Hair salon influences and change

From: The salon to manufacturing from manufacturing to education skill training, personal development. Career path and challenges.

Educator, artistic team member, platform artist, salon owner, manager, freelance/chair or booth renter. distributor or sales representative.

Change happens it’s constant from the products that are available to us. This new must have technology  we have to have. However we also need to question how and why they work understand any side effects Are they safe ! We must be educated on these products feel confident they are safe for us and our clients.

What dives the invention and investment into research of new product technology? Is it sales and profit yes of course. First and foremost it’s driven by Media demand from promotion and advertising. Now with the internet with the tablet with the android more than ever, clients can see it see instantly the results see the look they are hooked they want it!

Of course it’s our job to deliver but it’s also our professional duty to be the moral compass. We have to have the knowledge and the skill to inform advise and educate our clients on the products it’s pro’s and con’s for there will always be both!

Influences.

This economy this global shift has been a wake up call to any one in business and we in the hair industry are not and have not been immune to this. The seasonal spikes that we could rely on no longer exist that Christmas rush that spring make over that pre holiday do!

Staying in touch with discussion groups and forums shows me that many salons are struggling, many are looking for a way to turn things around. Many are relying to discounting, some are taking short cuts maybe compromising on product quality. Just treading water trying to survive.

We all need to take a deep breath evaluate where we are what we want. Re visits those goals that vision and re focus. We have to embrace new technology. We have to collaborate more with staff or team members. Learn to use the power of the media social net works collaborate with staff to promote the salon it’s services in a positive way.

Be strong enough to seek out professional help and advise. Maybe we need to think of this shift as a new beginning, a time for reinvention, a time to revaluate and start with over with a new rekindled energy and out look, Change and indeed challenges can and do seem so daunting because it forces us to look at things in different light encourages us to think out the the box.

We can all make difference in so many ways. Start with that vision build your team have an ongoing in house training program. Develop your team have apprentices train then share your skills investing them they are the future become the teachers develop your an their future, use the colleges for the theory for you trainees to get certified work with the colleges and collaborate on training for they certainly don’t have all the answers they need also to adapt to the industry changes and salon demands.

Work to develop these young enthusiastic creative stylists grow with them, grow develop and learn together.

Products source what works for you both for salon use and retail don’t carry to much stock. Address the skills and passions of each and every salon member, encourage courses and extra training both in salon and external. work with your manufacturer and supplier on education up date and in houses training events. . The salon as a whole has to have the highest standards of training and expertise, individually encourage  specialisation become unique a destination location a place of excellence in even field. The palace that is talked about a place that people want to be associated with. Community involvement, be it linked to the gym healthy centre or supporting local events collaboration innovative thinking.

How do we get beyond thinking of ‘clients as one time walk in’s’ and consider them as long term potentials?

When will we start to consider all those clients who ‘come once never to return’ ! Those lost opportunities to make a first and last impression. When will we take the time to think. ‘In fixing someone else’s mistakes’ will it could it cost me potential ‘Clients’. Part of this new thinking is. ‘We are in the service industry’. ‘We are not in the server industry’. Professional boundaries and mutual respect must exist. The client is not always right neither are we balance and being open to change and the unexpected and dealing with and addressing issues solving problems.

That first impression the personal image we present. How we communicate and articulate our suggestions the art of listening. Being a professional in your field of expertise thus giving sound advise. Executing and delivering the service advise in highly skilled professional way with the highest expertise and skill offering a wonderful experience. Charging for your time and expertise. No discounting. No little bit off at the cash register. Being paid for a job well done. This is what a client expects and wants nothing more nothing less. Discounting could suggest that ‘you did not do your job as well as you could have’. ‘It will be better next time’. ‘Thank you for letting me try’. ‘Sorry i could have tried harder’. Do any of these a good message? a message of professional confidence and assertiveness.

Yes things have changed they will continue to change to challenge us so we have to learn to embrace adapt and be ready so that we can keep up with the every changing demands and wants that our industry dictates as it grows and developed. We all have the strength to do this .We can also connect with other professional share experience seek advise offer advise competition is not always a good thing  it can become so distractive and negative both within the salon and  if competing with business around you. Discounting is competition sadly it’s not he who gives the biggest discount who wins.

We all have new technology new products new tools. Constantly changing techniques and demands to sill levels. We have an industry in a state of flux. We have change and challenges to face. We have social media devices and we all have to embrace all the changes and the challenges they pose. Exciting times is the only way to look at it.

In the Hair salon. Dress code or self expression?

As a follow on to team building education up dates and product knowledge classes. I though I would touch on what can be quite a contentious subject. As a salon owner should you weld the big stick and dictate uniform or dress code. What are it’s advantages. What does it do for morale? Does it suggest a more professional approach? Does it create salon image and identity. We are all different in how we work and so will settle or comply with different rules and regulations.

Many stylist will say they think that dress code are a good thing. Many salon owners insist on it with an attitude of. ‘My sand box my rules’ Rather draconian I think!  It could be seen as controlling. For uniforms to work it has to have the consent of all staff ! A collaboration. Who pay’s for or supplies the uniform, what happens when they get stained and worn? Maybe not uniform  but an instance of a stipulated dress code. How does that work for you? Having owned a couple of salons and having tried both uniforms for trainee’s and suggested dress code for stylist’s it is my view that it’s quite restrictive and rather out dated to dictate dress but guide lines are quite acceptable.

Here are some thoughts:

Are we not in the fashion business? Creative, innovative, free thinking professionals? Some times temperamental. But is that not part of being artistic and creative.  Is not how we dress a projection of who we are and what we do what we represent ? I also think that every salon owner has the right as we all do to a vision, but if that vision impacts on others they either have to be willing to accept this or as an owner you have to be willing to bend. Compromise. Can some sort of code be in place for example’ No jeans’ Sets a tone but leaves room for artistic license and dress sense. Or for example ‘No flesh’

As professionals.

As mature responsible people should we not know that we are, what we project. How we look Say’s. Who we are. What we do. It says. This is me. How can i help you? Trainee’s in college or apprentice’s often get to wear a uniform. It’s thought that it teaches self respect and the importance of professional image. If this is the case completion of training should be the coming of age and taking back of the responsibility of appearance and self expression and marketing the product that is you that is us!! For me when training as an apprentice being given the Leonard’s T-shirt with the big brown L logo on the front was an honour you were part of an elite few being taken on as an apprentice at what was one of London’s best salon’s and places ot train!

Should dress code not be.

The standard suggested might be. Dress professionally. Dress to impress. After all we are the product. Represent your self.  Take control of your appearance remember we are the product! I think that salon owners should encourage stylists to take responsibility for themselves in all aspects of their life. Appearance, attitude, commitment. If they don’t want to comply. Then of course like  everything in life make a decision live with the consequences. Or if you cannot be bothered stay home! most importantly. Salon harmony professional and welcoming.

Where does this thinking come from.

Experience yes, just an opinion yes. But I beleive that as salon owner we  provide an environment for creativity to flourish . In life we can lead by example. We provide the tools the backing and support for out stylists to  flourish and succeed. Looking unprofessional. Being unprofessional. Taking short cuts leads to losing clients. This will all follow why because all these flaws suggest lack of self-respect and lack of respect for both the salon and ones work mates.I don’t think a return to the shot below is called for !!!!!

Choice consequences choices made or inaction will cause reaction for that is the way the universe works. The re action will be failure to succeed. The salon is the theatre we are the players we should aim to be the star’s of the play that is a day in the salon.

Hair cuts techniques styles


Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR regular postings of fresh new topic’s

Following in the steps of our make over article some food for thought

A place to share thoughts: review hair colour, products and techniques.

I’m often asked how many different hair cuts are there ? My first thought was thousands but then if one really thinks about it well it’s quite an interesting thought process.

We need to think this through a little!

Long.             Anything past shoulder blades

Medium.        Shoulder blades up to nape or chin length

Short.            Anything above this.

Remember this is my thought process into the question asked not a definitive way of assessing or going about cutting or assessment of length or look, just sharing thoughts views on the process! My thought went to layers why layers. well at the end of the day if not all one length then layers to some degree or another make form the shape. It could be argued that layers are required for a perfect on length look for that wonderful swing and movement!

We must not forget techniques, slide cutting, castle thinning shear, razor Cutting, and the many other tools we have at out disposal but these are techniques if you like artistic license, freestyle cutting.The basic’s don’t change the length and degree of layering.Shape form, weight distribution. This sounds to simplistic all hair cuts are length and shape created by degree’s of layering. Simple it’s not because with this description we have to consider the real part creative talent, skill training. Any hair cut however basic or however complicated is a mixture and blend of above techniques.

What is a hair cut:

A hair cut is weight distribution it is having understanding of when cutting hair off where it will fall and lie how it will contribute to the final shape. It is being able to see and imagine shape. Someone once said a great hairdresser should see a shape in 3D know how it will look, I think this a perfect analogy.

A great hair cut is a blend of the degree of laying but having a full understanding of weight distribution and a vision to see shape.

The key is that consultation. On length and shape but also first and foremost to understand that if you put a weight line in with your fist cut it will dictate the whole cut it can make the difference between good bad average or just not good.

What ever we are doing creating has to start with a foundation. If you do this a weight line can be moved as a shape forms if you commit to it off the bat by dictating from the crown you have know room for change maybe that odd growth pattern double crown all things that can cause issue!

It can also be said that one length really is only when cut to 1/8th of an inch all over and left to grow but this would only be true as it grows out if you turned the person up side down. but then we are back into weight distribution why because you cannot cut a straight line on a curved surface and given the shape of the head we have thousands of curves and angles to play with hence understanding weight distribution.

I think that angles on the head could be by think about a fan placing on the crown open it up  many angles now place on crown different direction again many angles how to they the work together? These two shots above and below highlight perfectly bad hair i really don’t know whats worse 1/ That maybe the lady likes this look? Or 2/ slightly worse that she paid for it and a professional thought this acceptable. It’s really bad

As an exercise try this:

Stand behind your client take a section across the crown about 3inches wide comb it straight up now look below your fingers at the section the distance from the crown to your fingers is less in the middle than the distance on the out side of section, why because of the curve of the scalp so it follows that it will be be straight when it falls. Now take that same section and lean it to the left as you do this the hair from the right and into  middle of the section will fall away carry on with the hair traveling to the left of the section the further you go the more will fall away. This is weight distribution!

The hair cut is a hair creation. A style. A look. A fashion setting trend. A statement of individuality. If all of these are the case. Why as stylist do we in so many cases stick in so many cases to cutting the same look on everyone? Without any thought to some very basic points or stick to the safe options on the styles we can create. Will is suite this Client? Do they have the right hair type and features? Can they carry it off?

As stylists we owe it to both ourselves and our customers Clients to advise in an honest way on what might work be suitable look good, If we don’t do this are we really doing our job to it’s fullest are we being real professional are we being honest?

I ask these questions of my self constantly do you? We live in a society that for the most part is very accepting and tolerant of most things, People come in all shapes sizes have different needs desires aspirations all good but we as hair stylist have to take a lead and advise honestly what looks good what will not work.

When thinking about shape texture a look should we not consider the type of hair fine, thick, curly, growth patters at the nape of the neck to the hair line will that fringe {Bang }work for this client and her life style? If i cut this harsh blunt line at the nape will the hair lie the way i want it to? or will it always look lop sided? will that fringe work can i over layer ? yes you can should i add texture? questions to ask your self!

Should i cut a harsh line maybe it should be softer! Why do you see so many men with lop sided cuts? Answer no account was taken for the way the hair grows! just because you combed it flat against his neck cut a perfect strait line does not mean it will lie this way!

At this juncture you may be laughing or thinking this is not me maybe not if so great you are one of the few. I think the fault with these issues lies in training or lack their of! to little time spent on the basic points key to understanding how to build and create a great cut!

Shape  for Example:

when will we stop re vamping the Bob with the chewed up wings the spaniel look! every look has it day but this one is done and oh so dusted, half the women wearing it should not be! In some cases the lines created are just wrong a heavy women with a thick set does not need a strong blunt line emphasising no neck round shoulders. Think about this really fine hair textured within an inch of its life for that shattered edgy look around the chin will it does it work?

The same can be said for cutting this shape into wavy curly hair the line will not hold in the nape area and the length left again around the chin line will curl up looking like to Brillo pads, yes it looks great when she leaves the salon you have hot ironed it with an inch of it’s life, guess what it’s raining it’s Grey it’s damp what it’s going to look like?

We need to consider these things as professional is a bad look a good representation of out skill and ability will it get us recommendation will it get us client retention? It’s all about honest it’s all about that consultation it’s all about your standard your skill your passion your ability.

My question is. Can you be honest does any of this apply to you? We are none of us perfect but we have to question our choices. We have to raise the bar we have to have skill, passion and a real desire to make a difference! DO YOU!

These shots are of a young mum to be. She was heavily pregnant hated how she looked and felt. She came into the salon I was working at her words were. I have been to three salons today I want all my hair off  a total change. No one will do it they look at me like a crazy pregnant women.  I smiled said i will. she said really. As you can see the rest is history! next day she gave birth . She called me three days later to thank me.

Cutting and electric clippers.


Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR: regular postings of fresh new topic’s

When we think about the electric clipper what comes to mind? man’s hair cut tidy up the neck line ?

We have to think beyond that another tool in our box ! another skill in our skills box!

When we think Electric clippers most of us think head shave to some degree and numbered guards. Who make the best clippers.well many different brands but Wahl and Oyster make the  best without a doubt.  I have to say i do like the clippers that are air cooled.

The shot below with the huge Blonde main was cut on stage just using clippers. In-fact the Oyster ones above. Having taken the model on stage with one length hair that was added as extensions prior to going on stage so anything is possible just open your mind.

We don’t have to think head shaving although that can have artistic merit’s one can use clipper’s to do freestyle hair cutting anything from a blunt Bob to scissor over comb work. Yes if you. Understand  weight distribution, form and shape anything is possible. You just need to be creative and challenge your self. Put those scissors down and experiment.

Once we understand angles and weight distribution and so creating shape then the tool we use to do this open up so many possibilities. I truly think that more stylist should use clippers razor’s become professional and skilled using all tools available to us. Part of this is understanding weight as stated . I hope the above diagrams will help.

when we think about cutting with a razor they take over from the scissors or traditional razor is the effect the finished result that different to look at no but the challenge is and was achieving that with out traditional tools so a new skill another fear faced very worth it for both your and your client!maybe not for very curly hair but your in charge!

Explore using electric Clipper’s have some fun start off with willing models but push and challenge your self. Become an comfortable and skilled with all your tool’s.

The up/do. Creative, stylish ,elegant, fun.

The up/do creative fun and can be a challenge for many.

My hope over the next couple of days is to share with you one look start to finish. Then post a few different looks.

The key to getting the look you want is three fold. Firstly consultation with your client.What type of look she is hoping for what is the event ?What is she wearing? Secondly confidence in your ability to deliver said or requested look. Lastly. Vision and technical ability to create something that will not only look good but will last the evening what ever might transpire!!

Just like all other services we offer. We have to work with order and structure. creating shape and final look is still about structure and foundation building and creating a look that will last look elegant and stylish.

Length of hair type of hair should not be an issue if you know what your doing and work with confidence this comes with practice .

As I post shots of this models hair going up you will see even though it’s really long it’s quite easy to manipulate. Being good at back combing really helps and working neatly be organised.

The look we are creating will be very polished and elegant with height at the crown to achieve this i have started with a high partial pong tail and pulled it through a doughnut to give me a solid base and extra height on the crown. Before starting to wrap the hair around the base i back comb it to give volume smoothing it out with a Mason pearson brush.

With so much hair to work with leaving the brush in the fringe area keep it out of the clients face and will create extra bend or wave for me down the road. When working with such long hair work with it don’t fight it.It tells you were it wants to lie just go with it work with it. play with it to see what looks best

This shot show’s how the shape is coming together the height is forming on the crown we are in control of each section as we place it. It’s starting to be fun! Remembering that we are looking to create a shape with height width and texture.but smooth and elegant.Everything in this look revolves around the central pony tail and doughnut.

Here we are the look is staring to come together we have now incorporated the sides  in the look it shows of both the highlights and movement of the look we have set out to create. We still have some work to do on the crown area and some long hair still to hide and work with.

Almost done now as your can see all that long hair has been used to create a pleated look giving the look lots of dimension and texture .showing off the multi tonal colours. this type of up do will stay up all day and night!

One strand left to play with. We have also added a little with a little blue hair extension just for a little variety.

The last step is to work to put the finishing touches to the look lose any unwanted stray hair’s make sure it tight feels safe and that the client feels confident with the look and how it feels. Does it feel safe and secure and is it comfortable ! Yes no pins sticking in her head!

 Final look soft elegant  and yet think very sophisticated.  total time to do this about 45mins start to finish

not pre curling not hot rollers just blow dried the day before. Back combing and hair spray

I hope that it will encourage you  as a stylist to have some fun and enjoy putting hair up.I hope it helps show you a method and encourages you to play. As a client if you looking for idea’s work with your stylist. Take in pictures of looks like like but be prepared to listen to advise.On how it might look and if your hair is suitable. will it stand the test of time !!! more looks tomorrow

Hairdressing learning the basic! Then what?


Learning the Basics and Building on Them

We assume that if a stylist is working in a salon they have satisfied the examination board and reached a professional NVQ standard of qualification or another recognised qualification depending the country you trained in if differs greatly.

In so many cases students leave college with a good solid basic knowledge of the industry and newly qualified – The world is their oyster. Challenges creative excited!

But after a couple of years they can become disillusioned. They blame the industry. The products.

The salon owner or other staff but never take a look in the mirror to see the real problem.

In so many cases we like to stay with the safe option, never step outside the box or push the envelope. A certain level ability is attained and then we sit back thinking we know it all [ego takes over]. You might think – The salon has education updates and product reviews. But you think you were at the last one two years ago so why go again since you have heard it all before.

It is very hard to improve without admitting that you have any weaknesses or a lack of knowledge in the first place. It’s like being at school and afraid to raise your hand  because you don’t understand. You worry that your question might be seen as silly but the only foolish question is the one you don’t ask.

To truly succeed in our industry we have to learn so many different skills related  to our job. These are not always in a manual. There are some life skills and some that are taught. The key is be honest with yourself. Education and knowledge is power. Know your limits and be honest about your ability and then keep learning.

A good example of this would be to do colour correction one has to have a solid knowledge of colour – both practical and theory.

Ask these questions. Can it be done? Should it be done? Can I do it? 9 times out of ten correction is colour that has been messed up at home or by another semi professional stylist.

So the question should be will the salon benefit from this being done? Will you as the stylist benefit from doing this? If the answer is yes then question, question question! Look, touch, consult other stylist team members and then decide how to proceed.

Whilst researching information on Wella colour, I came across this review of Koloston Colour on the website. The stylist said “I used the same colour on four different clients and never got the same colour twice. You cannot trust the swatch or the colour!”

For me this highlights perfectly all the issues raised. This stylist needs to look in that mirror to understand that the starting canvas was different in each case so the same results couldn’t be expected.

From time to time we all need to reflect on where we are at and maybe make some changes.Nothing is ever set in stone ad we have to be equipped to make changes as situation change  position open up opportunities arise .Choices consequences making a decision living with it. Become empowered by staying current taking update courses being a team player get involved don’t get involved in the negative stay and be positive. challenge your self and those around you.
