New look shared vision

A vision shared:

It has always been my goal to use this web site and indeed all the blogs as platform to share thoughts thoughts and views.
My vision has been to create a place for even one to have access to some educational material but also topic’s of interest maybe articles that provoke some thoughts push a few buttons make a difference.

Over the course of doing this and as we launch the new look to the web site and what it has to offer. I have learned much along the way two things have been very valuable to me.
First and foremost connecting with Karen and David Owners of http://www.karendavidintl.com/ they have shared a great deal with me about their goal dreams aspirations a vision for the future in our industry the salon support material they have produced is relevant to all salon owners and stylist in the coming weeks i will be promoting there material and sharing links to it. Although they are based in Australia and New Zealand they have proved that with todays social media tools the internet webinar downloads audio support any thing is possible.The issue we all experience in our industry are very much the same what ever the continent what every the government or over seeing bodies . It’s only professional committed industry professional who can really make a difference and help to make change happen.

I have been given an opportunity here from a Uk base to be an affiliate to promote and sure the material they offer and think that it could make a huge difference to all those struggling to survive or looking for answers to a way forward.

My other huge reward has been LinkedIn having established a profile i started a professional hairdresser net working group it has steadily grown over the past months to having a true international following in excess of 1000 members. the topic’s raised and the comments placed make it very worth while. What i never expected from this was how much i could learn and gain from the honest sharing of others or indeed how if you place the right topic’s and post honest points to questions raise you can and do attract and so connect with so many like mined professionals all wanting to make a difference this has been one of my greatest rewards and certainly i am very humbled by the comments some have made the honesty of some and the ongoing support.
I would post some personal thanks but the professionals who i have really connected with you know who you are and i thank you so much for your support your comments. your professional confidences.

It is my on going mission my vision to carry on developing the web site and the blogs. My hope is to add and develop material that creates discussion evokes thought. I also hope to develop some material for down load some in conjunction with Karen and David. This will be in the coming months but i’m sharing it with you as i’m very excited about the challenge and possibilities

Hair colour or dye the consultation

The Consultation your time to shine:

I’ve been a fully trained stylist involved in our industry for well over 30 years have been fortunate enough to have experienced many aspects of the hairdressing Industry. In my many years of working with clients, I like to think that nothing shocks or surprises me many clients have shared every issue that may arise and come to us at our chair and station chair.

I’ve seen young women come in with orange roots and white ends. I’ve seen red roots and black ends.  I’ve seen hair looking like a traffic light from violet to blue, colors that usually are reserved for flowers.When I see these mistakes colour failures in some case hair nightmares one cannot help but feel oh so sorry for the client to which these hair are attached.

Normally when the color mistakes are so apparent the truth is impossible to ignore the poor client is so embarrassed upset and apologetic that one  really wants to help and fix this problem if at all possible. The client usually admits that it was a money issue a crazy moment or a few drinks with that got out of hand with a friend it seemed like a good idea at the time! found an old box under the vanity and thought it would be a great time at 3 in the morning to “streak” their hair. I don’t have any issues helping these clients for me the challenge is correcting it the reward is success a happy client she made an honest mistake at home and now seeks professional help a humbling experience in it’s self.

Usually they have learned from the mistake  after all we all make mistakes first time one feels sorry for them repeat offenders well they are on their own, most however are more than willing to go through the steps to fix the situation. Then there are the liars. I know this is harsh, but usually when you ask someone a direct question and they knowingly misinform you, that’s a lie. As a stylist how can we make an informed decision to fix something when blatantly given the wrong information. In most cases they have been deceived by marketing adverts and promotion that suggest an easy to use instant make over in a box trouble is these kits cannot cover and address every hair situation or scenario it can be complicated! from a stylist point of view we need to know the truth in order to perform the right service.

Here is an example of a normal client consultation:

 A client is looking for some sort of chemical service, not always a major change; let’s say going lighter.  We will take a close look at the hair during the consultation and figure out what we need to do to get as close to the desired result without damaging the hair.  It is at this time when we’ll ask the client their past history.  whilst at the same time looking and feeling for indications of damage, If we see any sort of banding, we know some sort chemical affected the hair.  It’s a pretty simple fact, hair grows approximately 1/2 inch a month.  If there is a any sort of line of demarcation, we know there was something “done” to the hair,  and we can tell when it happened by how far it is away from the scalp.  When we ask the client why this band exists, they can’t give a reason.  When we’d tell them that something had to be put in their hair to create this band they will not admit to anything.  To be fair with so many over the counter products these days misleading the consumer it is possible that they were unaware the product used would cause this issue.  In some cases one would repeatedly ask the question and they’ll repeatedly plead their innocence/ignorance. stale mate helps no one!

Here’s some information everyone needs to know.

Anything from a box color to a highlighting shampoo that causes any visible difference in your hair color has permanently altered the hair structure. Sun-In or anything like that, especially highlighting shampoos and conditioners have any variety of alkaline chemicals that diffuse your natural pigment. Beware of these products since they may contain sodium hydroxide which is relaxer. Any color from a box that is made from 2 or more components that are mixed together have some sort of peroxide component. Peroxide oxidizes your natural pigment, so if there is any alkaline in the formula, you will get lift. Many box colors say that they last 24 shampoos simply put if your color is changed by a box and if you grow out roots, it is not temporary the hair structure has been permanently affected. When hair is colored or receives any chemical service it is permanently affected till it is is cut off.

You may have correction to re colour blonde hair with brown pigment, it may be a perfect colour match  but the hair still has any inherent damage caused by the initial service in this case going blonde. As a client try and be as open as possible the more history the better  their is no advantage in trying to hide any chemical service that you have introduced into their hair.   there is no reason to hide any details no  matter what the box says informed decisions are easier to make with all the information at  hand and every thing must be taken into consideration.  When we ask you questions about what has happened to your hair for the past year or so, we need to know everything so we can make the right decisions for your services.

Next time you come in to get any chemical service done be completely honest with your colorist or  as a stylist you are doing a consultation make sure you ask all the right question.We can read the history of your hair and there is no need for deception.  After all, we have your best interests in mind.  As it’s said ‘The truth will set you free’. A lie may break your hair!

TYPES OF HAIR COLOR

Permanent Color:

Permanent color gives you 100% complete coverage. Most permanent color uses peroxide (10 to 40 vol.) and ammonia. The downside is regrowth of new hair – it is a different shade and will leave a line of “demarcation”, or regrowth. Most permanent hair colour uses 10 to 20 volume peroxide 40 vol would only be used for high lift blonde formulations, In most cases 40 vol is not recommended for scalp application. this type of application requires colour balancing unless first application.

Not all colour is driven by Ammonia many options available.

Semi-Permanent Color:

Color usually contains some ammonia and uses a developer of 10 to 20 vol. Although it normally contains something to slightly open the Cuticle it does not have Ammonia nor does it have Peroxide much less 10 to 20 vol.

Demi-Permanent Color:

Uses peroxide in low vols. (under 10 vol.). Many have no ammonia and leave little damage. When the color fades, it does gradually so it leaves no line of demarcation. Normally uses around 5vol for the oxidation of the colour molecule may have low amount of ammonia or some other substance to open the cuticle fro slightly deeper deposit. long term use of this formulation will result in build up and possible re growth line slow fading, ideal for Grey coverage with out going permanent

Semi-Temporary Color:

These will last a short time (1-4 weeks). The usually incur no damage to the hair. You can expect about 40-60% gray coverage. A direct dye/stain lies on the surface of the hair very little deposit so fades as washed whilst will blend Grey hair  some types more than others will not give full deposit will build up over time, they s  sometimes have an alkaline in them to enable a little deposit.

Temporary/ Color Rinse:

Color lasts from one shampoo to the next and is deposited on the outside of the hair shaft. As with a Semi permanent these can and do vary in their chemistry and how long they last depend on amount of washing and porosity of the hair, they can cause staining issues

This topic is worthy of both discussion thought  and comment for it effects each and every one involved in the Hairdressing Industry.

Having Spent a number of years involved in Sales and education or is it? Education and sales: It’s so hard to know for one supports the other. [ chicken and egg what comes first] One side sales drives the education machine funding allowing technicians and educators into salons to share and demonstrate. On the other hand without the support of good education the sales go flat. Salons. Stylist lose interest, use products incorrectly getting bad results blaming the product! It is my view. That if you really trust and have belief in a product it will sell it self. If your educated a product how and why it works. If you have a passion for it, it’s easy to talk about it sells it self.

Why so much pressure on sales why fear education?

In salons many stylist hate education up dates. They look at educators as know it all’s They attempt to put then down show them up  in some cases resent them Why ?  FEAR!

Most salons change colour lines because of dissatisfaction with the product. If it does not perform well in reality the fault is with the stylist technician. But hey! It’s always easier to blame a product than take an honest look in the mirror! Tuff harsh words but true. I don’t know how many salons I’ve visited that so need education support but the staff the manager will not allow it. I also think that many sales representatives have very little respect for what a good passionate educator can do.product knowledge classes or in house training vents can make such a difference to a salon.

Why because they fear letting any one see that they don’t know everything! who does? The fact is Sales are Sales. Education is just educating. On how to correctly use and get the best out of the product that sharing knowledge giving support to the salon to the sales person to the staff this can only serve to improve. Standards. Skill. Knowledge. Why all the problems? Ego, Insecurity, Fear? or just an un-daunting need for control!  All things that are rife in society but for some reason really run rampant in the Hair beauty industry.

We have salon managers and owners who fear educating there staff to much. We have staff who hate to admit they have an issues or don’t understand. Will not admit that they want or need more education, skill and knowledge. We have professional Colour companies who market them selves with being professional. But flood the market with home colour kits. With little or no care for the effect on the high street salon The stylist trying to make a living build up a clientele not to mention the damage long term use can do from use of home colour.Building  passionate committed team that works together an want education is key to success.

Colour Companies that offer education to some to degree but maybe not fully transparent when it comes to formulation ! Maybe not totally honest about all the chemistry of any given product need to know bases! misleading. We have schools Colleges, Academy’s. All offering a level of training but! How qualified? How up to date are those trainers? How much do they really care? How skilled are they? How current are they? How they look! How professional are they/

We have young people coming into the industry with a false idea of how successful they can be. How much there is to learn. How long it takes to be a success. We have Stylist who reach a level of qualification and then sit back knowing everything knowing nothing? Why is this? so many skills to learn so many tools to understand?

We have all these different governing bodies have you ever tried contacting them to ask for a meeting or some information? good luck with that one. Am I out spoken? Well maybe but it’s done it’s said to create discussion, to open up debate, to see who really cares! Not to be politically correct.We have to raise question sot find answers.

I have over the years worked with  many like minded passionate industry professional and they are all of the mind that things could be better standards raised, knowledge shared. education improved so what can we do how can we make a difference?

How can we encourage an exchange of knowledge and information. disclosing of product information in an open transparent manner.  One with sales teams working with and supporting education. Stylist who constantly want to up-date. Teachers trainers. Who really care how to encourage the young stylist to have higher standards, skill, who pride themselves in levels of Service and consultation. This is possible by net working sharing reaching out. We have so many mediums available to us  this is such a huge multifaceted Industry. It’s exciting vibrant. It’s constantly growing, changing evolving, whilst at the same time standing still.

The Linked in professional hairdressing net working group is established in the hopes of attracting like minded people to join share and debate.

The hair salon survival plugging those leaks!

Is your salon leaking are you struggling to stay afloat?

These are tuff times an economy that is slow challenges of competition. Clients looking for deals and discounts the hair industry and owning a salon have many more challenges these days. Are there ways to save money stop wastage plug those unnoticed leaks? Of course there are so many unforeseen running costs in the salons well as the inevitable ongoing expenses. Here are a few tips that might help you. So where can these leeks be van they be plugged? Yes it takes just a few changes in patterns and actions.

1/ We have all done it it constantly happens in the salon those off hand discounts you know the ones That client who is having a tuff time or that special regular you like that one who tips well! Her or his service was maybe full head highlights and cut. You take your client to the reception and say to the receptionist oh just charge for cut and a T section toady! or that cut and blow dry we will just call that a flat X today! this is discounting this is giving away money if your staff member it’s not yours to give! How often does this happen. Add it up it has to stop.The client does not expect it they come for the service and attention you give no need to try and buy loyalty it’s off hand discounting costing the salon £££$$$$ every month and the stylist as commission is less. Change number. One stop this practice across the board!

2/ Carrying to much retail stock.If it’s not moving it’s dead money go the shelf carry what you need and what you know sells. Don’t make up excessively sell more for less! The more you can retail the better the deals with your distributor. Pay invoice on 30 days products constantly change so over stocking on old packaging is dead money you end up either discounting it or using it in the salon.

3/ Products Salon stock. I don’t know how many salons i have been in that have boxes of half used tubes of colour ! Why is this staff are to lazy to look for the used tubes have a system where they must be used prior to new stock being released. This is a major cost to salons stock control.

4/ Product waste over mixing of product and general misuse of products not good for the environment by a gain it adds up a big expense to the salon.How much colour and bleach is left over after any given process! Weigh it measure it keep good records of formulation eye balling formulation is not professional and creates waste! Consider if you do not keep good formulation records how can you emulate the same colour! your sick how does your co worker cover for you !!

5/ A fair and structured commission and reward system one that works for the salon offers incentive but can be afforded. Many salons can be held to ransom by a busy stylist this can be costly it have to be fair for all. make sure appointment bookings and times allocated are managed by the reception. No more added time added extra time just because you enjoy the chat with a certain client!! over the week how many lost appointment does this make for the salon!

If you were to apply these five changes to your salon over a month you would sees noticeable increase in revenue and saving on costs. I’m not suggesting cut backs. I’m suggesting taking control not just as an owner but as stylist . Stop giving those 10 or 15% discount breaks think about product use. Manage your stock both retail and in salon. Think about making these changes it can be nothing but good for all concerned the salon the business the salon and index the staff team. If your giving the best service have great skills offer a wonderful experience that’s all you need to do!

I write this from experience having owned salons but also visited so many where this constantly happens.

Finally start keeping records of the new clients the walk in client see how many re book or come back a second time! Do this over a period then have a staff meeting to discuss retention and re booking. Over 25% of clients who visit a salon for the first time do not return! how much business are you losing!

Some easy steps to make some big changes that could make such a big difference to the salon the staff ad your profitability. Discuss this with your team it cost everyone it could be your survival collaboration not dictating make your team responsible for their part in this. Manage your salon wisely drop old habits remember why your in business. think about the vision you have for your salon your life.

As mentioned we are living through some very challenging economic times. Business models that work no longer seem to.There are no guarantee’s when it comes to customer loyalty. With this comes worries about revenue daily and weekly takings.  Products and techniques come and go Perming, Henna, Highlights, Lowlights,Ombre. All have taken there place in the salon hall of fame for both looks and indeed for profitability. 

Now we have a new challenge facing us! The chemistry of our products is changing at a rapid pace some of the manufacture are less than transparent about how these products work and any possible side effects. Frankly this is worrying and we as professional have to ask more question and be either less trusting  or hold the manufacture to account. The chemistry in many cases of our hair colour has changed Ammonia got gets a bad warp it seems an Alkaline derived from grain has a more natural quality to it so it must be safer and healthier! You decided MEA come from the ethanol family.

Back to the profit the revenue.The services that are great money makers. The safety of the chemicals in the Keratin products [relaxers] our ability to trust the manufacturers of these products. Follow the money…so many stylists see only the quick return the fast cash made from these services, ignoring the cancer, COPD and asthma dangers to ourselves and our clients. In some cases if not the product it self. It’s the reaction caused when high heat is applied and fumes are given off.  Formaldehyde. Aldehydes produce toxic fumes in our salon workspace.  Will we be seeing more and more cases of serious breathing issues and potentially even worse side effects and health issues.

What is it going to take for salon owners and stylist to sit up do some home work ask some key questions about these products.

Greed is winning out over the safety and health issue! What will happen to our industry when the inevitable legal actions start by anyone who has side effects contracted from being around these fumes? We need to wake ourselves and each other up to the very real dangers of these product do your own research read some of the true facts. Don’t trust me i’m just a messenger but wealth is no replacement for health! The manufactures need to be more honest and we stylist have to demand more of them. Ignorance is not an excuse when it comes to health and safety.

Lets take a look at some of the NEW Exciting Keratin hair products: They are designed  to control and smooth out hair get rid of the frizzies make it more manageable :

Well it’s seems like the market in the Keratin based hair products is growing in leaps and bounds it also seems that in an effort to gain market attention the chemistry of these products is in state of constant change  each company claiming more natural less harmful formulations. Some of the reviews I have read are far from favorable as to results attained, having said this to be fair i have had some very positive and open feed back the people at Nano Keratin very open about the product and how and why it works explanation of the process.

Warning flags:

After the initial interest in the Brazilian blow dry then came the first warning about formaldehyde and the fumes given off with the use of high heat flat irons. The main problem seems to be that having replaced the stabiliser formerly Formaldehyde the search was on for new ingredients that did not produce toxic fumes but also allowed for the cuticle to be opened and softened prior to the application of the Keratin. How do these products work quite simply you are opening the cuticle slightly introducing a conditioning product applying a layer a veneer of keratin and then ironing it flat with a hot iron that a simple explanation.

The much bigger explanation is that the products are all slightly different the source of keratin the products used to stabalise and change or manipulate the ph prior to the Keratin application. I read many reviews on the social sights and blog postings as people report their experience some good some bad some just not really that impressed.

This is the topic that started me asking questions: 

It not all doom and gloom and on a positive note i wrote an article on the Nano Keratin Technology  a very interesting keratin product that can be read at.

Another product was highlighted this week in the HJ  Brocoto they market their product as being a Curl interrupted smoothing system. How does this product work this product does not contain formaldehyde. The main point of difference they claim are as follows System does not contain any formaldehyde or give off any type of gas it is very gentle for hair and health. or so it’s claimed .just yesterday i was sent copy of lab report showing high levels of formaldehyde present in products claiming to be safe. The very high het required plays a key roll in the production of the harmful fumes.

They have a two step system, the first phase is a gel which softens the bonds in the hair,the ph of the smoothing gel is 6.85 ,( key ingredient ammonium bisulphite ) with the cuticle now relaxed and slightly open this is when any colour would be added prior to the Keratin application Then the keratin product is added when the bonds are pliable and elongated therefore easily absorbed with gentle heat.the keratin spray is 4.5 to 5.5. This product cannot be over used as the keratin is buffered with other natural ingredients such as acai oil, macadamia seed oil etc. This does not effect other chemical processes The colour does last longer when sealed after ironing with keratin spray. The colour we recommend to use at the same time as the service is an ammonia free demi colour , which does not affect the Ph, my question is demi colour does have an alkaline driver so we are opening an already open cuticle? The keratin is manufactured.  

Relaxers,Straitners, Keratin, Blow out: Sharing a health warning

Over the past week I have written reviews and posted information on the new Keratin hair products designed to relax De frizz promote a healthy look promoted as a system that last up to three months without any damage and side effects.

Much of what i read and re-searched was very exciting but as with all products and claims of the new wonder product did it have side effects. The one thing that did keep coming up as a warning light was initially with the Brazilian Blow out and Formaldehyde the problem being as the heat with the hot iron is applied the fumes can be dangerous. Question raised have and were met with denial in many quarters sadly fears have come to be true as yet only in Canada but a red light is a red light. Please if using these products take care follow all direction protect your self and your client.

Brazilian Blowout Solution Contains Formaldehyde

The Issue:

Health Canada is warning Canadians that Brazilian Blowout Solution manufactured by Brazilian Blowout of California has been found to contain unacceptable levels of formaldehyde. The Brazilian Blowout hair smoothing treatment is known to be available at salons across Canada.

Health Canada has received complaints of burning eyes, nose, and throat, breathing difficulties, and one report of hair loss associated with use of the product.

Testing conducted by Health Canada found that the Brazilian Blowout Solution contains 12% formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is permitted in cosmetics at less than 0.2% when used as a preservative. Formaldehyde is a known irritant, sensitizer, and is linked to cancer in humans when inhaled chronically over a long period of time. Health Canada believes that the reactions are being caused by formaldehyde becoming aerosolized during the blow drying and flat ironing stages of the treatment. Any procedure containing formaldehyde above the allowable limits places clients and stylists at increased risk.

Who is Affected:

Consumers receiving hair smoothing treatments using Brazilian Blowout, and stylists performing the treatment may experience reactions of burning eyes, nose, throat, and breathing troubles.

What Consumers Should Do:

Consumers who have had adverse reactions to Brazilian Blowout treatments are advised to seek medical attention. There is no cause for concern for consumers who have used this product and not experienced any reactions.

Stylists who use Brazilian Blowout treatments should immediately stop using the affected product.

Adverse reactions to cosmetics can be reported to Health Canada using a form available on Health Canada’s website.

Consumers and health professionals can contact Consumer Product Safety toll free at 1-866-662-0666.

Moving on we now have companies rebranding and so re packaging with new formulation claims ALDEHYDES are the term used. are they safe ? what happens when exposed to high heat? In the end you the stylist have to decide is it worth risking?

What is an Aldehyde? It’s the new kid on the block in keratin relaxers. Formaldehyde without the form!!!!!

Aldehyde is now found in many products ingredient listings instead of formaldehyde. Could it be it is derived from a natural source? maybe in the same way as we take Ammonia free as being better because MEA is derived from a natural source. It’s classed as natural herbal organic and so we are lead to believe safer and so Ok! when the fermentation takes place it makes ethanol. A grain Alcohol derivative the alkaline required for the process.

Aldehydes when heated with a flat iron to a heat of 450 degrees in the keratin process produce a gas guess what it’s called? No prizes folks but it’s bad stuff and can be carcinogen!

all good stuff i think worth knowing. I write so much on the topic of questioning product and the difference between what we are told an what is withheld. we have to stay current on all these products as they change and become re invented. . Mike very useful link

Your Salon your dream your vision.Your challenge!

Thinking of starting that dream salon? It can be a huge challenge it could be a nightmare? These are very challenging times a global shift in the way all business is carried out has taken place and  is still taking place. The hair industry has not been immune to this. No exemption card clients demanding better deals many different brands of home hair dye. Professional colour is not the only option.

Is it the right time to open salon go it alone?

Lets assume that your a qualified successful stylist. One that has been in the industry to have a good idea of how things work. Lets assume that you have worked for a long enough period to establish your self as a stylist and have a strong following of loyal clients.

Now let’s assume that you have worked for other people for long enough. You want to start your own business you want to do things your way. You know you can do things better use your experience  and  knowledge to be a success and offer your clients some thing new and different.

Sounds great ha? I think this is the normal path of progress for most hairdressers. We reach appoint where we start to question the way things are done in the salon they are involved in. We think the owner is taking to much of the pie! We know we could do a better job we have a vision. We have a great following of clients. We know our business. We understand our clients, how hard can it be? I think much tufter than many think!

Without dwelling in the past a number of years ago I went through this very scenario. I had out grown the salon i was involved. I say involved in because I had work amy way up and was a director and share holder. Sound good ha. Well it was not enough! Why ? Because i felt i was the busiest in the salon and yet felt i did not have a voice! Was this the case or is the grass just always greener else where! Or is was this just Ego!! I don’t regrets ever but do some times reflect on what might have been if i had made other choices.

It was time to go it alone:

I sold my shares back to my partners used this money to buy a lease. I purchased an existing salon old fashioned shampoo and set joint. I closed it for 2 weeks gutted it with the help of family and friends re opened as trendy up market salon. [not one pictured] My clients all followed the location was great and this is key. In this instance i chose a location that was where all my clients were moving to. Easy parking great location they were happy to pay the same prices that i charged in Chelsea. I had a vision and a goal i was very motivated, I had something to prove to my self and others i could be a success. It worked really well .Why? Because i was in the right place at the right time. This salon attracted other start up salons they tried to do the same thing as more and more sprang up as the area developed. I noticed the odd one failing within a short time. Why? Any market can only sustain so much. What they were creating was on longer new or different, saturation point! I sold this salon within 2 years and made a huge profit the guy who bought went bust with 1 year. What you don’t need is an empty salon!

Why am I telling you this? As a warning think things through. Do your home work. The world we live in has made a huge global shift in the way business is done. Clients needs and wants have changed old business models no longer work. These are challenging times. Would i do it again now . No i would not to much risk i would find a different way of making my dream my vision work! Having a vision and a goal knowing how you might want you salon to run and look is so exciting. But really take the time to think it through. ASK YOUR SELF  what is it you really want? What is it you really want to achieve? My advise would be before leaving the salon you are established in, talk with the owner see if you can buy in. Invest in what already exists share your vision share your concerns discuss change. There is little or no risk in putting out feelers and it could save a great deal of headache in this very fragile economy.  Collaboration and innovative thinking. Having a vision and goals we should all have making them a reality takes a lot of planning forward thinking and soul searching honesty about commitment and risk. You need to work with talented motivated vision sharing stylist’s a team. Think your already part of a team why not just adjust the balance of things.

I decided to write this because not to put any one off but as a warning that it takes huge amount of work and commitment with no guarantees. I read so many comments by people struggling to make end meet trying to attract business. Thinking that discounting is the only way forward disillusioned by the industry and what it takes to get ahead. you might end up on your own struggling with being alone!

I exchange e-mails with people who have started businesses and know find themselves struggling to succeed asking what will it take.  Vision, commitment, willingness to change and adapt, loyal clientele, a team that shares your vision, Capital to support you through the challenges that lie ahead. For it’s not all smooth sailing.

To succeed you need to. Specialise stand out be different. Be highly skilled and knowledgeable in all aspects of our industry or make sure you have a good team of skilled adviser around you. do your home work be honest with your self about what you really want! Salon support staff.Young workers your trainee’s apprentices.

The salon would not function without assistance without that team who work so hard to support the stylist from. Shampooing to mixing hair dye or colour to sweeping the floor. making coffee helping clients.

Working behind the scene to maintain.

Every salon has and needs these the young enthusiastic trainee and assistants often underpaid over worked and in some case taken advantage of. Not every assistant is training or doing an apprenticeship. For some the role they have is just to keep the salon running support the stylist and team. They work relentlessly shampooing, doing towels,washing and drying. sweeping, making coffee, filling up and replacing products.

They are the unsung heroes in the salon. Often taken for gratitude sometimes ignored. A salon could not work with out them. Stylist and salon owners should not treat these young people or indeed ask or expect them to do anything they would not be willing to do themselves. Respect  your fellow work mates team members. Never forget we were once just like them! did you ever resent a stylist? I did.

In many cases it’s the apprentice that is used for these roles doing many of the salon support chores. This can only be acceptable if the salon has in place a proper structured training programs of both in salon training, model nights and day release for college to attain the necessary level of qualification. Sadly in to many cases young trainee’s and brought into the salon paid minimum wage promised a good training that never materialises.

Both salon owners and indeed stylists who benefit for all the help and support these young people give.  You owe it to them to give time to make sure that get full and proper training. You should embrace this it can be so rewarding don’t look at it as chore  think of it as a challenge with huge rewards. Remember the day will come when you will need some help or wish the trainee was better trained!  Any stylist however busy cannot expect to use these these young trainees and not give back of their time and knowledge, skill to not mentor and train will only lead to the apprentice trainee getting disillusioned  and eventually leaving. the drop out rate in out industry is so high.

We all need to think back to our own journey and training was it a good experience? What would you like to have had more of? Make your apprentices experience better! This raises standards and encourage them to carry this on into their career. Think about the many aspects and skills one has to learn! As an owner be part of this encourage it. lead by example.

We can all make a difference sharing and giving off ourselves and our time is one such way.What is the point of having skill and knowledge and not sharing it? Look for the best in these young people an help them to develop into amazing creative salon team members. Also make them accountable for their actions and attitude for this is a two way street of giving sharing mutual respect commitment and trust.

Invest in your team and your salon will flourish. Collaborate, encourage creativity, investing both time and money into training is investing in your business now and in the future to abuse and neglect staff training issues is to fail in the long run it’s leads to decent and can be very disruptive to business.

Invest your time get to know these young trainee’s and apprentices share with then your communication skills your people skills your passion. What you will get back is far more support loyalty trust respect. In the salon and in life we have to unconditionally give out to get back sharing mentoring those skills that wisdom and knowledge are no different. Support your trainee’s and apprentices. Invest in your self by investing time in others!
