the same colour on four different clients and never got the same colour twice. You cannot trust the swatch or the colour!”

For me this highlights perfectly all the issues raised. This stylist needs to look in that mirror to understand that the starting canvas was different in each case so the same results couldn’t be expected.

what exactly is needed? Let’s look at some technical skills.

Technical Skills – Colouring

  • Fully understanding of the colour wheel and laws of colour
  • Full understanding of specific colour line in salon and full knowledge of the colour manual
  • Basic colour application, re-growth application, balancing colour and refreshing colour
  • Re-growth application on grey hair and colour balancing
  • Colouring virgin hair
  • Full head bleach application
  • Toning
  • Highlighting techniques including foil, paper, cap, freehand
  • Sectioning, formulation, mixing, timing
  • All other chemical processes including perming and straightening hair

Technical Skills – Styling

  • Understanding hair types to attain the best results
  • Cutting and advanced cutting
  • Razor cutting and free style techniques
  • Blow drying
  • Finished looks and up dos
  • Avant-garde looks
  • Full knowledge of products for salon and retail use
  • ·

For any of us to improve, like that stylist who sent in the review, we have to know honestly where are, where our strengths and weakness lie and then build on this knowledge.

Leadership

Our industry is in constant change but is sometimes criticised for lacking vision in some areas. However, there is an ever growing body of professionals that has a firm commitment to our industry, that have a passion for change to raise standards through education and sharing.

Leadership, education, and team incentives will over time and with commitment give any individual that ability to do exceptional work and to create an amazing work environment for all concerned.

Just like having certain skills or specialising in any given field be it Colouring. Cutting. Up/do wedding and event hair. Training is a skill to be learned. Maybe many of us should decide what we really want! Maybe owning and managing your salon should be enough for you if so make it the best it can be surround your self with the right people. 
Never forget that our business is built on what I call

The ‘Three R’s’ 
”Reputation. Recommendation. Retention”. 
It’s not built on that constant looking for new clients it’s looking after what you have! It’s investing in your self and your business and those around you.

Conclusion

This journey, this career, is wonderful – challenging, inspiring, and yes, hard work.

Owning a hair salon The challenges!

Your having a great start to your day! Then two stylists come in ask for a word!

They give you their notice they are setting up a business across town! 

You own a busy and successful salon you employ a number of good talented creative staff. You provide trainees and assistants to work and support you team. You feel that you are fair to your staff and business is good, everything is going along smoothly. Clients are loyal so retention is good.

The salon seems to have a reputation for both service and standards of work.

Then one morning everything changes! Your two busiest stylists come in and tell you that they are leaving to open a salon on their own. They offer you two weeks notice tell you it’s nothing personal but they both feel they need a new challenge and that they feel that they have done and experienced about as much as possible in this present arrangement!

Off the bat you are shocked. You are devastated quite rightly. But how do you now cope with this?

Anger fear resentment panic! Followed by how will the salon cope what about their clients! Thoughts like why did they not come to me. I don’t deserve this why me!

Has this ever happened to you? If not chances are it will. If it has then I’m touching a cord I’m sure.

Why do I choose this as a subject because it’s one not touched on best left alone.

The fact is it’s natural progression it will happen have I done it to owner /business partners yes! Has it happened to me? Yes it has! I write to share experience and open discussion.

 At the time of me leaving a business I was involved in I feel I was fully justified in getting out. I was a minority and the two guys I was in business were taking advantage of my work ethic and looking after their best interest .So I did the same. Looked after No 1.

Having been let down myself was harder and I did not see it coming. On reflection I should have I allowed business and pleasure or employment and social life to mix too much.  The out come was being let down and left in a very difficult situation.

On reflection and from experience these situations are like any break up stressful and best way to deal with it is to attribute blame. What we really need to do is look at the big picture. The build up of said events. The circumstances running up to this situation we find our selves in.

When we do this and only when we do this. Can we really understand what has transpired culminating in this business disaster, how we handle is really the key to moving on and having closure.

After the initial shock how would you handle it? What would you do? Damage control? Ask said stylist to leave immediately employment terminated? Get the receptionist on the phone to all there clients. Call emergency staff meeting to rally the troops a lecture on loyalty to follow!

 Sound familiar? I advise take the high ground. Take your time to think it through. Some times inaction is much better than rash decisions and choices made in the heat of the moment. The leaving stylist will expect you to ask them to leave. They will already have full client contact information. In most case the key clients are all ready aware of this .In some case they might be caking it and or supporting it.  I’m not saying suck it up I am suggesting it’s how you deal with it and how you move forward that will define both you and your business.

Believe it or not this could be a huge opportunity to learn and grow and develop a whole new way forward for you your team and future employment.

So take a deep breath stay focused think the process through with an honest open mind. Reflect on your role and contribution to this for we all paly a part we all contribute to the circumstances leading up to this. Are you big enough?

I could write my thoughts on a resolution or out come but that’s; different for us all. I would love to hear some feed back on this.

Points to think about and understand.

Stylists making these choices, it’s not personal.

In building and developing a team create opportunity and incentives.

Do not play the blame game be professional when dealing with these situations.

Keep lines of communication open.

Learn and grow from the experience.

Focus on vision and goal for moving forward.

Do not create ill feeling about those stylists starting new venture. Wish them well

Keep all doors open.

[you may well gain more respect from clients who may come back] you will always be respected for being and staying professional.

Stylist specialist or hairdresser?

Specialisation:

Lets assume you have finished your training and are now fully qualified depending on where in the world you live some form of testing examination will have taken place to prove a level of skill and qualification. whats next?

Here in the Uk that would be either having done an apprenticeship with day release to college. Or may be you went to College then worked in a salon to gain work experience. finally maybe you paid and went to private academy.

What ever your chosen career path you should in the Uk walk away with a NVQ qualification level, 2 or 3.  This basically means you have reached a standard of ability to satisfy the examination board. You have the skills but do you have the salon experience? If not then get some hours under your belt Salon day to day experience is essential to your future success in the hair industry. 

Here is the reality. Your hairdressing career is now about to start put everything you have learned to one side and open your mind to the real world of commercial hairdressing if you want to make a living and be successful. Be prepared to offer assistance in the salon to any one and every one watch listen learn. Become a team member make your self invaluable to the salon and your work mates.

That it’s not for everyone….If you have the talent, don’t give it up because there is no other job out there remotely close to this industry. Stay on top of Education! there is always fresh new people coming into the industry to keep up with 🙂 be dependable, listen well and never be afraid to ask questions. Use this time to hone your people skills. your communication skills, Consultation skills, the art of service. applying your talent to the clients your will be working with and serving them.

Over time as a junior stylist you will start to do clients and hopefully build up a following a loyal clientele one that request your services and recommends you to others.

This is how you establish your self in the salon it’s up to you. No one else is responsible for your success. Non  one else is responsible if you fail! The hairdressing world is very competitive so be prepared for some knocks some good days some stressful days.

Once established what next? Think about your clientele the type of people they attract. Maybe you get a lot of recommendation because you are good with curly hair [maybe you have curly hair so you understand it] maybe you are getting recommendation for your colouring or highlighting skills.

Every one has one aspect that they excel at, either because you really enjoy it or just get it.What ever that thing is capitalise on it. specialise be the one that people ask for because you are knowledgeable and passionate about it ,The skill you have the service you offer!

Whilst having lunch taking about past shows we had done together member’s of staff what they are now doing.We got onto to the topic of specialisation and the key to building and staying busy. That is finding that thing that defines you. Even if your an all rounder one thing will stand out.

For me although most of what i write a great deal of my knowledge is on hair colouring both application and technical knowledge.This is what i like to educate and share with others, if I am  really honest my skill and passion is free style razor cutting. understanding how to create shape and form without cutting straight lines allowing hair to move and fall the way it grows and flows.

Once you have polished up those skill started building up your client base.Take time to think about the clientele your are building the clients your are attracting you will find a common skill that binds these clients to you.What is that skill what is it that you do that attracts your clients. work it out and use it capitalise on it.

Decide that you are going to Specialise in this  chosen skill and service within your salon. Maybe it’s putting hair up. Do some extra course invest in your self.

Some stylist hate putting hair up so if it’s your skill you can gain from it whilst offering a service and helping out a work mate.

As this chosen skill grows and the word gets out you will attract more and more. keep updating all your skills but always go that bit extra to stay on top of what it is that defines you.

The more in demand you become the more specialised you become the more valuable you become the rewards for this will naturally follow. cool ha .

As a specialist in your field doors can open for you. Maybe education others or working for a product company. Maybe photographic work or competitions.

What ever door opens consider you options and choices before making a decision.Once a decision is made you have to go with it live with the consequences. Don’t always just be driven by money the quick reward!! just let that naturally follow as it will.

Creativity. Passion . Drive . Motivation these are the things to focus on. never get to big for your boots  never let EGO take charge remember who you are! Where you started out share and give back to others as success comes. Never ask anyone to do something you are not prepared to do yourself be it shampooing  floor sweeping or stay ing late

I decided today to share some views posted by other fellow professionals on our industry and what they would share with any one who is thinking about or training to be a stylist.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the positive energy commitment and passion of these comment. I hope they will inspire others to share and those coming into the industry to embrace it.

For it’s an adventure a journey with challenges and choices but one well worth taking.

Here is the Question:

Question: If you had an opportunity to talk with young training stylists what would you share with them about our industry and profession. What advise would you give?

Here is some of the advise 

Education , don’t be afraid to ask questions. Work together with other stylists to share knowledge within the salons you work in. Go the extra mile to let your customers know how much you care about them and appreciate their business. Don’t be afraid to give your time for free to create business. When I moved to Vancouver and was just starting out , I gave haircuts to strangers for 5 dollars, just got them in the door. I also put up a poster and the Nursing college to offer discounts to the students. It is better to be working for free than not at all because you are building experience and repeat business that will take care of your future.

Take your ego out of the profession, it never does anyone any good. My parents were both hairstylists and excellent at what they did. My father always told me to shy away from the Posers, and the Primadonas. I think that was good advice.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your clients. The more you get to know them the better you can understand how they like to look. A really good question on first meeting is, Do you like to make a quiet entrance in a room full of people or do you like to stand out right away?
Most importantly ,if you don’t like what you do , it will be very difficult to do well at it. Hairdressing is something you have to love!!

I would tell them  ENJOY THE RIDE!!! It is a big, Fun, exciting, challenging career, filled with endless opportunities for personal and professional growth!

That it’s not for everyone….If you have the talent, don’t give it up because there is no other job out there remotely close to this industry. Stay on top of Education! there is always fresh new people coming into the industry to keep up with 🙂 be dependable, listen well and never be afraid to ask questions. If you put your ALL into your work and keep patience and persistence, it will pay off in the long run. Never sell yourself short, there is too much opportunity out there :))!!

I would say dont be afraid to make mistakes – make as many as possible while your are training , Ask ,ask and ask again all the dumb question you think you have and watch -shadow a senior- question why on everything . Put yourself out there confidence comes from doing and dont beat yourself up too much, enjoy and have fun with it .

The hair salon challenges facing stylist’s owner’s

What are the greatest challenges to stylist and salon owners and managers? Building up and retaining clients. Attracting new business. Being competitive with other local salons? Having that trusting relationship built on. Skill, honesty, creative talent with our clients and staff. ! Oh! And service.

As stylists we can so easily get caught up in being busy staying busy slightly over booking that we forget what is really important. The client. The service. The consultation. The after care advice and so  product sales advise.

Over the years I have come to realize that all of the above points are key to success. They are also the main things we as stylist’s forget, take for granted. These are the things we need to stay on top of, make part of our daily routine when working with our clients.

Salon owners and managers need to consider the location when setting up a new business. The image. What are your goals? How do you become part of the community you hope to serve?

Below the salon well situated in between the two salons that opened recently but this one closed down as the two new one’s opened who has it right i wonder ?

I have recently watched two new salons open in the city where I live. They are a few streets apart for this to happen two salons closed. Is the progress or poor planning time will tell. A topic for another day. But worth a mention both these new salons have come into town expanding from smaller towns. Both have the same idea both looking for a piece of the pie! Hum!!! Battle of the newbies. Who will stand the test of time.Who will the paying public endorse in the hard economic times? Both have invested in a fancy up market look both very different. I did try and see if i could have an appointment to talk with one owner about vision concept goals. No response was forth coming ! fear is normally what holds owners back from talking openly.What do they have to fear ?

Above: Second shop newly opened the challenge is on. Can it, will it. Attract enough new clients will the local community embrace another salon in the city? it markets it’s self as 5star hotel treatment that might put some off! just a thought. Image and what we present to the public is so key.

Challenging our selves to make changes into how we work. Questioning what we do. How we interact with our clients is not as an easy thing. To take a long hard look in the mirror and being honest about what needs maybe a little help some adjustment. Is even a harder thing to do. Admitting we need some external help advise guidance. Even harder

The things we do define us. It’s these things that motivate, and inspire us. Question who you are, what you do, what really empowers you. The challenge is to ensure you have the right knowledge and tools to feel empowered. That feeling of positive affirmation will help you take charge and live your dream.

Courses be they. Technical. Hands on. Shows or demonstrations, are all very worth while.

However the real motivator is being creatively challenged, getting excited, having fun at work and in your life.

The real key to this is. The service we offer. Our communication and consultation skills. Honesty when giving advise on after care and sales.

Its this book that raises the questions, offers the answers, Karen has a finger on the pulse of our industry. It happens that with all my years of experience all that this industry has challenged me with given me, showed me, all this has proved that service, consultation, skill and communication are the key tools we all need to have.

Being able to put one’s Ego aside and having the right level of humility we can all challenge our selves constantly striving to grow and help others to attain higher levels.
