The hair salon the industry what do they mean to you?

                What is a hair dressing salon?:

Is it just a place to do business? Is it a hub a hive of activity? A place where like minded talented stylist get together to share there talents to gain and share experience. A place to train and be trained! A place to work your craft build a reputation be a success. It is so much more consider for a client. It’s a place of relaxation. A place to socialise palace to trust, in many cases as stylist we can and do build strong bonds of trust even friendships with our clients.
For a salon to succeed be a successful Business so many factors have to come together.

Many things to consider Location a key component. Image the very essence of the business. Goals. Vision. Staff. Products. Marketing. Innovative thinking collaboration. All of theses are key component’s for success is any one more important than another:

A point for discussion what do you think? For me it’s the team. Management and all the staff.

The Team:                    

Here is an example on the above. Who owns the salon? Who are Staff hard to tell. they all look equal they are a real team.I’m sure they have structure and mutual respect. But it’s not a dictatorship it’s not a salon class system.

I have been writing quite a few of these Blogs mainly for me a way to share and reflect, I do it seems come back to the same key themes.

Education. Knowledge. Honesty and Service. creative thinking open discussion. Personal development openness to learn. To embrace criticism and valuable feed work,collaborate be a team player . We should never stop learning or wanting too! Never think we know it all! { us hairdressers have big ego’s and it can get in the way}  Success and learning and service if you don’t like people don’t like communicating why be a hairdresser! Being honest with your self about who you are being honest with your clients really important if you want to succeed.

I read a recent article

One person had written in raising a question about his partners in a salon being more interested in platform work self promotion than being committed to the business:

Having worked for a number of years as both an educator and platform Artist I know how much fun it can be. The rush of walking out on a stage introducing yourself your models you have and own the stage your centre of attention.

                                                       {For that brief moment}

Being an educator and platform artist can help you promote both your self and your business. This should be the reason for doing it! Yes to further your career to gain knowledge to share but don’t get sucked into thinking your really that special. Dangerous it’s not fame it’s fore filling that inner need to a platform to show off the most important things is to learn and share help develop the salon your teammates. Encourage personal development of all skills both hands on technical but also personal growth.

The big Colour Companies need us to sell promote educate their products. At the end of the the day your Salon should be your priority why? It’s yours to build to grow without the constrains dictated to you when representing a large corporate concern. Use the education experience you gain to share with your staff use your skills knowledge on your clients use the fact that you are an industry expert to your advantage. support your juniors your trainees.

Another interesting topic stylist with poor client retention key to business a stylist who is unable to build a client base is questionable. A stylist who gets no returns or recommendations from clients the salon gives them is costing the business money.

This is time for open honest discussion with owner manager staff member: Time for honesty and truth ask the key question why do you think we are in this situation. make them take responsibility set out a plan together to improve set out a time frame for change set a date for review.
Communication is key having said that the individual has to take responsibility for their actions or lack their of, suggest in salon training nights a time to share thoughts idea’s courses education, maybe a course in service handling clients, a little attitude adjustment. Finally as an owner i would set a dead line for giving them clients, suggesting that after an agreed period a new stylist is being brought in and it will be their turn to be promoted. Harsh maybe but it’s but it’s how to move your business forward.

Choose the best products you can stay on top of new products: be informed question everything!

As new Colour lines come out try them have in salon training and Demo days.

Educate your self and your staff on the products you use then you can  share and educate your clients.
Have staff get to gather open debate creative discussion nights collaborate ion idea’s

Clients love know that your a true professional share you knowledge that Consultation your time to shine.

Encourage personal growth and education. stay on top of new products have in salon education events strive to be the best have the best reputation this will create a place people will want to work in clients will want to be a part of. I hope that this article will be of interest to both stylist owners managers educators and platform artist’s we are all part of a team.

Coloured with Red Copper tone her natural hair level is a 6 dark Blonde.

Colour used was for deposit only when going tone on tone unless we want to bring the clients own pigment out lift is not required.

Using say 10 vol may have made this even brighter but would create roots issues down the road. This up do was created to get as much height as possible without it falling down or over. In this instance two scouring pads were used like doughnuts on top of each other some hair pulled through the hole in the middle this creates the cascading hair from the top the rest is wrapped around allowing free fall providing texture and movement. Finally from the front view a very loose sexy look  with lots of height but still keeping lots of softness

As the hair falls down. Putting hair up in this manner with a firm base as a structure will not fall down.

challenges and change in the hair industry .

              Is there need for change in our industry? 

                                  ‘If so’

                How can this change happen?

Sadly although it can happen by itself when this happens it’s not normally good and positive change. It’s a change that happens slowly over time normally caused by neglect and complacency.

Rather than point out areas that need to change or be addressed i think it better to look at the big picture and how positive on going change can and will impact our industry. Not every one is open to change some might even be dead against it but it happens with or without some guidance and direction when this happens it can become quiet chaotic and seem very random and uncoordinated.

The hair industry has so many facets that it becomes quite hard to think about it as a whole I think of it more as many smaller units that are all linked under one umbrella ‘our industry’.

From Salon ownership.To Distributor.To Manufacturing. These might be considered the three main arms with other avenues leading off and yet connected within the industry.

This might be Stylists. Training education. Product knowledge. Product education. Platform work Product promotion. This would then break down again into others area. Colleges.Academy. Salon training. Product educator Sales person. Artistic team member and so on. Many avenues to many to split them up.

What has changed over the years? Certainly government involvement in standards and levels of training by the setting up of training standard bodies creating over legislation has this been for the better good of the industry? For both the standards and indeed for the types attracted into the profession? Are the right people steering controlling and setting mandates for our industry?

The number of colleges and academy’s. The standards they teach  the number of students they produce qualified each year. Is it now just a business and  way to control unemployment numbers? Should they work more closely with the industry at grass roots levels the salon and business owner the end consumer of the trainee’s.The industry expected to employ these constantly growing number of newly qualified professionals.

Manufacturers the products they produce, they way they market them. Do they respect our industry or dictate to it? Should they be more transparent about the products they expect us to use and promote. The salon business. Is on longer seasonal. The demands from stylist are different. The way we can connect with our clients is different. what clients demand is constantly changing. The age of expected discounting is consuming many salon and spa owners.

I do not have al the answers to the points raised but i do know that over the years we have allowed these changes to influence our industry. These changes some good some not so good now effect and influence our profession greatly. Judging by the number of industry professional voicing opinion globally on various professional group forums the need and want for change is growing. Build up a Linkedin professional profile join a some groups become active.One such group ‘professional hairdresser knowledge networking group’

There are many passionate motivated professional who work tirelessly to try and raise awareness and have a voice. Every salon every spa has the power to make change happen. How. By starting in your own salon with staff and owner collaboration with innovative thinking. By taking action start to think about and discuss the things your ant to change have a vision and work towards it salon owners stop competing with each other by our discounting each other you are hurting your selves some time competition is not healthy it’s distractive and negative.

Start in salon training develop your team have high standards start hold the manufactures accountable for the products they expect us to use. Join discussion groups share your voice have opinion.When things are not acceptable say so communicate openly with staff. learn and understand how to use social net working and multi media to your advantage. Encourage personal development as well as salon and team development. Take back control of your business and so a little bit of our industry by being educated skilled and professional. Being informed having knowledge is power having opinion and sharing views is powerful.

Finally the internet and the information available we cannot trust everything that is posted to be totally true we owe it to our sleeves and those we work with or influence to do a great deal of research to make sure the facts that we are presented with are correct. To be willing and open for change and challenges to embrace all the new possibilities available to us.

The internet is a marketing tool as well as an information high way so we have to all learn to navigate it and stay current and up to date!

I hope that this starts up some discussion and gives me some feed back.

Respect trust vision. In the salon/Spa

 Respect Trust vision: “RTV”

Respect:

Do you respect your staff ? Do they respect you? Without respect it can be so very hard if not impossible to have a salon running smoothly without and hitches or staffing issues. How does one gain and retain respect in the work place? First and foremost it’s a two way street other wise known as mutual respect.  How does it work? It’s earned over time by actions, commitment, sharing of a vision. Making positive change happen. Being inspirational to those around you. Being a leader. Being a listener . None of this happens over night it takes time to develop. It can not be brought and yet it is invaluable. Respect encourages those around you to listen and or take action to embrace change. Lack of respect can and is very disruptive it creates many issues especially in a leadership or management situation. Once lost it’s very hard to regain.

In the salon or spa environment respect for each other open communication collaboration will enable the salon to function without distraction, without the disfunction that can be created when respect is lost and chaos per sues. In one of many forms from staffing issues and poor management decisions general morale. An openness with regard to salon /spa running and the big picture a sharing of a vision a willingness to listen and on occasion make changes is all part of being respected being a leader you also must give respect to those around you. Ultimately this contributes to better salon management a better working environment and so creating an atmosphere that works to the benefit of all concerned. Clients can and do pick up on this.

 Trust: 

Closely and many might say running side by side with respect is ‘Trust’ this we build. Without trust it’s really is very hard to function and get anything done. To not be trusted or have trust in some one or some thing creates negativity it will slowly bring you or your business down. If this is an issue you really do need to spend some time think it through. If it’s a person a team mate employee ask the question. Why? Don’t you trust them. Can it be addressed is it a situation that can be fixed. If not before making that tuff decisions seek advise from those around you, those you respect ! If it’s a thing then it’s much easier however good it might be if it’s not working for you and you cannot get past trusting it get rid of it! Don’t waste time and energy on things that don’t warrant it.

Without Trust in a salon between every member of the team decent can rapidly creep in negative energy can be and is so distractive. If this is the case council those team members work mates managers that you respect and make decisions on how to address and deal with any situation that might arise. Don’t be hasty consider the situation what created it. Decide on an informed course of action.

 Vision:

Finally that vision this is yours. In this case it’s of your business but it can relate to any aspect of your life for each and very one should have a vision. In this instance we are relating it to work. Once you have clear vision share it with those around you. Those you Respect and trust make sure they share this vision with you so that you are all working toward the same goal.

By sharing your vision with team members you are not only sharing your vision for the future you are also showing that you respect and trust them. There is a synergy between the three words. That synergy comes to fruition when put into action. When action starts to happen, things start to change, they start to progress. As this happens embark on constructive dialogue with team mates and staff members collaborate encourage  new thoughts and ideas innovative idea’s that might help your vision become a reality for all those sharing it with you.

The look the challenge the journey all working together to make it happen and share in the success. Having a vision a goal is what motivates and drives us sharing a vision with others helps it become a reality.

Have the right team wanting and willing to share your vision respecting your commitment trusting you to share thoughts views opinions trust a willingness to listen and collaborate.

Salon support staff.Young workers your trainee’s apprentices.

The salon would not function without assistance without that team who work so hard to support the stylist from. Shampooing to mixing hair dye or colour to sweeping the floor. making coffee helping clients.

Working behind the scene to maintain.

Every salon has and needs these the young enthusiastic trainee and assistants often underpaid over worked and in some case taken advantage of. Not every assistant is training or doing an apprenticeship. For some the role they have is just to keep the salon running support the stylist and team. They work relentlessly shampooing, doing towels,washing and drying. sweeping, making coffee, filling up and replacing products.

They are the unsung heroes in the salon. Often taken for gratitude sometimes ignored. A salon could not work with out them. Stylist and salon owners should not treat these young people or indeed ask or expect them to do anything they would not be willing to do themselves. Respect  your fellow work mates team members. Never forget we were once just like them! did you ever resent a stylist? I did.

In many cases it’s the apprentice that is used for these roles doing many of the salon support chores. This can only be acceptable if the salon has in place a proper structured training programs of both in salon training, model nights and day release for college to attain the necessary level of qualification. Sadly in to many cases young trainee’s and brought into the salon paid minimum wage promised a good training that never materialises.

Both salon owners and indeed stylists who benefit for all the help and support these young people give.  You owe it to them to give time to make sure that get full and proper training. You should embrace this it can be so rewarding don’t look at it as chore  think of it as a challenge with huge rewards. Remember the day will come when you will need some help or wish the trainee was better trained!  Any stylist however busy cannot expect to use these these young trainees and not give back of their time and knowledge, skill to not mentor and train will only lead to the apprentice trainee getting disillusioned  and eventually leaving. the drop out rate in out industry is so high.

We all need to think back to our own journey and training was it a good experience? What would you like to have had more of? Make your apprentices experience better! This raises standards and encourage them to carry this on into their career. Think about the many aspects and skills one has to learn! As an owner be part of this encourage it. lead by example.

We can all make a difference sharing and giving off ourselves and our time is one such way.What is the point of having skill and knowledge and not sharing it? Look for the best in these young people an help them to develop into amazing creative salon team members. Also make them accountable for their actions and attitude for this is a two way street of giving sharing mutual respect commitment and trust.

Invest in your team and your salon will flourish. Collaborate, encourage creativity, investing both time and money into training is investing in your business now and in the future to abuse and neglect staff training issues is to fail in the long run it’s leads to decent and can be very disruptive to business.

Invest your time get to know these young trainee’s and apprentices share with then your communication skills your people skills your passion. What you will get back is far more support loyalty trust respect. In the salon and in life we have to unconditionally give out to get back sharing mentoring those skills that wisdom and knowledge are no different. Support your trainee’s and apprentices. Invest in your self by investing time in others!

Challenging times in the hair salon.

These days knowing how to cut hair. Colour or dye hair is not enough to succeed!

The hair salon for so long classed as a safe little to no risk business. Everyone will always need a haircut. low overheads and good profit margins. But not any more to owning a salon, being good with people being a good all rounder is not enough. These are challenging times and more and more we hear about struggles. We hear stylist and owners questioning what used to work does not any more. Clients have the ability to look for the best deals and discounts.This questions customer loyalty and client retention. Stylist want more than just a basic wage.Young stylist leave college with such high wage expectation newly qualified they think they know everything and world is their oyster!!!!

Product’s many have improved some are misleading and dangerous. As professional we have to make and hold some of the manufactures to account. They have to be more transparent about product content and any possible health implications. Insurance, liability, health safety. tax, licenses. Is it all worth it?

The global shift  in economies has touched every one for many created fear and a longing for the good old days. I feel that although things are tuff and everyone is sailing in unchartered waters, the true professionals the ones who can embrace change will come through these hard time stronger and better equipped for the future. Change is scary but it’s also positive. Innovative thinking staff collaboration, creativity. These are the future.

These  standards and etching have to start at grass roots in the college and academy with the young apprentice encourage that wanting to question and lean that need for answers. That passion this will only come when standards are raised by those running and teaching in these institutions. The future is training up the stylists of tomorrow and making sure they have product awareness and are ready to question and demand answers. Salons teams have to be on the right and the same tracks to succeed.

Salon owners have to realise that discounting is very short sighted it’s a game when salons in any area start the discount game all business suffers. Service, skill, creativity, honest, communication, value for money these are the keys to success. Having a strong and focused team all working together. Work together share the rewards together.  

Working on line has taught me just how many industry passionate motivated professionals there are who really try to make a difference. Who are willing to share their views experience and opinions.To reach out and support others. Raise questions ,look deeper than the surface

How ever tuff things are for you and your business it will get better it can better. Reach out for help an support think out side the box. Challenges are how we grow and get stronger we are in the business after all of solving problems and correcting wrongs!

We have to embrace this changing world and all the issues that we face in our business. We have to communicate and net work We have to seek out others to share views with ask for professional help .Most importantly remember why you came into this industry what was your vision? Has it changed? Does it need to change? Change and the challenges it presents  are positive.

Hairstylists our career our vision our journey or?

How did we get into hairdressing? What drew you to it as a career? Was it a calling your true vocation? Are some of us really doing what we have known we always would do. Is it our destiny!

How often as stylist do we take the time to look in the mirror?  Do a personal inventory on ourselves. This is the time to honestly reflect on where we are at. Where we want to get to. Are we reaching our full potential? Are we challenging ourselves are we growing? Are we offering the best service possible? Do we need a refresher a little update maybe learn or improve on a skill or technique, maybe a course in management and or staff relations. Maybe your involved in education and training. How current are your skills? Are you in touch with the industry and all the changes that happen at grass roots level? In the salon on the high street?

Hairdressing has changed so much over the years and i would say for the most part these changes have been good and very warranted. From training to health and safety issues. The way a salon or spa is run and the  services it offers. The hours of business. the certification the qualification all changed. We no longer have those seasonal high, That pre Christmas frenzy,Of course it’s still busy but not the way it might have been in the 80’s or 90’s.

Products available to us have changed we have so much more choice. With these choices comes the need for. Education and vigilance and knowledge. We have to ask questions to get the answers.The only silly question is the one that is never asked!

Tools techniques constantly change and so must we. Staying in the safety of zone of what we know never pushing the envelope can and will lead to stagnation boredom! we need to communicate with our work and team mates share visions with owners and managers, be innovative have and share creative thoughts we all benefit from this type of thinking and collaboration.

 We all need to remind our selves from time to time of our dreams our goals. What was it we really wanted to do?  What were the heights we wanted to reach? All easy to forget pushed to the side as other things come into our lives and take president. As we settle for easy street. we stop questioning we stop challenging our selves an those around us.The skills we have to have for success in our industry are many and constantly need up dating to maintain our profession integrity and image.

We are in the service industry first and foremost make no mistake about this one. Service. our communication skills. Our listening skills. Our attention to detail. How we project and represent our selves. Honesty. with humility. Style all key assets to success.

Skills: Product knowledge. Hands on techniques .Creative vision. Innovative Thinking.

All of these skills and talents are a part of who we are! What we do! From time to time we forget, that to stay at the top of our game we need to invest in our selves. To have closer look at what we want an then decide on what we need to do to make change happen. We are in the business of solving problems are we not?

A little self maintenance:

*Are we offering the highest standard of service possible?

*Are we getting a little complacent? {it takes a big person to say yes!}

*Are our skills up to date?

*How is our product knowledge!

*Is it time to seek a little professional help.

We are all stronger together. We all benefit from sharing. From taking the same journey!

Maybe a colour refresher class. Maybe learn a new razor cutting technique. Want to improve on those up do looks. Maybe just talk about ways to improve the salon day to day running the client experience sales!

The Changing face of the hair industry. Can you keep up? Are you ready and on the ball?

Owning a salon. Working in a salon being a part of a team. Maybe your renting a chair in a salon have your own business?  Maybe your a small freelancer working from a home salon business. A mobile stylist. 

All of these are totally respectable avenues to explore within out industry. Over the past years thing have changed hugely. economic challenges the way business is carried out. Seasonal trends. The demands on salon owners and stylist to produce. We have responsibility to our selves our work mates our clients to have a full understanding of all matters relating to health and safety. The legislation governing the safe use and indeed disposal of products keep up to date books and records having qualification, certification and licenses.

On top of this new products . New chemistry . New claim’s are they safe ? We have a duty to find out! New techniques, the challenges of running owning managing a business managing people if quite a lot to deal with.  How do you? Then there is finding time to reflect on. The direction you and your business are going in. Remembering why your in business, what was your vision? What is your goal? The service you offer the standard of work being done. What ever your business model. How often do you take the time to reflect on any of these topic’s in an honest reflective manner?  Do you take the time to discuss new idea’s and ways forward with your staff? do you encourage innovative thinking collaboration creative thinking.

Keeping up with education in our chosen field is so important. Education creates excitement because there is always something new to learn. lose the passion lose the drive. become less motivated. Education keeps you connected product knowledge is a must nowadays. Clients want to know that the ingredients and formulations are safe and what we recommending for them to use will work and be value for money. We as stylist need to know cause effect understand what we are using and why.We have to question not knowing is not a satisfactory  excuse for error!

rofessional groups and bodies always good to be apart of Linked In is a great place to share and build a business profile.

We have to be aware and have an understanding of changes in the law and regulations pertaining to our profession Now I’m curious to learn more so. I’m not putting anyone (client, work mates and myself) in danger. Just because one is certified in a new technique it does not mean we have the full picture and trust what we are told as truth set in stone! 

Law’s and regulation are in constant change the information we are given on products how they work and indeed the effects that that can cause are not always clear but the burden to ask the right questions is on us their are no excuses for not knowing or understanding.With a little time and patient we can research products read reviews get full insight into the good and bad what works and maybe what does not the more we as stylist share net work and connect the stronger we become its part of giving back sharing your experience strengths. It is my personal belief that if we know something but don’t share it pass it on then it’s a total waste!

I try to share to promote and sometimes pass on warnings . I try to communicate with others in our industry and to this ends in the space of 6 months an now net working all over the world with other like minded people in our industry. At the end of the day it’s up to you what do you want are you prepared to make the changes needed to stay in the now? Its your journey your adventure!

A topic has arisen that is a follow on from my earlier posting ownership management chair rental. It’s how we look at salary commission based earning or Chair rental. What is a fair rate? What is a fair way to compensate salon owner and stylist ? Without causing decent  or work place break down creating unwanted issues. For the most part stylists after training will move around a few times trying to find a fit a work place that allows them to build up a good client base a place they can earn what they see is a good wage.

In many cases as time goes bye and experience is gained and our stylist starts to get busier bring in more money to the salon. As this happens resentment can set in with regard to ratio of pay to turnover. How can this be prevented? What are the signs of an unhappy Staff! In many cases the staff room gossip signs of apathy lateness. Work standard dropping standard of service suffering.

Most stylist will think about and see things that exist within their work bubble a simple world of I do my clients. They pay X at the end of the day i have brought in X and sold Y yet my take home pay is only 1/2 an X and that’s before i pay Tax, I do all the work it’s not fair my boss should get so much after all what do they do!!

How does or how can commission work?

Commission can be mixture of guaranteed basic and commission targets as a productivity incentive or just commission. What is fair? Well of course as we get busier more established build our client base we can earn more on a regular bases but the thresholds will always be  how many clients can we do how much do we charge whilst maintaining standards and service! It is a natural progression for stylist to look to get a bigger cut of the pie choices start your own business not easier or look at chair rental.

This gets interesting chair rental was when it first came out was quite visionary a stylist pays to rent a chair a space pays X per month and runs a small business within a business. Of course the down side is having to pay that rent whether you are busy or not! having to keep books pay your own tax. stock appointments you are your own little self employed Business. As an evolution of this a new chair rental business scenario has come to my attention.

A stylist rents a chair for a monthly fixed fee but also pays a percentage of their take to the salon owner. Hum! for this the owner provides salon reception sales support motivation marketing skills sounds good its seem’s to be a blend between commission based and self employed. But lets look at this with some bogus numbers.

Lets say our stylist is busy and turns over £1000.00 per week

£1000.00 x 4 = £ 4000.00 Month 50% commission  stylist earns £2000.00pre tax

Now lets look at chair rental 

£1000.00 x4 = £ 4000.00 lets say chair rental £800.00 month  stylist take £3200.00 out of this they have to pay all expenses and Tax, insurance, stock assistance, everything. but the larger take is appealing.

Now chair rental and commission split

£1000.00 x4 = £ 4000.00  then chair rental £ 800.00 month share of commission 50% 50% splits so our £ 4000.00 a month less £800.00 = £ 3200.00 divided x 2 = £1600.00

This would be £1600.00 for the stylist. £ 2400.00 salon owner.

Although the stylist our first example left the salon that was paying commission for a better deal more control a bigger piece of the pie. The down side is booking keeping paying tax keeping accounts. From a Stylist point of view strait chair rental is the best deal but involves a lot more work and commitment from a stylist it’s time to grow up and take responsibility for your self your actions.The example that seems to offer the worst deal from a stylist point of view is rental and turnover split! For this to work the split has to be less on the turnover  to make it as appealing as just chair rental the split would have to be Rent + 25% take fro the salon owner.

By nature Stylist will always want to move on find a place where they feel they are making a fair wage for there skill,  they will always feel they are working making money for the boss or owner it’s natural not always realistic given the costs of doing business. In closing I think it is because of the above options many choose to become home based or mobile stylist.

I do however think that there is a fair balance that affords both salon owners and stylist  away of coming together to work and create a successful business that provides for all the key is communication honesty, discussing goals oh and not being greedy yep being fair you need each other .I hope this is helpful to all those trying to work out a career or business Move. None of the above take into account charging VAT and keeping records and paying revenue for this said Tax. you are in essence a tax collector this Money should be put to one side.
