The hair salon the industry what do they mean to you?

                What is a hair dressing salon?:

Is it just a place to do business? Is it a hub a hive of activity? A place where like minded talented stylist get together to share there talents to gain and share experience. A place to train and be trained! A place to work your craft build a reputation be a success. It is so much more consider for a client. It’s a place of relaxation. A place to socialise palace to trust, in many cases as stylist we can and do build strong bonds of trust even friendships with our clients.
For a salon to succeed be a successful Business so many factors have to come together.

Many things to consider Location a key component. Image the very essence of the business. Goals. Vision. Staff. Products. Marketing. Innovative thinking collaboration. All of theses are key component’s for success is any one more important than another:

A point for discussion what do you think? For me it’s the team. Management and all the staff.

The Team:                    

Here is an example on the above. Who owns the salon? Who are Staff hard to tell. they all look equal they are a real team.I’m sure they have structure and mutual respect. But it’s not a dictatorship it’s not a salon class system.

I have been writing quite a few of these Blogs mainly for me a way to share and reflect, I do it seems come back to the same key themes.

Education. Knowledge. Honesty and Service. creative thinking open discussion. Personal development openness to learn. To embrace criticism and valuable feed work,collaborate be a team player . We should never stop learning or wanting too! Never think we know it all! { us hairdressers have big ego’s and it can get in the way}  Success and learning and service if you don’t like people don’t like communicating why be a hairdresser! Being honest with your self about who you are being honest with your clients really important if you want to succeed.

I read a recent article

Having worked for a number of years as both an educator and platform Artist I know how much fun it can be. The rush of walking out on a stage introducing yourself your models you have and own the stage your centre of attention.

Being an educator and platform artist can help you promote both your self and your business. This should be the reason for doing it! Yes to further your career to gain knowledge to share but don’t get sucked into thinking your really that special. Dangerous it’s not fame it’s fore filling that inner need to a platform to show off the most important things is to learn and share help develop the salon your teammates. Encourage personal development of all skills both hands on technical but also personal growth.

The big Colour Companies need us to sell promote educate their products. At the end of the the day your Salon should be your priority why? It’s yours to build to grow without the constrains dictated to you when representing a large corporate concern. Use the education experience you gain to share with your staff use your skills knowledge on your clients use the fact that you are an industry expert to your advantage. support your juniors your trainees.

Another interesting topic stylist with poor client retention key to business a stylist who is unable to build a client base is questionable. A stylist who gets no returns or recommendations from clients the salon gives them is costing the business money.

This is time for open honest discussion with owner manager staff member: Time for honesty and truth ask the key question why do you think we are in this situation. make them take responsibility set out a plan together to improve set out a time frame for change set a date for review.
Communication is key having said that the individual has to take responsibility for their actions or lack their of, suggest in salon training nights a time to share thoughts idea’s courses education, maybe a course in service handling clients, a little attitude adjustment. Finally as an owner i would set a dead line for giving them clients, suggesting that after an agreed period a new stylist is being brought in and it will be their turn to be promoted. Harsh maybe but it’s but it’s how to move your business forward.

Educate your self and your staff on the products you use then you can  share and educate your clients.

Colour used was for deposit only when going tone on tone unless we want to bring the clients own pigment out lift is not required.

Using say 10 vol may have made this even brighter but would create roots issues down the road. This up do was created to get as much height as possible without it falling down or over. In this instance two scouring pads were used like doughnuts on top of each other some hair pulled through the hole in the middle this creates the cascading hair from the top the rest is wrapped around allowing free fall providing texture and movement. Finally from the front view a very loose sexy look  with lots of height but still keeping lots of softness

As the hair falls down. Putting hair up in this manner with a firm base as a structure will not fall down.

Hair colour or dye the consultation

The Consultation your time to shine:

I’ve been a fully trained stylist involved in our industry for well over 30 years have been fortunate enough to have experienced many aspects of the hairdressing Industry. In my many years of working with clients, I like to think that nothing shocks or surprises me many clients have shared every issue that may arise and come to us at our chair and station chair.

I’ve seen young women come in with orange roots and white ends. I’ve seen red roots and black ends.  I’ve seen hair looking like a traffic light from violet to blue, colors that usually are reserved for flowers.When I see these mistakes colour failures in some case hair nightmares one cannot help but feel oh so sorry for the client to which these hair are attached.

Normally when the color mistakes are so apparent the truth is impossible to ignore the poor client is so embarrassed upset and apologetic that one  really wants to help and fix this problem if at all possible. The client usually admits that it was a money issue a crazy moment or a few drinks with that got out of hand with a friend it seemed like a good idea at the time! found an old box under the vanity and thought it would be a great time at 3 in the morning to “streak” their hair. I don’t have any issues helping these clients for me the challenge is correcting it the reward is success a happy client she made an honest mistake at home and now seeks professional help a humbling experience in it’s self.

Usually they have learned from the mistake  after all we all make mistakes first time one feels sorry for them repeat offenders well they are on their own, most however are more than willing to go through the steps to fix the situation. Then there are the liars. I know this is harsh, but usually when you ask someone a direct question and they knowingly misinform you, that’s a lie. As a stylist how can we make an informed decision to fix something when blatantly given the wrong information. In most cases they have been deceived by marketing adverts and promotion that suggest an easy to use instant make over in a box trouble is these kits cannot cover and address every hair situation or scenario it can be complicated! from a stylist point of view we need to know the truth in order to perform the right service.

Here is an example of a normal client consultation:

 A client is looking for some sort of chemical service, not always a major change; let’s say going lighter.  We will take a close look at the hair during the consultation and figure out what we need to do to get as close to the desired result without damaging the hair.  It is at this time when we’ll ask the client their past history.  whilst at the same time looking and feeling for indications of damage, If we see any sort of banding, we know some sort chemical affected the hair.  It’s a pretty simple fact, hair grows approximately 1/2 inch a month.  If there is a any sort of line of demarcation, we know there was something “done” to the hair,  and we can tell when it happened by how far it is away from the scalp.  When we ask the client why this band exists, they can’t give a reason.  When we’d tell them that something had to be put in their hair to create this band they will not admit to anything.  To be fair with so many over the counter products these days misleading the consumer it is possible that they were unaware the product used would cause this issue.  In some cases one would repeatedly ask the question and they’ll repeatedly plead their innocence/ignorance. stale mate helps no one!

Here’s some information everyone needs to know.

Anything from a box color to a highlighting shampoo that causes any visible difference in your hair color has permanently altered the hair structure. Sun-In or anything like that, especially highlighting shampoos and conditioners have any variety of alkaline chemicals that diffuse your natural pigment. Beware of these products since they may contain sodium hydroxide which is relaxer. Any color from a box that is made from 2 or more components that are mixed together have some sort of peroxide component. Peroxide oxidizes your natural pigment, so if there is any alkaline in the formula, you will get lift. Many box colors say that they last 24 shampoos simply put if your color is changed by a box and if you grow out roots, it is not temporary the hair structure has been permanently affected. When hair is colored or receives any chemical service it is permanently affected till it is is cut off.

You may have correction to re colour blonde hair with brown pigment, it may be a perfect colour match  but the hair still has any inherent damage caused by the initial service in this case going blonde. As a client try and be as open as possible the more history the better  their is no advantage in trying to hide any chemical service that you have introduced into their hair.   there is no reason to hide any details no  matter what the box says informed decisions are easier to make with all the information at  hand and every thing must be taken into consideration.  When we ask you questions about what has happened to your hair for the past year or so, we need to know everything so we can make the right decisions for your services.

Next time you come in to get any chemical service done be completely honest with your colorist or  as a stylist you are doing a consultation make sure you ask all the right question.We can read the history of your hair and there is no need for deception.  After all, we have your best interests in mind.  As it’s said ‘The truth will set you free’. A lie may break your hair!

TYPES OF HAIR COLOR

Permanent Color:

Permanent color gives you 100% complete coverage. Most permanent color uses peroxide (10 to 40 vol.) and ammonia. The downside is regrowth of new hair – it is a different shade and will leave a line of “demarcation”, or regrowth. Most permanent hair colour uses 10 to 20 volume peroxide 40 vol would only be used for high lift blonde formulations, In most cases 40 vol is not recommended for scalp application. this type of application requires colour balancing unless first application.

Not all colour is driven by Ammonia many options available.

Semi-Permanent Color:

Color usually contains some ammonia and uses a developer of 10 to 20 vol. Although it normally contains something to slightly open the Cuticle it does not have Ammonia nor does it have Peroxide much less 10 to 20 vol.

Demi-Permanent Color:

Uses peroxide in low vols. (under 10 vol.). Many have no ammonia and leave little damage. When the color fades, it does gradually so it leaves no line of demarcation. Normally uses around 5vol for the oxidation of the colour molecule may have low amount of ammonia or some other substance to open the cuticle fro slightly deeper deposit. long term use of this formulation will result in build up and possible re growth line slow fading, ideal for Grey coverage with out going permanent

Semi-Temporary Color:

These will last a short time (1-4 weeks). The usually incur no damage to the hair. You can expect about 40-60% gray coverage. A direct dye/stain lies on the surface of the hair very little deposit so fades as washed whilst will blend Grey hair  some types more than others will not give full deposit will build up over time, they s  sometimes have an alkaline in them to enable a little deposit.

Temporary/ Color Rinse:

Color lasts from one shampoo to the next and is deposited on the outside of the hair shaft. As with a Semi permanent these can and do vary in their chemistry and how long they last depend on amount of washing and porosity of the hair, they can cause staining issues

Hair salon influences and change

The hair Industry is multi dynamic in it’s many branches that come together under the heading.

‘Hair industry’

From: The salon to manufacturing from manufacturing to education skill training, personal development. Career path and challenges.

Educator, artistic team member, platform artist, salon owner, manager, freelance/chair or booth renter. distributor or sales representative.

Change happens it’s constant from the products that are available to us. This new must have technology  we have to have. However we also need to question how and why they work understand any side effects Are they safe ! We must be educated on these products feel confident they are safe for us and our clients.

What dives the invention and investment into research of new product technology? Is it sales and profit yes of course. First and foremost it’s driven by Media demand from promotion and advertising. Now with the internet with the tablet with the android more than ever, clients can see it see instantly the results see the look they are hooked they want it!

Of course it’s our job to deliver but it’s also our professional duty to be the moral compass. We have to have the knowledge and the skill to inform advise and educate our clients on the products it’s pro’s and con’s for there will always be both!

Influences.

This economy this global shift has been a wake up call to any one in business and we in the hair industry are not and have not been immune to this. The seasonal spikes that we could rely on no longer exist that Christmas rush that spring make over that pre holiday do!

Staying in touch with discussion groups and forums shows me that many salons are struggling, many are looking for a way to turn things around. Many are relying to discounting, some are taking short cuts maybe compromising on product quality. Just treading water trying to survive.

We all need to take a deep breath evaluate where we are what we want. Re visits those goals that vision and re focus. We have to embrace new technology. We have to collaborate more with staff or team members. Learn to use the power of the media social net works collaborate with staff to promote the salon it’s services in a positive way.

Be strong enough to seek out professional help and advise. Maybe we need to think of this shift as a new beginning, a time for reinvention, a time to revaluate and start with over with a new rekindled energy and out look, Change and indeed challenges can and do seem so daunting because it forces us to look at things in different light encourages us to think out the the box.

We can all make difference in so many ways. Start with that vision build your team have an ongoing in house training program. Develop your team have apprentices train then share your skills investing them they are the future become the teachers develop your an their future, use the colleges for the theory for you trainees to get certified work with the colleges and collaborate on training for they certainly don’t have all the answers they need also to adapt to the industry changes and salon demands.

Work to develop these young enthusiastic creative stylists grow with them, grow develop and learn together.

Products source what works for you both for salon use and retail don’t carry to much stock. Address the skills and passions of each and every salon member, encourage courses and extra training both in salon and external. work with your manufacturer and supplier on education up date and in houses training events. . The salon as a whole has to have the highest standards of training and expertise, individually encourage  specialisation become unique a destination location a place of excellence in even field. The palace that is talked about a place that people want to be associated with. Community involvement, be it linked to the gym healthy centre or supporting local events collaboration innovative thinking.

How do we get beyond thinking of ‘clients as one time walk in’s’ and consider them as long term potentials?

When will we start to consider all those clients who ‘come once never to return’ ! Those lost opportunities to make a first and last impression. When will we take the time to think. ‘In fixing someone else’s mistakes’ will it could it cost me potential ‘Clients’. Part of this new thinking is. ‘We are in the service industry’. ‘We are not in the server industry’. Professional boundaries and mutual respect must exist. The client is not always right neither are we balance and being open to change and the unexpected and dealing with and addressing issues solving problems.

That first impression the personal image we present. How we communicate and articulate our suggestions the art of listening. Being a professional in your field of expertise thus giving sound advise. Executing and delivering the service advise in highly skilled professional way with the highest expertise and skill offering a wonderful experience. Charging for your time and expertise. No discounting. No little bit off at the cash register. Being paid for a job well done. This is what a client expects and wants nothing more nothing less. Discounting could suggest that ‘you did not do your job as well as you could have’. ‘It will be better next time’. ‘Thank you for letting me try’. ‘Sorry i could have tried harder’. Do any of these a good message? a message of professional confidence and assertiveness.

Yes things have changed they will continue to change to challenge us so we have to learn to embrace adapt and be ready so that we can keep up with the every changing demands and wants that our industry dictates as it grows and developed. We all have the strength to do this .We can also connect with other professional share experience seek advise offer advise competition is not always a good thing  it can become so distractive and negative both within the salon and  if competing with business around you. Discounting is competition sadly it’s not he who gives the biggest discount who wins.

We all have new technology new products new tools. Constantly changing techniques and demands to sill levels. We have an industry in a state of flux. We have change and challenges to face. We have social media devices and we all have to embrace all the changes and the challenges they pose. Exciting times is the only way to look at it.

What is personal development do you give it any thought? Do you take any time to plan your career once qualified? Have you ever considered the many options available to you in the hair industry and thought about how best to improve your skills and knowledge?

Work on thinking about a plan of action for your career making some clear choices and taking action. Maybe this is not you and our happy just working as a creative stylist in a salon. Experience over the years has shown me that eventually this is not enough for most stylist they want more responsibility they want more control.To get this you have to have a plan a vision and some goals. What are yours? Are you ready to trust yourself take control of your future?

Investing in one self and ones future:

To succeed in at any level in Cosmetology demands quality.professional skill. Creativity talent and technical knowledge and ability. In the Hairdressing profession many individuals have great artistic skills.But they fail or let them sleeves down by not having or acquiring the technical knowledge to make those skills truly great. 

Would you like to gain more experience in other aspects of the hairdressing industry. Are your ready to challenge your self? Maybe your goal is to own your own salon. Have a freelance business. Maybe become an educator for an international hair colour company. A platform artist.Artistic team member. College tutor.Climb the ladder to salon management. All very worth while. Deciding on what path to take,where your true vocation lies is not easy so should not be rushed. Reaping the rewards from hard work and commitment is very satisfying but is it enough? Constantly pushing your self striving to be the very best you can is very challenging but so very worth while could this be you?

The Hurdles and obstacles can seem immense one has to stay committed and focused embrace the challenges. Be prepared to face rejection over come obstacles deal with the emotional challenges of an unchartered journey and adventure stick with it however daunting however demanding it is. Sounds like a great deal of hard work. It is but nothing is easy and it would not be a challenge or so rewarding at the end if it were handed on plate!

The big thing the key is you don’t have to do it alone unaided there are many in this industry here to help and advise you you only have to search them out connect and ask for advise for help and you will get it. With so many talented, focused, driven, motivated stylists and industry professionals help is always available. As an industry professional how can you create that edge how can you keep it? Become a specialist in your field the one people turn to for advise and guidance become a business success. What ever your choice be it.

To be a top stylist. Own your own business. Be platform artist.There are no short cuts but having a clear vision and an understanding of how things work.What path to take this can really help you over the hurdles and obstacles you may face while making this vision a reality.

Apart from having the right up to date qualifications .You must have a full and extensive record of your journey your training your education your soil level qualification and certification. Show a history of having attended education updates, prove creativity, demonstrate skills in service and consultation. Have an interest in business management staff management and training. Show a willingness to learn and commitment earn trust show loyalty gain respect.

Websters defines the word skill as ‘ The ability to use one;s skills effectively’ Todays hairdressers must have a strong working knowledge of the hair, chemistry, the hair structure, the products available, trusting manufactures is no longer enough or safe! know this before you can effectively show your artistic and creative skills through colouring and handling chemicals and products. Again there are no short cuts to knowledge the more you understand who hair colour works and reacts on human hair the better prepared you will be to face the challenges that can and do arise.

What does investing in one self man? Is it costly? Is it worth while? let me tell you,Investing in oneself does not have to be financial- It can and could be a simple as time well spent! We must all look in the mirror and be honest about what needs  attention what needs some adjustment. The real key is knowing from the bottom of your heart.What you truly want where you want your career to go what lengths your are prepared to go to to make. Your dream. your vision. Your quest a reality.

Sadly this does not mean that financial expense is not apart of this, sometimes parting with hard earned cash is the driver and motivator. Seek help. Do the work. Reap the rewards. Self investment. How many people sign up for gym membership to get healthy drop a few pounds ? They go a few time then always find an excuse not to go eventually  the membership runs out or gets cancelled the Gym gets blamed oh it was costly it did not work for me!! when you pay the membership you still have to do the work someone else is not going to ride that bike and get fit or lose weight for you! Same deal with investing in education skill training knowledge you have to commit to the work the program.

Help can and does come in many forms It could be useful books or downloads. Seminars. Courses. Presentations. Demonstrations. Webinar. Video links. what works best for you how do you learn what keeps you motivated stimulated your choice. The key is to have that vision of what you want where you want your career to go.  Research  your choices!

Think of your career as a bus journey.There are lots of people on the bus with you,some getting on and off others staying on for the ride.But hey your the driver take your eyes off the road and pops! your in control drive your career take your path.We are all in charge of our own destiny we have to make choices and live with the consequences challenging our selves and those around us for we are all linked through our industry our passion our commitment to development and change.

Professional Hair colour dye the N series.

Professional hair colour or hair dye! what role does the N series have in colour choice and formulation? It is the opinion of Some hair colourist and or technicians that “rules are made for breaking”  Hum! Ego! is alive and well. For me and many real professionalthat is not the case I say ” understand and trust the colour wheel”  it works !  

When you think about hair colour. What goes through our head ? Do you pull out that shade chart? do you use it correctly? Do you trust it? Do you do your own thing? Do you blame the product when colour goes wrong? Do you use it to refer to or in some cases do you just drop it in a clients lap and say! What colour do you want today!!! [ you may be smiling it happens] more often than you might think!

How often do you consider what you want from that colour that tube of pigment. how it works how what you chose decides the out come the formulation you mix!

The N series is designed for what? To give you a natural looking base shade and cover Grey hair. It can be applied to go darker or lighter given the formulation you choose and considering the working environment and your end goal. it’s main job is to deliver natural pigment and control the pigment exposed at the level you are working in.In other words be calibrated to deal with unwanted pigment and warmth.

My question today is?

Do you consider what the process is? What your asking of any given shade? Lets take 8N for example a nice natural looking level of Blonde. what pigmentation would you expect and need from this miracle tube when working within a level 8 with 8N natural permanent tint/colour/dye Why do I ask this? Because it’s key.The same can be said for any given natural level and choice of N series. So back to question pigmentation. Do you understand it?

The pigmentation of any N series should be enough pigment to control the hairs natural pigment at any given natural level.! Hum what does this mean? Well lets think about our level 8 natural level.

If we mix a very basic formulation lets say 30grams[1oz] 8N 45grams 20vol peroxide 11/2oz]  what will happen? what do we, should we expect to happen?

The 20 volume peroxide will start to lift the hair through level 8 and into level 9 easy 20 vol 2 level lift by doing this we are exposing bring out the natural pigment in the hair so in this instance yellow with a hint of orange [if unsure look at the shade chart and colour wheel]

Having exposed this pigment through our choice of Peroxide. We now have to know [hope is not good enough] that our N series has enough pigment to deal with the issue you have created. So what do you need? Our Natural series must have a pigmentation of Blue Violet to control the pigment exposed and keep our colour natural. You have to control that yellow orange and restore balance.

A great deal to expect from a little tube of colour the same can be said for any natural level. You have to consider what we want from our colour but more importantly consider the formulation and what to expect from it. Of course if previously coloured hair and a root application we would have to colour balance the mid lengths and ends this would not be done with the N series or with peroxide. A Demi application and choice of matching shade will refresh previously coloured hair deposit only.

The key is to take the time to think lift deposit that is what am i going to expose, how do i control it! It’s balance it’s harmony between blue yellow and red at any given level!

The same can be applied to all shades Gold, Copper, Reds. Our choice of peroxide on any given natural level dictates. Whether our colour will be really bright or controlled. Why because we are adding pigment to the colour as soon as we lift the hair’s natural level! So please consider. It’s not just a tube that works wonders ! It’s a tube of pigment designed to help you attain you target colour, it’s use it’s application is down to you! when things go wrong consider what formulation you mixed what you expected from your choice . Most colour lines hair dyes that get change din salons are really down to poor technical ability and not the product. Poor formulation assessment and timing.

A poor Colourist / technician or stylist will always blame the colour .The reality is it’s not the colour! Take a look in the mirror yes that’s the problem !! Education skill knowledge .Think about what your wanting from that colour. Understand it. Read the technical book in your shade chart! yes the black stuff ! It’s called colour chart and manual for a reason.

The same applies to want wanting bright vibrant colours to enhance your choice on the shade chart. Think about the natural level and what pigment you can expose to enhance it. Also what pigment base will control the pigment you will expose! back to the colour wheel! remember opposite neutralise! have fun. Be professional. Be responsible produce the very best colour and create the very best look you can. Challenge your self and those around you raise standards.

Herbal and organic colours and dyes.

It would not be fair of me to not mention that the same rules apply when using organic and herbal hair colour s and dyes. When they are Ammonia free the processes is still the same. The alkaline has been replaced by something normally sourced from wheat so a gain alcohol derivative becomes the driver in place of the ammonia in most cases the results as the same. The role the  N series plays in these colour lines would be the same. refinement of colour and addressing Grey issues.

challenges and change in the hair industry .

              Is there need for change in our industry? 

                                  ‘If so’

                How can this change happen?

Sadly although it can happen by itself when this happens it’s not normally good and positive change. It’s a change that happens slowly over time normally caused by neglect and complacency.

Rather than point out areas that need to change or be addressed i think it better to look at the big picture and how positive on going change can and will impact our industry. Not every one is open to change some might even be dead against it but it happens with or without some guidance and direction when this happens it can become quiet chaotic and seem very random and uncoordinated.

The hair industry has so many facets that it becomes quite hard to think about it as a whole I think of it more as many smaller units that are all linked under one umbrella ‘our industry’.

From Salon ownership.To Distributor.To Manufacturing. These might be considered the three main arms with other avenues leading off and yet connected within the industry.

This might be Stylists. Training education. Product knowledge. Product education. Platform work Product promotion. This would then break down again into others area. Colleges.Academy. Salon training. Product educator Sales person. Artistic team member and so on. Many avenues to many to split them up.

What has changed over the years? Certainly government involvement in standards and levels of training by the setting up of training standard bodies creating over legislation has this been for the better good of the industry? For both the standards and indeed for the types attracted into the profession? Are the right people steering controlling and setting mandates for our industry?

The number of colleges and academy’s. The standards they teach  the number of students they produce qualified each year. Is it now just a business and  way to control unemployment numbers? Should they work more closely with the industry at grass roots levels the salon and business owner the end consumer of the trainee’s.The industry expected to employ these constantly growing number of newly qualified professionals.

Manufacturers the products they produce, they way they market them. Do they respect our industry or dictate to it? Should they be more transparent about the products they expect us to use and promote. The salon business. Is on longer seasonal. The demands from stylist are different. The way we can connect with our clients is different. what clients demand is constantly changing. The age of expected discounting is consuming many salon and spa owners.

I do not have al the answers to the points raised but i do know that over the years we have allowed these changes to influence our industry. These changes some good some not so good now effect and influence our profession greatly. Judging by the number of industry professional voicing opinion globally on various professional group forums the need and want for change is growing. Build up a Linkedin professional profile join a some groups become active.One such group ‘professional hairdresser knowledge networking group’

There are many passionate motivated professional who work tirelessly to try and raise awareness and have a voice. Every salon every spa has the power to make change happen. How. By starting in your own salon with staff and owner collaboration with innovative thinking. By taking action start to think about and discuss the things your ant to change have a vision and work towards it salon owners stop competing with each other by our discounting each other you are hurting your selves some time competition is not healthy it’s distractive and negative.

Start in salon training develop your team have high standards start hold the manufactures accountable for the products they expect us to use. Join discussion groups share your voice have opinion.When things are not acceptable say so communicate openly with staff. learn and understand how to use social net working and multi media to your advantage. Encourage personal development as well as salon and team development. Take back control of your business and so a little bit of our industry by being educated skilled and professional. Being informed having knowledge is power having opinion and sharing views is powerful.

Finally the internet and the information available we cannot trust everything that is posted to be totally true we owe it to our sleeves and those we work with or influence to do a great deal of research to make sure the facts that we are presented with are correct. To be willing and open for change and challenges to embrace all the new possibilities available to us.

The internet is a marketing tool as well as an information high way so we have to all learn to navigate it and stay current and up to date!

I hope that this starts up some discussion and gives me some feed back.

This topic is worthy of both discussion thought  and comment for it effects each and every one involved in the Hairdressing Industry.

Having Spent a number of years involved in Sales and education or is it? Education and sales: It’s so hard to know for one supports the other. [ chicken and egg what comes first] One side sales drives the education machine funding allowing technicians and educators into salons to share and demonstrate. On the other hand without the support of good education the sales go flat. Salons. Stylist lose interest, use products incorrectly getting bad results blaming the product! It is my view. That if you really trust and have belief in a product it will sell it self. If your educated a product how and why it works. If you have a passion for it, it’s easy to talk about it sells it self.

Why so much pressure on sales why fear education?

In salons many stylist hate education up dates. They look at educators as know it all’s They attempt to put then down show them up  in some cases resent them Why ?  FEAR!

Most salons change colour lines because of dissatisfaction with the product. If it does not perform well in reality the fault is with the stylist technician. But hey! It’s always easier to blame a product than take an honest look in the mirror! Tuff harsh words but true. I don’t know how many salons I’ve visited that so need education support but the staff the manager will not allow it. I also think that many sales representatives have very little respect for what a good passionate educator can do.product knowledge classes or in house training vents can make such a difference to a salon.

Why because they fear letting any one see that they don’t know everything! who does? The fact is Sales are Sales. Education is just educating. On how to correctly use and get the best out of the product that sharing knowledge giving support to the salon to the sales person to the staff this can only serve to improve. Standards. Skill. Knowledge. Why all the problems? Ego, Insecurity, Fear? or just an un-daunting need for control!  All things that are rife in society but for some reason really run rampant in the Hair beauty industry.

We have salon managers and owners who fear educating there staff to much. We have staff who hate to admit they have an issues or don’t understand. Will not admit that they want or need more education, skill and knowledge. We have professional Colour companies who market them selves with being professional. But flood the market with home colour kits. With little or no care for the effect on the high street salon The stylist trying to make a living build up a clientele not to mention the damage long term use can do from use of home colour.Building  passionate committed team that works together an want education is key to success.

Colour Companies that offer education to some to degree but maybe not fully transparent when it comes to formulation ! Maybe not totally honest about all the chemistry of any given product need to know bases! misleading. We have schools Colleges, Academy’s. All offering a level of training but! How qualified? How up to date are those trainers? How much do they really care? How skilled are they? How current are they? How they look! How professional are they/

We have young people coming into the industry with a false idea of how successful they can be. How much there is to learn. How long it takes to be a success. We have Stylist who reach a level of qualification and then sit back knowing everything knowing nothing? Why is this? so many skills to learn so many tools to understand?

We have all these different governing bodies have you ever tried contacting them to ask for a meeting or some information? good luck with that one. Am I out spoken? Well maybe but it’s done it’s said to create discussion, to open up debate, to see who really cares! Not to be politically correct.We have to raise question sot find answers.

I have over the years worked with  many like minded passionate industry professional and they are all of the mind that things could be better standards raised, knowledge shared. education improved so what can we do how can we make a difference?

How can we encourage an exchange of knowledge and information. disclosing of product information in an open transparent manner.  One with sales teams working with and supporting education. Stylist who constantly want to up-date. Teachers trainers. Who really care how to encourage the young stylist to have higher standards, skill, who pride themselves in levels of Service and consultation. This is possible by net working sharing reaching out. We have so many mediums available to us  this is such a huge multifaceted Industry. It’s exciting vibrant. It’s constantly growing, changing evolving, whilst at the same time standing still.

The Linked in professional hairdressing net working group is established in the hopes of attracting like minded people to join share and debate.
