Your Salon your dream your vision.Your challenge!

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea’s. B2MR

Thinking of starting that dream salon? It can be a huge challenge it could be a nightmare? These are very challenging times a global shift in the way all business is carried out has taken place and  is still taking place. The hair industry has not been immune to this. No exemption card clients demanding better deals many different brands of home hair dye. Professional colour is not the only option.

Is it the right time to open salon go it alone?

Lets assume that your a qualified successful stylist. One that has been in the industry to have a good idea of how things work. Lets assume that you have worked for a long enough period to establish your self as a stylist and have a strong following of loyal clients.

Now let’s assume that you have worked for other people for long enough. You want to start your own business you want to do things your way. You know you can do things better use your experience  and  knowledge to be a success and offer your clients some thing new and different.

Sounds great ha? I think this is the normal path of progress for most hairdressers. We reach appoint where we start to question the way things are done in the salon they are involved in. We think the owner is taking to much of the pie! We know we could do a better job we have a vision. We have a great following of clients. We know our business. We understand our clients, how hard can it be? I think much tufter than many think!

Without dwelling in the past a number of years ago I went through this very scenario. I had out grown the salon i was involved. I say involved in because I had work amy way up and was a director and share holder. Sound good ha. Well it was not enough! Why ? Because i felt i was the busiest in the salon and yet felt i did not have a voice! Was this the case or is the grass just always greener else where! Or is was this just Ego!! I don’t regrets ever but do some times reflect on what might have been if i had made other choices.

It was time to go it alone:

I sold my shares back to my partners used this money to buy a lease. I purchased an existing salon old fashioned shampoo and set joint. I closed it for 2 weeks gutted it with the help of family and friends re opened as trendy up market salon. [not one pictured] My clients all followed the location was great and this is key. In this instance i chose a location that was where all my clients were moving to. Easy parking great location they were happy to pay the same prices that i charged in Chelsea. I had a vision and a goal i was very motivated, I had something to prove to my self and others i could be a success. It worked really well .Why? Because i was in the right place at the right time. This salon attracted other start up salons they tried to do the same thing as more and more sprang up as the area developed. I noticed the odd one failing within a short time. Why? Any market can only sustain so much. What they were creating was on longer new or different, saturation point! I sold this salon within 2 years and made a huge profit the guy who bought went bust with 1 year. What you don’t need is an empty salon!

Why am I telling you this? As a warning think things through. Do your home work. The world we live in has made a huge global shift in the way business is done. Clients needs and wants have changed old business models no longer work. These are challenging times. Would i do it again now . No i would not to much risk i would find a different way of making my dream my vision work! Having a vision and a goal knowing how you might want you salon to run and look is so exciting. But really take the time to think it through. ASK YOUR SELF  what is it you really want? What is it you really want to achieve? My advise would be before leaving the salon you are established in, talk with the owner see if you can buy in. Invest in what already exists share your vision share your concerns discuss change. There is little or no risk in putting out feelers and it could save a great deal of headache in this very fragile economy.  Collaboration and innovative thinking. Having a vision and goals we should all have making them a reality takes a lot of planning forward thinking and soul searching honesty about commitment and risk. You need to work with talented motivated vision sharing stylist’s a team. Think your already part of a team why not just adjust the balance of things.

I decided to write this because not to put any one off but as a warning that it takes huge amount of work and commitment with no guarantees. I read so many comments by people struggling to make end meet trying to attract business. Thinking that discounting is the only way forward disillusioned by the industry and what it takes to get ahead. you might end up on your own struggling with being alone!

I exchange e-mails with people who have started businesses and know find themselves struggling to succeed asking what will it take.  Vision, commitment, willingness to change and adapt, loyal clientele, a team that shares your vision, Capital to support you through the challenges that lie ahead. For it’s not all smooth sailing.

To succeed you need to. Specialise stand out be different. Be highly skilled and knowledgeable in all aspects of our industry or make sure you have a good team of skilled adviser around you. do your home work be honest with your self about what you really want! What risks are you prepared to take ?????? need help contact me.

Investing In Oneself

Investing in oneself

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR regular postings of fresh new topic’s http://www.back2myroots.co.uk/

sharing my vision

sharing my vision

Investing in oneself!

What does investing in oneself really mean?  Is it costly?  Is it worth while?  Let me tell you, investing in oneself does not have to be financial –  it could simply be time well spent!  We must all look in the mirror and be honest about what needs attention or adjusting, but the real key is knowing, from the bottom of your heart, what you truly want and where you want to go.  Your vision. your dream, your quest.

This of course does not mean that financial expense is not part of this. Sometimes parting with hard earned cash is the driver and the motivator. to seek help, do the work, reap the rewards.

This help comes in many forms. It could be helpful books, seminars, courses, presentations, demonstrations. The key is to have a vision of what you want, where you want your career to go.

Think of your career as a bus journey. Lots of people on board with you, but hey, you’re the driver, take your eyes off the road and oops.

Take charge of your bus

Are you in the driving seat?

The things we do define us. It’s these things that motivate, and inspire us. Question who you are, what you do, what really empowers you. The challenge is to ensure you have the right knowledge and tools to feel empowered. That feeling of positive affirmation will help you take charge and live your dream.

Courses, be they technical, hands on, shows, or demonstrations, are all very worth while.

However the real motivator is being creatively challenged, getting excited, having fun at work and in your life.

Over the past months my personal mission has been to build an internet presence: networking, learning to write a blog, creating a professional hairdressing group. Although at times frustrating and very challenging, it has forced me outside of my comfort zone, a place none of us like to be. Over this period I have had the great fortune to meet, share thoughts and ideas, with some really positive like minded people. These are inspirational, passionate, industry professionals. They have a vision. These are the people I want on my bus to learn from, share with, take a journey with.

Creating something new, learning something new, is not easy.  At times it can be frustrating, scary, emotional, but with time, patience, commitment, it can be so rewarding.

You can invest in yourself by sharing with others.Yes! Sometimes we have to put out, give something away to get so much more back. It’s the balance of the way things work.

Teaching and sharing. These are the keys to success and personal growth. What is the point in knowing lots if you don’t share? For me it comes under one umbrella, ‘experience, strength, hope.’ These three things in some ways can define who we are, what we want.

What do you want? What are you prepared to do? What lengths will you go to to fulfill your vision?

You also need to look around you on the bus. Who do you want on this journey, who needs to get off at the next stop! Some will get off along the way. That’s life and that’s ok.

who do you want to journey with

people get on and off along the way!

It is my firm belief that people come into our lives for a reason. Some times it’s a lesson we need to learn. Some stay around for a while, but eventually they get off for they are on their own journey.

A very few are in for the long haul. These are the people who we exchange more than thought and vision with. We exchange energy, that motivation, that excitement, that passion, when you just know that you both get it. A key lesson learned, experience shared, same vision, same dream, same journey,  although few and far between they are gold dust.

Has this happened to you? If not, it can, it should, it will. Be ready, willing, and able.

Maybe you’re happier just being a passenger. If so that’s fine, it’s safe, it’s steady. But let’s face it driving the bus must be way more fun! Of course you need to learn to drive first, but eventually you may just end up being the driver, the instructor. A world of possibilities.

How do you get started

So here you are back in front of that mirror. Take a long hard look. Take your time. Be honest with your self. Do some research. See that vision. Embrace it. Now think what steps do I need to take?

We all absorb and process information in different ways. Lucky for us now with the internet. It does not have to be just books that are available to us. Research web sites. Books will always have a place as you research, make notes, line things out, keep notes. A note book  is a great constant companion for those thoughts and ideas, a point of reference. Now we also have e-books, all the information on the screen at your fingertips.

Highly recommend, insightful, informative. A must as a companion and guide on this journey.

So to action

Be informed, get organised, have an agenda. But make sure however challenging, it’s fun, it’s rewarding. How long will it take? How long is a piece of string? It’s up to you but once started don’t give up however frustrating it might be at times.

The key is be open to change. The path will twist, turn, and have dead ends. The unforeseen can and will happen. Being well equipped, remembering that vision, trusting in all that research are the foundations that you have laid for your future success. Surrounding yourself with the right support group, you cannot fail if you stay true to your self. Honestly evaluate progress, stay focused. Don’t be scared to step outside of your comfort zone, however uncomfortable it might be. It’s all part of the process, the journey.

Enjoy !!!  I know I do……………. Mike

Training education choices challenges:

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR regular postings of fresh new topic’s http://www.back2myroots.co.uk/          stage work semiar

With so many options and choices when it comes to training and updating skills  how do you decide where to get the best training the best value for money?

Is it through your distributor and in conjunction with one of the major professional companies?

Is it courses seminar’s

Saving to go see the odd platform artist.

Maybe you just don’t bother you know it all you know enough many stylist have this view done my training don’t need any more.

We should never stop learning and challenging our selves and their are so many avenues to explore not just your hands on skills

What direction would you like to see your career going in.

Platform work, Artistic team member, Technical educator, Salon owner, Teacher, maybe your passion is competition work, maybe something more down to earth successful and busy we all have different goals dreams aspirations.

avantgarde Up do work

What ever it is with help you we can only improve with help and sharing experience with each other

with so many products on the market offering new improved chemistry we must have the knowledge and understanding of them to decide if they are what we want do what we require.

In the economy the challenges of building up a successful clientele are more demanding we have to have a edge we have to be able to justify why what we offer what we do is much better that that home colour application we have to be able to explain why.

We have to have the people skills, the service skills, the consultation skills, the communication skills,

do you have all these are you at your best all the time?

When we see in the new’s for the most part people rate happiness as 5.4 that’s plain sad is your glass half full or half empty we are in the business of filling that glass of helping people feel and look better

can you do you do that?

team work show event

I have spent many years having lots of training my goal is to share that with others who would like to learn and share my experience both technical hands on, but also the personal the people skills the salon skills the things that make clients want to come back the things that make the salon run smoothly a great place to work create and have fun yes fun  hairdressing has to be fun!!

So often we get lost in just trying to busy you should not have to try! If you are on top of your game doing a great job being creative offering great service  you should not have to worry about that appointment book your client retention and so your pay packet.

Having the Skill the knowledge being up to date with products both for professional salon use and retail recommendation , Having an understanding of how over the counter colour works being able to explain this to clients all key to that success. having your NVQ qualification is a great start but it is not enough it’s a starting place a foundation from which to grow

Having a salon  but not staying current not inspiring your team will in the end lead to decent.thinking your busy enough and know everything is frankly dangerous and driven by ‘EGO ‘not a healthy place to be.

This is not a lecture just some honest sharing  some insight from many years in our ever changing ever challenging industry it is driven from wanting to share wanting to see the standards be high remain

high for us all to be professional creative and passionate about our work our profession what is a huge chunk of our lives.

Art of the up do.

Welcome to B2MR BACK2MYROOTS! I hope to create a platform that over time will become a place to share thoughts review hair colour and products.

I am pleased to let you know that i have started a professional hairdressing net working group through Linked in.

When I first started in the hair industry the thought of putting hair up being asked to do some ones hair for a graduation or wedding totally freaked me out.

The reason for this was fear! fear of screwing up fear of not knowing what i was doing looking an idiot.

I muddled my way through doing wedding hair but never feeling very confident it was not fun!

That was the way until I met and worked with a wonderful man and now dear friend.

Mr Jon Paul Holt owner of Avant-Garde artistic Studio Vancouver Canada winner of so many awards and accolades. I was fortunate enough to be a member of his Artistic team and learned so much from him. As he challenged me to work with him on photo shoots. and stage shows.

http://www.avantgardehair.com/

Jon paul taught me to enjoy playing with hair learn from handling it trying to create a look.

As a medium you can create so many styles and shapes. My dear friends from Vancouver  fab hair stylists Jon paul Holt, Ted Mc Kinnon outside Avant-garde Yale town Vancouver Canada. Weather looking for conventional look for a wedding or graduation one must have an idea of what the client wants but it’s also important to have a vision in your mind practice is key.

This series to the left and right were for a graduation a classic look pre coloured low lighted hair using a high lift Blonde on a natural level 4 base.

The low lights compliment the look by giving it texture and showing off the shape.

Building a shape likes this takes a little practice and patients but it’s well worth it.

[note: Using a high lift Blonde on dark hair will always give a very natural low light as it will only lift max of 4 levels depending on developer used. One should consider the pigment base of the Highlift shade ie ash beige violet ect!

A Slightly more Avantgarde look using

a few coloured hair  pieces.

Also using a medium to Sculpture a look to Create a hat look.

Slightly edgy but would work well for wedding or Graduation on some one with the confidence to carry it off.

Never force someone to wear a look that they are not comfortable with!

The key is practice and communication knowing that one has to play and get a feel for the hair and the clients needs and expectations. When playing their is no such thing as failure it’s more a case of taking a journey of discovery a firm foundation to build from.

As stated hair colour can also play a key roll to show off a look give it texture and dimension.

By play and practice you can find the look that works with the hair and suites your client soft and low high with softness so much choice.

Have the confidence to step out side your comfort zone but don’t be made to feel uncomfortable when working with a client for a big event or occasion if their is a difference of opinion of a personality clash my advise would be suggest that you part agreeing to differ if is to short and weddings and big formal events expectation run high who needs that stress!

Unless they are modeling for you for a show or photo Shoot then well it’s your call. enjoy have fun challenge your self.
