Hair salon influences and change

The hair Industry is multi dynamic in it’s many branches that come together under the heading.

From: The salon to manufacturing from manufacturing to education skill training, personal development. Career path and challenges.

Educator, artistic team member, platform artist, salon owner, manager, freelance/chair or booth renter. distributor or sales representative.

Change happens it’s constant from the products that are available to us. This new must have technology  we have to have. However we also need to question how and why they work understand any side effects Are they safe ! We must be educated on these products feel confident they are safe for us and our clients.

What dives the invention and investment into research of new product technology? Is it sales and profit yes of course. First and foremost it’s driven by Media demand from promotion and advertising. Now with the internet with the tablet with the android more than ever, clients can see it see instantly the results see the look they are hooked they want it!

Of course it’s our job to deliver but it’s also our professional duty to be the moral compass. We have to have the knowledge and the skill to inform advise and educate our clients on the products it’s pro’s and con’s for there will always be both!

Influences.

This economy this global shift has been a wake up call to any one in business and we in the hair industry are not and have not been immune to this. The seasonal spikes that we could rely on no longer exist that Christmas rush that spring make over that pre holiday do!

Staying in touch with discussion groups and forums shows me that many salons are struggling, many are looking for a way to turn things around. Many are relying to discounting, some are taking short cuts maybe compromising on product quality. Just treading water trying to survive.

We all need to take a deep breath evaluate where we are what we want. Re visits those goals that vision and re focus. We have to embrace new technology. We have to collaborate more with staff or team members. Learn to use the power of the media social net works collaborate with staff to promote the salon it’s services in a positive way.

Be strong enough to seek out professional help and advise. Maybe we need to think of this shift as a new beginning, a time for reinvention, a time to revaluate and start with over with a new rekindled energy and out look, Change and indeed challenges can and do seem so daunting because it forces us to look at things in different light encourages us to think out the the box.

We can all make difference in so many ways. Start with that vision build your team have an ongoing in house training program. Develop your team have apprentices train then share your skills investing them they are the future become the teachers develop your an their future, use the colleges for the theory for you trainees to get certified work with the colleges and collaborate on training for they certainly don’t have all the answers they need also to adapt to the industry changes and salon demands.

Work to develop these young enthusiastic creative stylists grow with them, grow develop and learn together.

Products source what works for you both for salon use and retail don’t carry to much stock. Address the skills and passions of each and every salon member, encourage courses and extra training both in salon and external. work with your manufacturer and supplier on education up date and in houses training events. . The salon as a whole has to have the highest standards of training and expertise, individually encourage  specialisation become unique a destination location a place of excellence in even field. The palace that is talked about a place that people want to be associated with. Community involvement, be it linked to the gym healthy centre or supporting local events collaboration innovative thinking.

How do we get beyond thinking of ‘clients as one time walk in’s’ and consider them as long term potentials?

When will we start to consider all those clients who ‘come once never to return’ ! Those lost opportunities to make a first and last impression. When will we take the time to think. ‘In fixing someone else’s mistakes’ will it could it cost me potential ‘Clients’. Part of this new thinking is. ‘We are in the service industry’. ‘We are not in the server industry’. Professional boundaries and mutual respect must exist. The client is not always right neither are we balance and being open to change and the unexpected and dealing with and addressing issues solving problems.

That first impression the personal image we present. How we communicate and articulate our suggestions the art of listening. Being a professional in your field of expertise thus giving sound advise. Executing and delivering the service advise in highly skilled professional way with the highest expertise and skill offering a wonderful experience. Charging for your time and expertise. No discounting. No little bit off at the cash register. Being paid for a job well done. This is what a client expects and wants nothing more nothing less. Discounting could suggest that ‘you did not do your job as well as you could have’. ‘It will be better next time’. ‘Thank you for letting me try’. ‘Sorry i could have tried harder’. Do any of these a good message? a message of professional confidence and assertiveness.

Yes things have changed they will continue to change to challenge us so we have to learn to embrace adapt and be ready so that we can keep up with the every changing demands and wants that our industry dictates as it grows and developed. We all have the strength to do this .We can also connect with other professional share experience seek advise offer advise competition is not always a good thing  it can become so distractive and negative both within the salon and  if competing with business around you. Discounting is competition sadly it’s not he who gives the biggest discount who wins.

We all have new technology new products new tools. Constantly changing techniques and demands to sill levels. We have an industry in a state of flux. We have change and challenges to face. We have social media devices and we all have to embrace all the changes and the challenges they pose. Exciting times is the only way to look at it.

              Is there need for change in our industry? 

                                  ‘If so’

                How can this change happen?

Sadly although it can happen by itself when this happens it’s not normally good and positive change. It’s a change that happens slowly over time normally caused by neglect and complacency.

Rather than point out areas that need to change or be addressed i think it better to look at the big picture and how positive on going change can and will impact our industry. Not every one is open to change some might even be dead against it but it happens with or without some guidance and direction when this happens it can become quiet chaotic and seem very random and uncoordinated.

The hair industry has so many facets that it becomes quite hard to think about it as a whole I think of it more as many smaller units that are all linked under one umbrella ‘our industry’.

From Salon ownership.To Distributor.To Manufacturing. These might be considered the three main arms with other avenues leading off and yet connected within the industry.

This might be Stylists. Training education. Product knowledge. Product education. Platform work Product promotion. This would then break down again into others area. Colleges.Academy. Salon training. Product educator Sales person. Artistic team member and so on. Many avenues to many to split them up.

What has changed over the years? Certainly government involvement in standards and levels of training by the setting up of training standard bodies creating over legislation has this been for the better good of the industry? For both the standards and indeed for the types attracted into the profession? Are the right people steering controlling and setting mandates for our industry?

The number of colleges and academy’s. The standards they teach  the number of students they produce qualified each year. Is it now just a business and  way to control unemployment numbers? Should they work more closely with the industry at grass roots levels the salon and business owner the end consumer of the trainee’s.The industry expected to employ these constantly growing number of newly qualified professionals.

Manufacturers the products they produce, they way they market them. Do they respect our industry or dictate to it? Should they be more transparent about the products they expect us to use and promote. The salon business. Is on longer seasonal. The demands from stylist are different. The way we can connect with our clients is different. what clients demand is constantly changing. The age of expected discounting is consuming many salon and spa owners.

I do not have al the answers to the points raised but i do know that over the years we have allowed these changes to influence our industry. These changes some good some not so good now effect and influence our profession greatly. Judging by the number of industry professional voicing opinion globally on various professional group forums the need and want for change is growing. Build up a Linkedin professional profile join a some groups become active.One such group ‘professional hairdresser knowledge networking group’

There are many passionate motivated professional who work tirelessly to try and raise awareness and have a voice. Every salon every spa has the power to make change happen. How. By starting in your own salon with staff and owner collaboration with innovative thinking. By taking action start to think about and discuss the things your ant to change have a vision and work towards it salon owners stop competing with each other by our discounting each other you are hurting your selves some time competition is not healthy it’s distractive and negative.

Start in salon training develop your team have high standards start hold the manufactures accountable for the products they expect us to use. Join discussion groups share your voice have opinion.When things are not acceptable say so communicate openly with staff. learn and understand how to use social net working and multi media to your advantage. Encourage personal development as well as salon and team development. Take back control of your business and so a little bit of our industry by being educated skilled and professional. Being informed having knowledge is power having opinion and sharing views is powerful.

Finally the internet and the information available we cannot trust everything that is posted to be totally true we owe it to our sleeves and those we work with or influence to do a great deal of research to make sure the facts that we are presented with are correct. To be willing and open for change and challenges to embrace all the new possibilities available to us.

The internet is a marketing tool as well as an information high way so we have to all learn to navigate it and stay current and up to date!

I hope that this starts up some discussion and gives me some feed back.

Respect trust vision. In the salon/Spa

 Respect Trust vision: “RTV”

Respect:

Do you respect your staff ? Do they respect you? Without respect it can be so very hard if not impossible to have a salon running smoothly without and hitches or staffing issues. How does one gain and retain respect in the work place? First and foremost it’s a two way street other wise known as mutual respect.  How does it work? It’s earned over time by actions, commitment, sharing of a vision. Making positive change happen. Being inspirational to those around you. Being a leader. Being a listener . None of this happens over night it takes time to develop. It can not be brought and yet it is invaluable. Respect encourages those around you to listen and or take action to embrace change. Lack of respect can and is very disruptive it creates many issues especially in a leadership or management situation. Once lost it’s very hard to regain.

In the salon or spa environment respect for each other open communication collaboration will enable the salon to function without distraction, without the disfunction that can be created when respect is lost and chaos per sues. In one of many forms from staffing issues and poor management decisions general morale. An openness with regard to salon /spa running and the big picture a sharing of a vision a willingness to listen and on occasion make changes is all part of being respected being a leader you also must give respect to those around you. Ultimately this contributes to better salon management a better working environment and so creating an atmosphere that works to the benefit of all concerned. Clients can and do pick up on this.

 Trust: 

Closely and many might say running side by side with respect is ‘Trust’ this we build. Without trust it’s really is very hard to function and get anything done. To not be trusted or have trust in some one or some thing creates negativity it will slowly bring you or your business down. If this is an issue you really do need to spend some time think it through. If it’s a person a team mate employee ask the question. Why? Don’t you trust them. Can it be addressed is it a situation that can be fixed. If not before making that tuff decisions seek advise from those around you, those you respect ! If it’s a thing then it’s much easier however good it might be if it’s not working for you and you cannot get past trusting it get rid of it! Don’t waste time and energy on things that don’t warrant it.

Without Trust in a salon between every member of the team decent can rapidly creep in negative energy can be and is so distractive. If this is the case council those team members work mates managers that you respect and make decisions on how to address and deal with any situation that might arise. Don’t be hasty consider the situation what created it. Decide on an informed course of action.

 Vision:

Finally that vision this is yours. In this case it’s of your business but it can relate to any aspect of your life for each and very one should have a vision. In this instance we are relating it to work. Once you have clear vision share it with those around you. Those you Respect and trust make sure they share this vision with you so that you are all working toward the same goal.

By sharing your vision with team members you are not only sharing your vision for the future you are also showing that you respect and trust them. There is a synergy between the three words. That synergy comes to fruition when put into action. When action starts to happen, things start to change, they start to progress. As this happens embark on constructive dialogue with team mates and staff members collaborate encourage  new thoughts and ideas innovative idea’s that might help your vision become a reality for all those sharing it with you.

The look the challenge the journey all working together to make it happen and share in the success. Having a vision a goal is what motivates and drives us sharing a vision with others helps it become a reality.

Have the right team wanting and willing to share your vision respecting your commitment trusting you to share thoughts views opinions trust a willingness to listen and collaborate.

The hair salon and the stylist.

The key role of the Stylist /Hairdresser in the salon:

We have in recent topic’s talked about. How important the role of the receptionist is and how the reception area is the hub of the salon  what a key role they plays in the smooth running of the salon. We have looked at the hard work that all trainee’s and apprentices put in. The commitment and loyalty in so many cases for very low wages minimum  wage is so out of touch with the cost of living fro these young up coming stylists. They work really hard in the hope of getting well trained we should all make sure that they get the very best.

Now lets look at the roll of the stylist.

As important as both of the positions above are what about. the stylist. The hairdresser. The colour technician and huge role they playe. Without a professional team the salon would not exist or function. Let’s stake a look at the role of the stylist. From the time the stylist get to the salon to start their day they must have their game face on. That image of being a true professional. Highly skilled. Creative. With excellent communication skills and technical ability. In-fact their day should start before they ever get to work getting ready for the day. Clothes, make up image all so key for that first impression. The way you dress and the way your hair looks is representative of who you are what you do. We have to leave our personal issues and baggage at home it’s show time.

 As a stylist’s you have to be a team players. We have to be multi be able to multi task! This can be anything from helping to keep the salon running on occasion. Sweeping the floor, washing colour bowls, towel duty. Yes all in a days work! Manage your day your appointment list be organised. This involves working with team and staff members. The receptionist can help you to keep your day running smoothly and  keep you fully booked!. Apprentices and trainee’s again they help you keep your day running on time and with out a hitch offering client support and assistance and service.

As a stylist apart from ongoing skill and training. Communication and consultation skills are really so important. Being a good listener helps. Keeping good up to date client records is also very key to ongoing success and good client retention. It shows the client that you care makes them feel special. As a stylist we are in the business of making recommendation and problem solving. To do this we have to make sure our skills are always up to date. This can be hands on technical ability and indeed product knowledge both in the area of the products we use are constantly changing and evolving  as indeed with retail products knowledge.

As stylists although we don’t like to think of our selves as being sales people and in the service industry we are. You sell through recommendation either by offering a new service or treatment or by recommending retail products to complement and maintain both condition and looks created in the salon. Every thing you do is related to service the experience you offer. That is what you do that is why clients come back great service and consultation.

As a team or staff member although it’s not generally insisted upon getting and being involved in ongoing personal skill up dates and training should be part of your routine. As should skill sharing by giving of your time to share your skill and knowledge with the apprentices and trainees you owe it to them.Yes they help you make you day work it’s time to give back !! you were like them once never forget that. This can be done on a rotation depending on size of the salon and policy.

 Getting busy, being established in the salon both as a staff and team member takes time. But as you develop both as a personality and accomplished stylist so trust and respect develop. At the same time communication and sharing of views and opinions with those around you should be developed become a true team member. Building relationships with Salon owner. Manager. Fellow stylists. Reception and yes trainees.  This is all part of  helping to create an environment for creative thinking. Collaboration on projects and idea’s for improvements be an innovator. Don’t become done of those negative seen it all done it all types that can be so negative to moral in a salon.

Got an idea share it! make it happen!

Challenge your self and those around you be inspiring mentor those young trainees. Be actively involved in promoting the salon. Look for ways to improve your skills courses and training events. Suggest the salon get involved in competition. These have been and are challenging times in our industry it’s my belief that by staying current being professional offering great service being excited and passionate about what you do sharing that excitement with your clients thats a key to being a success.

We wear many hats and great deal is expected of us. Focus on what you are good at and passionate about don’t try and spread your self to thin as i have said the salon is a team so if your great at women’s hair love colouring and putting hair up stick to that.  Specialise in that let others do mens hair or kids for example. Everyone should find their niche in the salon this makes the salon whole. Remember you multi task you have to look great. you are highly skilled. You offer great service and what you charge or the salon charges is reflective of that. Valued added is not discounting to stay busy it’s giving exceptional value for money.

Look at all the skills you have? the tools you use! the power you have to make change happen!

Remember as a stylist you are the product it’s all the clients you do and retain that keeps the salon going and pays all those running costs. The receptionist. The trainee pays your wages. But it’s a team event you are a big part of that team. How ever busy you are how ever good you are don’t let EGO get the better of you don’t start thinking you are better than those around you .Very dangerous no one is indispensable.

The stylist. The Hairdressers. The true professional hard working committed passionate. key to the successor every salon and business.

Remember you. We are all part of that machine that is the hair industry. The part we all play as team members makes the salon run and work for us all.  Keep your standards high challenge your self be and inspiration to those around you.

Professional groups representing the hairdressing industry

This is topic on our industry our future can we all make and accept change?

What is the way forward for our industry? How do we strike a balance one that represents businesses and Salon owners yet works with training bodies and institutions.One that fairly reflects every aspect of our industry from the trainee and or apprentices to stylists and salon owners one that collaborates and works in unison with further education colleges academies and institutions. Is it possible ? I like to think it is but change has to happen.Thinking has to change a new chapter need to be written!

Having just attended an industry discussion day by one of the many Training bodies / Institutions funded by government working to government guidelines. It came to my attention that this discussion had no representation by any one from the hairdressing industry in the private sector other than me ! Its was not a very well attended gathering all females and all representing colleges, further education, and private institutions. The big question is are these publicly funded groups and bodies out of touch with what’s going on at salon level should they try and remedy this? The challenges facing salon owners staff retention training and apprenticeship programs re gigged re named re vamped submerged in red tape and paper work. No mention of collaboration between salons and colleges no passion no vision lots of acronyms and abbreviated words. “ACE” “SASE” ‘ASCL” who cares do students trainee’s ? salon owners? No they want facts they want easy to understand easy to implement ! Shared within passion by motivated inspiring innovative speakers. Who are interesting and engaging!

A minimum wage for apprentices was discussed frankly so out of touch with reality and hardly surprising that so many young people drop out or fail to get qualified as stylists. When having open discussion about any aspects of the industry it’s not representative of feelings points of view much less needs and concerns if salon owners and indeed all bodies related to the industry are not consulted. Education and training is as we all know really important!  But if it’s not done listening to the wants needs and concerns of the salon owners the end consumer of these trained up young stylist whats it all for???

We in many cases have a system now with little or no collaboration between Further education colleges, training institutions and salons. More time needs to be put into understanding salon owners and the industry more hairdressers and industry professional need to be attracted into these bodies bring to the table hands on experience and skill knowledge about products. Bring to the fore front the dangers of some products.Working with manufacture to be more transparent about some products and how they work the chemistry they contain.

Goals and vision for collaboration with salons working with Further education colleges for work experience less red tape less bureaucracy less government intervention in an industry they do not understand at street level. I went to this meeting my mistake was not asking what the agenda was or the format was for discussion was it a forum or did it have an agenda that allowed for discussion and opinion and raising questions. I was also shocked that apart from myself  the representation of trainers and further education representatives were all female. In an industry that claims that only males make it to celebrity level. Something I dispute know ing some very talent female stylist and platform artists! But why do not more males get involved at college level an area dominated by women at all levels from senior management to in salon training levels.

I think these professional bodies all do a great job. But i also feel that they need to do much more to attract and get involved where it counts they need to strike up communication with salon owners listen to their concerns encourage collaboration innovative thinking that got beyond just training manuals and strict guide lines. Hairdressing is a passionate creative industry when events are staged they should reflect this not be bland and beige. When inspiring people, when doing presentation. we have so many tools available to us now, the day of power point and just standing talking in mono tone just does not work! It’s does not inspire nor does it attract a true cross section of the industry and all the talented successful business people who could contribute so much. Although this is a Uk example i would be interested to hear feed back from other  countries what works for you on this international issue . Is it any different for you?

Do you think that professional bodies should have more professional representation when it comes to direction and planing on education training and all aspects related to our industry. Should these bodies have to collaborate more with salons and stylist.

Should apprentices be asked for an opinion on the training they aregiven and the model they worked with? How was there experience? Salon owners institutions stylist businesses we have to work together to develop our industry secure it’s future stability and  make it work for all of our future an that of new stylist and trainee’s coming into our industry.

Challenging times in the hair salon.

These days knowing how to cut hair. Colour or dye hair is not enough to succeed!

The hair salon for so long classed as a safe little to no risk business. Everyone will always need a haircut. low overheads and good profit margins. But not any more to owning a salon, being good with people being a good all rounder is not enough. These are challenging times and more and more we hear about struggles. We hear stylist and owners questioning what used to work does not any more. Clients have the ability to look for the best deals and discounts.This questions customer loyalty and client retention. Stylist want more than just a basic wage.Young stylist leave college with such high wage expectation newly qualified they think they know everything and world is their oyster!!!!

Product’s many have improved some are misleading and dangerous. As professional we have to make and hold some of the manufactures to account. They have to be more transparent about product content and any possible health implications. Insurance, liability, health safety. tax, licenses. Is it all worth it?

The global shift  in economies has touched every one for many created fear and a longing for the good old days. I feel that although things are tuff and everyone is sailing in unchartered waters, the true professionals the ones who can embrace change will come through these hard time stronger and better equipped for the future. Change is scary but it’s also positive. Innovative thinking staff collaboration, creativity. These are the future.

These  standards and etching have to start at grass roots in the college and academy with the young apprentice encourage that wanting to question and lean that need for answers. That passion this will only come when standards are raised by those running and teaching in these institutions. The future is training up the stylists of tomorrow and making sure they have product awareness and are ready to question and demand answers. Salons teams have to be on the right and the same tracks to succeed.

Salon owners have to realise that discounting is very short sighted it’s a game when salons in any area start the discount game all business suffers. Service, skill, creativity, honest, communication, value for money these are the keys to success. Having a strong and focused team all working together. Work together share the rewards together.  

Working on line has taught me just how many industry passionate motivated professionals there are who really try to make a difference. Who are willing to share their views experience and opinions.To reach out and support others. Raise questions ,look deeper than the surface

How ever tuff things are for you and your business it will get better it can better. Reach out for help an support think out side the box. Challenges are how we grow and get stronger we are in the business after all of solving problems and correcting wrongs!

We have to embrace this changing world and all the issues that we face in our business. We have to communicate and net work We have to seek out others to share views with ask for professional help .Most importantly remember why you came into this industry what was your vision? Has it changed? Does it need to change? Change and the challenges it presents  are positive.

Hair colour make over colour correction

Our tool box of knowledge is full: We also have to have an understanding of hair colour.Different types of hair dye and trust the colour chart.

Lets consider what is a make over and what would be classed as mild correction.

Before I introduce client and stylist, lets share a little history. This young lady is in her teenage years. Like most teenagers experimented  home colour and going Blonde. One day she decided that she would go to a professional stylist and have it taken from being to blonde back to her own colour a basic colour dye job! or so she thought.

The picture to the below is after the salon had to attempts at correcting it back to her own colour. The result being hair with a green Hue know by us professionals as Mud. Why Mud? well when re pigmentation of the hair is required it is essential to re build the hairs natural pigment mantle using the correct shade of dye consulting the colour chart helps. If you don’t do this and apply the incorrect shades and tones the pigments can clash with each other or neutralise each other out causing a muddy colour. Once this has happened it’s really hard to  re balance it.

What happened in this case was an under qualified hairdresser took the job on she applied her natural level as a tint or permanent colour using 6N with 20 volume peroxide with out any thought to pigment missing the effect of adding yet more lift to the hair. no consideration to poor condition, past history and finally the under tone pigment in that level 6N.

A totally mess when it went wrong she then tried toning it with various other shades to kill the green hue hence the mud shade created. she even had the audacity to charge for this total mess. the young girl knew no better than to pay. having been lead to trust this was the best the colour could be!

How do you fix this? Could you?

Well let me introduce to you Kate our client and Alex out stylist:

This really is a challenge. To have the full history of the above hair colour disaster maybe find out what hair dye was used, Alex has to do his consultation with Kate. The key here is for Alex to get as much information a she can about past history and also get a clear idea as to expectation. At this point he has to honestly tell Kate what is possible.This cannot be ego driven it has to be within his own skill and ability. Trust me when i say it takes a bigger person to say sorry this is beyond me than to muddle on. Remember we have already had one professional screw up. As soon as Alex agrees to take this on he assume all responsibility for it. [ strand test, optional client wavier release form, fully advised of process]. Having chatted with Kate two things are established she knows her hair is very over processed and damaged she wants to look and feel better she is open to change both of colour and cut.

Alex goes on to explain  that although the really bad colour in her hair looks dark drab muddy due to the condition it will not last very long and could gentle be removed, they could then either re pigment and go warmer or they could go lighter but with many natural shades.

Alex explains that the first thing they will do is a mild cocktail made from shampoo.Bleach decolouriser. conditioner.and low volume peroxide.This will remove all the muddy pigment and give them a stripped canvas to work from. Kate says sounds like I’m in for a long visit . Alex say well once we see what we can lift out we can see what the best course of action will be for our future colour. Alex say’s don’t worry Kate we can fix this. Your lucky that your  natural skin tone and eye colour leave the door open for colour options. Really says kate never thought of that!

Off to the back wash for the cocktail.

Note whilst Alex is mixing I will insert some information  on a cocktail formulation.

A bleach bath or cocktail formulation:

As i said many variables to lift out residue of old fashion shade try Clarifying shampoo or a bleach bath Shampoo bleach washed through and worked into hair. {if doing this stay with it constantly watching}

If making up a cocktail to lift old shades out try.

*1/2 oz Clarifying shampoo.

*1oz      Water.

*1oz       20 vol peroxide {or cream developer}

*1 oz      powder bleach.

Apply to clean towel dried hair, work through on area needing lift for 5 to 10 mins. watching all the time wash out rinse thoroughly.

This in itself i class as a colour correction tool, as mild as it is you must stay with it know wondering off for a smoke, a chat a coffee.This is serious stuff!

Alex works the formulation into kate’s hair once whilst applying it warns her it’s a bit cold and bit smelly! you could say that say Kate. Alex gets a wide comb and continually combes the formula  into and through her hair gradually the mixture starts to work it’s lifting. All that mud is going down the drain. After about 20minutes he is happy done he says no we can get going. he rinses a very light shampoo to remove any traces of the formula  cool water .Now he says sitting kate back down we will lightly dry it and decide on course of action.

To the colour and formulation: Thus far i very impressed with the skill Alex is showing and professional approach. We have now removed all that muddy un-wanted pigment Alex has a better idea of what is possible so he has a better vision to share with Kate. How serious is she about change? Alex says to Kate as you can see we have removed all that muddy colour. Kate says yes i back where i started but ££ pounds lighter. Right says Alex lets establish two things colour and style. Right he says with some authority I see it fair bit shorter but with texture and movement.

Colour wise lets work with the blonde, but re introduce shades that work with you, let beige this out with caramels, toffee, cool blondes and burnt honey golds. WOW ! Says Kate you can do that, Yes we can it will look great how does it sound to you amazing. Ok say’s Alex given how over processed your hair is all we have to do is deposit different shades and buildup the pigment long term work on the colour retention.I can recommend some products to help both with moisiture in your hair and colour retention qualities if you like great says Kate.

Lets get going. You ready says Alex!  First thing i’m going to do is cut a fair bit of hair off we don’t need to colour all this waste time money and product .Out comes the razor and things start to take shape. Once the bulk of the weight has been removed and shape formed. Alex, say’s to Kate feel good yes say’s Kate. Right now lets sort out this colour bear with me whilst i mix up some Formulations.

Whilst Alex is Mixing I will share with you the Different formulations:

Demi Deposit Only: Tone on tone or darker lift or higher levels of Hydrogen peroxide are not required! Remember we are going for deposit Only this over processed hair does not need any more peroxide and lift.

First Colour level 6 BR[Beige Red] remember first letter dictates stronger shade. In this choice Alex is choosing a rich beige shade but also re introducing some warm pigment back in to the hair,a wise choice. 1oz[30 grams] 6RB 2oz [60grams]  demi lotion developer. Second choice 7 GB [gold beige] again more re introduction of pigment quantity as above 1 part colour to 2 parts Demi lotion. Final choice 6B just beige will have a stronger depth than other choices.formulation as above. These are all none progressive colour formulations no need to worryabout over deposit.

Back with Alex. He explains to Kate we are going to re introduce three different shades into your hair and at the same time replace some of the warmer pigments this will give depth and tone.At the same time we will leave out some chunks of the existing blonde we will tone this later to create a nicely controlled Beige blonde that will compliment the look and style. sounds great says Kate.Oh Alex says we are also going to use the same shade sin panels in the under part of your hair to create some depth and dimension. lets get going with all these colours.

Alex works quickly with great skill we weaves out different section choosing where to place the shades and panels. Once finished he takes section from the base hair line applying the different shades in solid blocks. working from the hair line nape up to just below the occipital bone jaw line just above the ears. thus creating solid block area of three shades. leaving out the lighter chunks of pre lifted hair in the top section.

Finally all applied leaves it to process around 20 minutes no heat required!! [Heat is not good for colour, it’s not needed colouring is a process of fromulation and timing] all that is required is the correct choice of products and patients!

After 20 minutes Alex takes kate to the back wash rinse of all colour .Then decides to apply a Beige toner to control the Blonde that was left out and tie the beige theme into together. As he works the Toner into Kate’s  hair he stays with it as it starts to work on the yellow blonde  sections creating a really nice cool natural beige. Done re rinsed shampooed  conditioned ready for a little more razor work and a blow dry.

Well what a great job Alex managed to save the day and Kate looks amazing i hope you agree that this was a job well done. As for Kate well happy does not even cover the emotion she felt and how pleased she was.
