Thoughts idea sharing. Tips tricks

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR:

A place to share thoughts post comments and idea’s on matters relating to hair colouring skill and techniques and anything industry related.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

What does this mean exactly?

For me it’s sharing anything and everything. It’s not about short cuts or breaking rules! It’s sharing all those things that we learn and experience along the way. Those things that could save you from a pitfall or at least help you get out of one! Enables you to have all the tools needed required to get the job done.

What does it cover? Anything and everything. All that is us. All that make us. Stylist. Salon owners. Business owners. It covers skill knowledge, both technical and practical, life skills, people skills, business skills.

None of us are perfect although some think they are! None of us know everything although some think they do. Some know more than others, I’m not talking qualifications I’m talking about experience those skills we have learned along the way. Thus allowing us to share what we have learned along the way. Experience, Knowledge. Life skills, Learning from our mistakes.

It is my opinion that however good we are. However much we know. What ever skills we have if we do not share it pass it on use it to encourage others then it’s all rather pointless. Hence my blogs, my sharing.my working with young talented  creative stylist’s.

To keep it to your self to have bragging rights to crow about how good you were are !! That’s all Ego and a waste of time. Giving back sharing is key to personal growth and greater success. knowledge is power.

With all the blogs and articles I post my one goal is to share both experience and skill and knowledge.

I have been so fortunate in all the hairdressing industry has afforded me. The experiences I have had. The opportunities I have had. Some of the amazing people I have met and had the good fortune to work with. Adventures still to have.

I would very much like an opportunity to share this with as many stylist as possible to encourage mentor to challenge them to push themselves.

To salon owners to encourage them to work with staff and team members. To share and discuss what a salon is and should be. How to get the very best from your en-devours. How to offer the highest of standards of service skill to your clients. whilst increasing sales and client retention.Communication Consultation.

I had  a young stylist write to me today asking for advise. Having left college wanting to build up a clientele get busy. Yes as we all know it’s not easy it tales commitment and hard work, However i do feel that Salon owners and managers have to help the new stylist who is committed to working hard.

A guaranteed basic wage for a given period. Also a new stylist should be given all new clients to the salon for an agreed period. This shows both support and commitment. After agreed period the stylist should have proved a good client retention level and indeed added to it through recommendation.

If this is not the case the stylist has to take responsibility for both standard of work and service offered. Build a good solid clientele built on honesty trust skill knowledge and service. Mutual respect.

In these challenging economic times. Having a few skills, refusing to constantly assess honestly what skills need addressing and improving on. Reflection on how things are without taking any action on any thing that might need attention. This a very dangerous path to walk. With forward thinking passion drive motivation these can can be exciting and full of opportunity.

The salon is a place that is unique as are the people who work in it. As are the clients we attract. But the list of what a salon is. What it has to do to run smoothly is huge. It truly is quite a complex structure built of relationships ,honesty and trust.

What is the salon?

Appearance, atmosphere, Image, reputation,  staff, skill education, knowledge, people skill, passion, motivation, service, team players, dedicated. humility. sales through knowledge, respectful, caring.

Owners. Managers. Organisations. skills. Fair firm. Visionary. Sympathetic. Articulate. Service. People skills driven focused. Passion commitment. Knowledgeable . Skilled adviser. Respectful Caring.

Products: knowledge. Sales. Technical skills. On how to use products. Understand use and application.

These are all parts that together make a salon work and be successful can you tick them all off? Maybe most but a few need some attention. I think in most cases we would all be able to add to the list but also circle the need attention items. The million dollar question is Do you want to address those weaknesses? well do you! either as a salon owner or as an individual do you want to invest a little time and little money to reach new levels have higher standards reach new heights.

Tips and tricks is me offering to share with you all that I know and have experienced from. Salon ownership and management. To platform work. Education and sales. Artistic team member. Successful busy stylist. Communication skills. Consultation skills.Hands on technical skills from cutting to hair colour to updo’s what do you need help with. From one on one to small salon groups what are your needs.

My blogs and articles offer free information to help stylists of all levels improve challenge themselves and those around them.Contact me to start investing in your business your self your future. With my skill experience and knowledge and connection with other like minded professionals help is close at hand.

I can connect you with an online support program for you and your salon. What are your needs? What can we learn together. Can we take a journey of knowledge sharing and discovery what can we learn from each other what can we share? Working with students trainee’s young creative talent mentoring the stylist’s of tomorrow. This is what passion and being a professional in this industry is all about.

This article is designed for one thing to ask the question?

Are you ready for change? For the challenge. Want to grow ! can we share and learn from each other?

Encouragement for trainee hairdressers stylists.

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea’s. B2MR

I decided today to share some views posted by other fellow professionals on our industry and what they would share with any one who is thinking about or training to be a stylist.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the positive energy commitment and passion of these comment. I hope they will inspire others to share and those coming into the industry to embrace it.

For it’s an adventure a journey with challenges and choices but one well worth taking.

Here is the Question:

Question: If you had an opportunity to talk with young training stylists what would you share with them about our industry and profession. What advise would you give?

Here is some of the advise

Education , don’t be afraid to ask questions. Work together with other stylists to share knowledge within the salons you work in. Go the extra mile to let your customers know how much you care about them and appreciate their business. Don’t be afraid to give your time for free to create business. When I moved to Vancouver and was just starting out , I gave haircuts to strangers for 5 dollars, just got them in the door. I also put up a poster and the Nursing college to offer discounts to the students. It is better to be working for free than not at all because you are building experience and repeat business that will take care of your future.

Take your ego out of the profession, it never does anyone any good. My parents were both hairstylists and excellent at what they did. My father always told me to shy away from the Posers, and the Primadonas. I think that was good advice.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your clients. The more you get to know them the better you can understand how they like to look. A really good question on first meeting is, Do you like to make a quiet entrance in a room full of people or do you like to stand out right away?
Most importantly ,if you don’t like what you do , it will be very difficult to do well at it. Hairdressing is something you have to love!!

More!

I would tell them  ENJOY THE RIDE!!! It is a big, Fun, exciting, challenging career, filled with endless opportunities for personal and professional growth!

More !!!

That it’s not for everyone….If you have the talent, don’t give it up because there is no other job out there remotely close to this industry. Stay on top of Education! there is always fresh new people coming into the industry to keep up with 🙂 be dependable, listen well and never be afraid to ask questions. If you put your ALL into your work and keep patience and persistence, it will pay off in the long run. Never sell yourself short, there is too much opportunity out there :))!!

last one!

I would say dont be afraid to make mistakes – make as many as possible while your are training , Ask ,ask and ask again all the dumb question you think you have and watch -shadow a senior- question why on everything . Put yourself out there confidence comes from doing and dont beat yourself up too much, enjoy and have fun with it .

I would like to thank the members for these comments and for sharing them i hope they inspire others!

My hope is that trainee stylists and any one think about hairdressing as a profession  and career choice will get inspiration from these comments

Hairdressing. Skill, talent, creative, motivated,certified.

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR: regular postings of fresh new topic’s

                                                         razor cutting

                                  Training Skill Motivation:

Can any of us honestly say we know everything you are on top of your game? fully motivated on a daily bases giving your all? keeping up to date and current?

Or like most of us you have off days or are you having more off days than on? is going to work hard work is being at work real work maybe even to the point of resentment?

If you missing that excitement that creative buzz, passion, drive, motivation, then something is missing what could that be? Time to take a look in the one on one with who you see time!

Well now it’s time to be honest. What ever you work situation environment this might be the Salon.  Maybe your self employed. In the case of the salon sometimes its so easy to get wrapped up in the moment to busy, that product training updates falls to the way side.

Your just starting your training stay focused don’t take short cuts ask questions listen learn practice have high standards,  Aim to be the best you can never stop learning and challenging your self,

If you self employed taking the time to invest in your self also gets put to the side normally because of time and money issues. If this is the case then we convince our selves that we are doing Ok. We are up date it’s so easy for us to make excuses. The only problem with this is at the end of the day we are hurting our selves and our business we are also and most importantly letting our clients down standards of service drop.

With so many new products constantly coming onto the market it’s so important to be informed and knowledgeable both for your own sake and that of your clients.

Keratin hair relaxing products, new Ammonia free colour lines. This would be classed as product knowledge. Then  our skills techniques from colouring to cutting then we have the technical side of the equation the how and why’s sometimes gets neglected finding time just to reconnect with others share idea’s stay informed. Even with the new home use products from foam colours to home straightening kits and relaxers!

                                                               sharing

Final we have informal seminar’s that are structured to help with salon management, team and staff motivation, Service Consultation and sales.

It is my Opinion that all of the above should be reviewed and although not possible to address all  topic’s at once a plan should be drawn up to keep your business you staff  healthy and strong call it business and personal inventory or attitude adjustment.

Bad habits form slowly over time but fear not, habits can be broken just takes a willingness change a recognition of habit and indeed skill level finally a little work.

It can take as little as three weeks to break habits and start a journey onto a new path of self discovery talent and skill building sharing.

Stay at the top of you professional be a real master of your craft. Offer the highest standard of Service. Become a specialist in your field take control of your future your career your life.

If you need help I would be happy to talk or work with you or your team.

The Hair salon. Sales education service.

Welcome to B2MR BACK2MYROOTS!

http://www.back2myroots.co.uk/

Regular postings of fresh new topic’s.

                                          Sales or sharing?

A place to share thoughts review hair colour and products.

This topic is worthy of both discussion, thought, and comment, for it effects each and every one involved in the Hairdressing Industry.

But in what order should the title be in ? What do you think?

Having Spent a number of years involved in Sales and education or is it? Education and sales:

It’s so hard to know for one supports the other. [ chicken and egg what comes first]

One side sales drives the education machine funding allowing technicians and educators into salons to share and demonstrate. On the other hand without the support of good education the sales go flat. Salons. Stylist lose interest, use products incorrectly getting bad results blaming the product!

It is my view. That if you really trust and have belief in a product it will sell it self. If your educated a product how and why it works. If you have a passion for it, it’s easy to talk about it sells it self.

So why so much pressure on sales why fear education?

In salons many stylist hate education up dates. They look at educators as know it all’s, they attempt to put then down show them up why?  FEAR!

Most salons change colour lines because of dissatisfaction with the product. If it does not perform well in reality the fault is with the stylist technician. But hey! It’s always easier to blame a product than take an honest look in the mirror!

Tuff harsh words but true. I don’t know how many salons I’ve visited that so need education support but the staff, the manager will not allow it.

I also think that many sales representatives have very little respect for what a good passionate educator can do.

Why because they fear letting any one see that they don’t know everything! who does? The fact is Sales are Sales. Education is just educating. On how to correctly use and get the best out of the product that sharing knowledge giving support to the salon to the sales person to the staff this can only serve to improve. Standards. Skill. Knowledge. So why all the problems?

Ego, Insecurity, Fear? or just an un-daunting need for control!  All things that are rife in society but for some reason really run rampant in the Hair beauty industry.

We have salon managers and owners who fear educating there staff to much. We have staff who hate to admit they have an issues or don’t understand. Will not admit that they want or need more education, skill and knowledge.

We have professional Colour companies who market them selves with being professional. But flood the market with home colour kits. With little or no care for the effect on the high street salon, the stylist trying to make a living build up a clientele not to mention the damage long term use can do from use of home colour.

Colour Companies that offer education to some to degree but maybe not fully transparent when it comes to formulation ! Maybe not totally honest about all the chemistry of any given product need to know bases! misleading.

We have schools Colleges, Academy’s. All offering a level of training but! How qualified? How up to date are those trainers? How much do they really care? How skilled are they? How current are they?

We have young people coming into the industry with a false idea of how successful they can be. How much there is to learn. How long it takes to be a success.

We have Stylist who reach a level of qualification and then sit back knowing everything knowing nothing? why is this?

We have all these different governing bodies have you ever tried contacting them to ask for a meeting or some information? good luck with that one.

Am I out spoken? Well maybe but it’s done it’s said to create discussion, to open up debate, to see who really cares! Not to be politically correct.

I have over the years worked with  many like minded passionate industry professional and they are all of the mind that things could be better standards raised, knowledge shared. education improved so what can we do how can we make a difference?

How can we encourage an exchange of knowledge and information. disclosing of product information in an open transparent manner.  One with sales teams working with and supporting education. Stylist who constantly want to up-date. Teachers trainers. Who really care how to encourage the young stylist to have higher standards, skill, who pride themselves in levels of Service and consultation.

This is possible by net working sharing reaching out. We have so many mediums available to us  this is such a huge multifaceted Industry. It’s exciting vibrant. It’s constantly growing, changing evolving, whilst at the same time standing still .

I have set up the Linked in professional hairdressing net work in the hopes of attracting like minded people to join share and debate. Many thanks Mike B2MR

This help comes in many forms. It could be helpful books, seminars, courses, presentations, demonstrations. The key is to have a vision of what you want, where you want your career to go.

Think of your career as a bus journey. Lots of people on board with you, but hey, you’re the driver, take your eyes off the road and oops.

We are all in charge of our own destiny we have to make choices live with the consequences challenge ourselves. Share. net work. use professional training bodies her in the Uk HABIA are such  a key part of our industry ,But they too need the support of stylists and professionals.

Hairdressing.Net working multi Media resources.

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea’s. B2MR

The Internet  and professional groups for sharing and learning

We live on a vast planet ever evolving and changing yet it’s so small. We all of us are also constantly evolving. The  business the profession the training the skills all like the planet constantly changing and evolving. In so many cases the day today issues we have in the salon with our clients are unilateral.

Service offered. Standards of skill. Education. Training. Staffing. Client retention.

Same issues yet level’s of accepted qualification vary from. Region to region.State to state. Province to Province . Country to country.

What is global accepted is the exchange of views skill knowledge over the internet . A sharing between like minded professional of knowledge and views.

Over the last months whilst working to build up an internet presence and indeed a  Net work of contacts. I have had the good fortune to connect with some wonderful like minded motivated true professional.

What amazes me is two fold.

One the ease of communication on a global scale. With E-mail.  Text. Skype. Video.  It is now possible to by pass the time zones and share thoughts, idea’s, net work. share a vision on a international scale.

It is very apparent to me that some of the huge issues that exist here in the UK within our Industry are alive and well every where.  Why did? How did this topic come up?

Firstly it dawned on me that although it’s such an amazing networking tool It’s emotionless so one has to be careful with the tone of what they write. Also any information shared should be considered before posting not knowing who might read or apply any views thoughts or idea’s shared!

Then it dawned on me that so many young stylist’s training hairdresser’s and indeed Tutor’s could gain so much from joining and being active in some of the industry professional groups. That share thoughts idea’s and topic’s. By having a open honest conversation about issues that arise in the Salon. Be they Service related or skill .Issues of. Image. Communication. Consultation. Or just group issue’s and topic’s raised.

We all need to constantly work on. Self adjustment . Self assessment on what needs a little honest attention. Are you up for this challenge?

Find a professional group become active ask question’s join discussion’s learn grow connect. This goes beyond some of the daily media interaction that we all now use on a daily bases.

Face book. Twitter. Email .Text. It is more focused than these medium’s it’s you choosing a group to share with lean from.

This is not written to promote any specific group so I am not posting any links I would however suggested that even if training consider starting to build a professional profile of your. Skill. Qualification.Certification.Training. This may just over time help you and others  as skill and professional qualification become more accepted and Industry recognised. By professional bodies and salon owners.

For new stylists and trainee’s these sights are a great way to access professional help.ask questions get real hands on answer’s on anything Industry related. So go on re search a group  build a profile and  a net work Tutor’s and educators.

Build a profile and stay current with industry thoughts views and topic’s share it with your students!

Check out a Linkedin as a place to start. Mike B2MR

What next in the hair industry:

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR. Regular postings of fresh new topic’s

sharing techniques

A little self indulgent. As I write these blogs and post articles. I pause I take time to reflect on what next.

I constantly search for new places to connect with other professionals and groups to stay current to stay in touch with all that is new and topical.

Where does the next challenge lie? What direction will my career take me in. Will any more doors open. What opportunities will arise. I trust that if one puts out positive thought supported with positive action only good can come from it. Sharing what you know the experience you have is also key

What do I miss being behind a chair? What would I like to do next ? A hard one to answer being honest with one’s self! I think we have to constantly move forward grow and face new challenges.  My career to date has afforded me so many opportunities. Many of these just seem to appear come out of left field. So I have to trust an opportunity will come out of all this Net working and Blogging.

At present I am really enjoying and learning so much about both the internet and connecting up all the various media applications available to us.

My passions being. Working with others. To share the experience I have gained over the years.

From.Platform work in conjunction with. Artistic team work. Education work or just working with Individual salons and hairdressers. To improve skill and knowledge. I really think that the keys to individual successes vary for us all .We are all different  we all have different challenges and motivation. We all have different standards this is dependent on the Individual and their situation.

These situation and standards vary so much.

If in a salon.

Relationships between. Owner. Management. Staff team. Image. Service. Consultation. Sales skills. Product knowledge. Jointly sharing a vision those goals.

For the individual stylist. Service first and foremost!

Education. knowledge. Technical skills. Communication skill. Consultation skills. People skills.  Followed by goals, motivation ,inspiration, creativity.

Opportunities career direction.

Colour technician. Educator for colour company.Platform artist.Artistic team member.

Salon.

Competition work. Photo shoots. In house model nights and training, product knowledge.

All these above are aspects of our industry. The things that all salons at some point need to look at, they need to address these to stay current. To keep up with the constant changes and demands in our industry.

With so many distributors. Offering products on line, having face book pages, being interactive with clients. Those clients being us the salon owners. The stylist.  The support required is both. Practical. Technical. It’s help and advise, access to demonstrations, education events, knowledge sharing.

The perfect situation would be, to work with a distributor, to share knowledge and experience. Whilst promoting products through. Education. Service and consultation skills,

This i did very successfully. Whilst working with a major distributor, doing platform work and artist   team work, all whilst representing a major colour company. It is my belief that education and sales go hand in hand. Sales funds education, education, stimulates sales. Through knowledge and experience.

At this point in my career I’m beginning to feel that I having a full understanding of all the different products sold over the counter. Having said that they still keep changing tweaking re packaging. We have to stay on top of. How they work. What’s in them.and why. It’s essential to stay current and keep up with these ever changing products and the technology they bring.

We have to be able to. Explain and give reason to clients. What these products do show why. The services we offer and perform are worth while. That we are the experts. Who understand the chemistry of hair, also understands the down side and indeed pitfalls, that can be associated with, the use of some of these unprofessional store purchased products, be that colour or home hair relaxer’s.

From a clients point view. They can only know what, the adverts and media portray. They don’t know or have the product knowledge. To understand what might happen. What the ramifications could be from misuse, that’s out job. The professional. To advise. To recommend. To inform. This is not selling. this is doing our job and the consultation correctly. Being totally professional.

Back to me. My next path. My Journey. Will it be. Education. consultation and sharing Promoting Education training and work ethic’s an opportunity doing any of these are my goal.  year. Using all the experience I  have gained along with my belief in. Raising both the bar and indeed the awareness of issue relating to our profession.Working with and helping others to grow. To be as successful as they want to be, for it is in every ones hands. To make the changes to grow and succeed.

What ever you read and see on the internet offering help and advise always do lots of re search ! Some of that advise is polluted tainted just bad. Be warned get informed.

Growing and developing our Business:

How do we do this without investment ? what do we invest in? what do we expect to see as our return on investment? How do we decide?

So many thoughts and questions :

Are you like so many your salon is a good steady business but you feel it could be more. It has so much potential if only.

We had a higher profile!

If i could attract another really good stylist!

if we had more client retention?

If overall sales were higher.

Stylist demand so much. Commission Chair rental. issues!

How do you reach these goals these targets? How do you decide on a path to reach your goals is it possible?

The answer is a very big yes! But sometimes you are so much part of the salon and so part of the issues you cannot step back a look at things in a new and different way.

With over 35 years in this industry my goal is to help advise and get you to that next level is it a journey you want to take?  then lets connect. lets see if we can work together for like a client stylist relationship it has to work are you up for a challenge.
