Respect:

Do you respect your staff ? Do they respect you? Without respect it can be so very hard if not impossible to have a salon running smoothly without and hitches or staffing issues. How does one gain and retain respect in the work place? First and foremost it’s a two way street other wise known as mutual respect.  How does it work? It’s earned over time by actions, commitment, sharing of a vision. Making positive change happen. Being inspirational to those around you. Being a leader. Being a listener . None of this happens over night it takes time to develop. It can not be brought and yet it is invaluable. Respect encourages those around you to listen and or take action to embrace change. Lack of respect can and is very disruptive it creates many issues especially in a leadership or management situation. Once lost it’s very hard to regain.

In the salon or spa environment respect for each other open communication collaboration will enable the salon to function without distraction, without the disfunction that can be created when respect is lost and chaos per sues. In one of many forms from staffing issues and poor management decisions general morale. An openness with regard to salon /spa running and the big picture a sharing of a vision a willingness to listen and on occasion make changes is all part of being respected being a leader you also must give respect to those around you. Ultimately this contributes to better salon management a better working environment and so creating an atmosphere that works to the benefit of all concerned. Clients can and do pick up on this.

 Trust: 

Closely and many might say running side by side with respect is ‘Trust’ this we build. Without trust it’s really is very hard to function and get anything done. To not be trusted or have trust in some one or some thing creates negativity it will slowly bring you or your business down. If this is an issue you really do need to spend some time think it through. If it’s a person a team mate employee ask the question. Why? Don’t you trust them. Can it be addressed is it a situation that can be fixed. If not before making that tuff decisions seek advise from those around you, those you respect ! If it’s a thing then it’s much easier however good it might be if it’s not working for you and you cannot get past trusting it get rid of it! Don’t waste time and energy on things that don’t warrant it.

Without Trust in a salon between every member of the team decent can rapidly creep in negative energy can be and is so distractive. If this is the case council those team members work mates managers that you respect and make decisions on how to address and deal with any situation that might arise. Don’t be hasty consider the situation what created it. Decide on an informed course of action.

 Vision:

Finally that vision this is yours. In this case it’s of your business but it can relate to any aspect of your life for each and very one should have a vision. In this instance we are relating it to work. Once you have clear vision share it with those around you. Those you Respect and trust make sure they share this vision with you so that you are all working toward the same goal.

By sharing your vision with team members you are not only sharing your vision for the future you are also showing that you respect and trust them. There is a synergy between the three words. That synergy comes to fruition when put into action. When action starts to happen, things start to change, they start to progress. As this happens embark on constructive dialogue with team mates and staff members collaborate encourage  new thoughts and ideas innovative idea’s that might help your vision become a reality for all those sharing it with you.

The look the challenge the journey all working together to make it happen and share in the success. Having a vision a goal is what motivates and drives us sharing a vision with others helps it become a reality.

Have the right team wanting and willing to share your vision respecting your commitment trusting you to share thoughts views opinions trust a willingness to listen and collaborate.

Hair colour make over colour correction

Our tool box of knowledge is full: We also have to have an understanding of hair colour.Different types of hair dye and trust the colour chart.

Lets consider what is a make over and what would be classed as mild correction.

Before I introduce client and stylist, lets share a little history. This young lady is in her teenage years. Like most teenagers experimented  home colour and going Blonde. One day she decided that she would go to a professional stylist and have it taken from being to blonde back to her own colour a basic colour dye job! or so she thought.

The picture to the below is after the salon had to attempts at correcting it back to her own colour. The result being hair with a green Hue know by us professionals as Mud. Why Mud? well when re pigmentation of the hair is required it is essential to re build the hairs natural pigment mantle using the correct shade of dye consulting the colour chart helps. If you don’t do this and apply the incorrect shades and tones the pigments can clash with each other or neutralise each other out causing a muddy colour. Once this has happened it’s really hard to  re balance it.

What happened in this case was an under qualified hairdresser took the job on she applied her natural level as a tint or permanent colour using 6N with 20 volume peroxide with out any thought to pigment missing the effect of adding yet more lift to the hair. no consideration to poor condition, past history and finally the under tone pigment in that level 6N.

A totally mess when it went wrong she then tried toning it with various other shades to kill the green hue hence the mud shade created. she even had the audacity to charge for this total mess. the young girl knew no better than to pay. having been lead to trust this was the best the colour could be!

How do you fix this? Could you?

Well let me introduce to you Kate our client and Alex out stylist:

This really is a challenge. To have the full history of the above hair colour disaster maybe find out what hair dye was used, Alex has to do his consultation with Kate. The key here is for Alex to get as much information a she can about past history and also get a clear idea as to expectation. At this point he has to honestly tell Kate what is possible.This cannot be ego driven it has to be within his own skill and ability. Trust me when i say it takes a bigger person to say sorry this is beyond me than to muddle on. Remember we have already had one professional screw up. As soon as Alex agrees to take this on he assume all responsibility for it. [ strand test, optional client wavier release form, fully advised of process]. Having chatted with Kate two things are established she knows her hair is very over processed and damaged she wants to look and feel better she is open to change both of colour and cut.

Alex goes on to explain  that although the really bad colour in her hair looks dark drab muddy due to the condition it will not last very long and could gentle be removed, they could then either re pigment and go warmer or they could go lighter but with many natural shades.

Alex explains that the first thing they will do is a mild cocktail made from shampoo.Bleach decolouriser. conditioner.and low volume peroxide.This will remove all the muddy pigment and give them a stripped canvas to work from. Kate says sounds like I’m in for a long visit . Alex say well once we see what we can lift out we can see what the best course of action will be for our future colour. Alex say’s don’t worry Kate we can fix this. Your lucky that your  natural skin tone and eye colour leave the door open for colour options. Really says kate never thought of that!

Off to the back wash for the cocktail.

Note whilst Alex is mixing I will insert some information  on a cocktail formulation.

A bleach bath or cocktail formulation:

As i said many variables to lift out residue of old fashion shade try Clarifying shampoo or a bleach bath Shampoo bleach washed through and worked into hair. {if doing this stay with it constantly watching}

If making up a cocktail to lift old shades out try.

*1/2 oz Clarifying shampoo.

*1oz      Water.

*1oz       20 vol peroxide {or cream developer}

*1 oz      powder bleach.

Apply to clean towel dried hair, work through on area needing lift for 5 to 10 mins. watching all the time wash out rinse thoroughly.

This in itself i class as a colour correction tool, as mild as it is you must stay with it know wondering off for a smoke, a chat a coffee.This is serious stuff!

Alex works the formulation into kate’s hair once whilst applying it warns her it’s a bit cold and bit smelly! you could say that say Kate. Alex gets a wide comb and continually combes the formula  into and through her hair gradually the mixture starts to work it’s lifting. All that mud is going down the drain. After about 20minutes he is happy done he says no we can get going. he rinses a very light shampoo to remove any traces of the formula  cool water .Now he says sitting kate back down we will lightly dry it and decide on course of action.

To the colour and formulation: Thus far i very impressed with the skill Alex is showing and professional approach. We have now removed all that muddy un-wanted pigment Alex has a better idea of what is possible so he has a better vision to share with Kate. How serious is she about change? Alex says to Kate as you can see we have removed all that muddy colour. Kate says yes i back where i started but ££ pounds lighter. Right says Alex lets establish two things colour and style. Right he says with some authority I see it fair bit shorter but with texture and movement.

Colour wise lets work with the blonde, but re introduce shades that work with you, let beige this out with caramels, toffee, cool blondes and burnt honey golds. WOW ! Says Kate you can do that, Yes we can it will look great how does it sound to you amazing. Ok say’s Alex given how over processed your hair is all we have to do is deposit different shades and buildup the pigment long term work on the colour retention.I can recommend some products to help both with moisiture in your hair and colour retention qualities if you like great says Kate.

Lets get going. You ready says Alex!  First thing i’m going to do is cut a fair bit of hair off we don’t need to colour all this waste time money and product .Out comes the razor and things start to take shape. Once the bulk of the weight has been removed and shape formed. Alex, say’s to Kate feel good yes say’s Kate. Right now lets sort out this colour bear with me whilst i mix up some Formulations.

Whilst Alex is Mixing I will share with you the Different formulations:

Demi Deposit Only: Tone on tone or darker lift or higher levels of Hydrogen peroxide are not required! Remember we are going for deposit Only this over processed hair does not need any more peroxide and lift.

First Colour level 6 BR[Beige Red] remember first letter dictates stronger shade. In this choice Alex is choosing a rich beige shade but also re introducing some warm pigment back in to the hair,a wise choice. 1oz[30 grams] 6RB 2oz [60grams]  demi lotion developer. Second choice 7 GB [gold beige] again more re introduction of pigment quantity as above 1 part colour to 2 parts Demi lotion. Final choice 6B just beige will have a stronger depth than other choices.formulation as above. These are all none progressive colour formulations no need to worryabout over deposit.

Back with Alex. He explains to Kate we are going to re introduce three different shades into your hair and at the same time replace some of the warmer pigments this will give depth and tone.At the same time we will leave out some chunks of the existing blonde we will tone this later to create a nicely controlled Beige blonde that will compliment the look and style. sounds great says Kate.Oh Alex says we are also going to use the same shade sin panels in the under part of your hair to create some depth and dimension. lets get going with all these colours.

Alex works quickly with great skill we weaves out different section choosing where to place the shades and panels. Once finished he takes section from the base hair line applying the different shades in solid blocks. working from the hair line nape up to just below the occipital bone jaw line just above the ears. thus creating solid block area of three shades. leaving out the lighter chunks of pre lifted hair in the top section.

Finally all applied leaves it to process around 20 minutes no heat required!! [Heat is not good for colour, it’s not needed colouring is a process of fromulation and timing] all that is required is the correct choice of products and patients!

After 20 minutes Alex takes kate to the back wash rinse of all colour .Then decides to apply a Beige toner to control the Blonde that was left out and tie the beige theme into together. As he works the Toner into Kate’s  hair he stays with it as it starts to work on the yellow blonde  sections creating a really nice cool natural beige. Done re rinsed shampooed  conditioned ready for a little more razor work and a blow dry.

Well what a great job Alex managed to save the day and Kate looks amazing i hope you agree that this was a job well done. As for Kate well happy does not even cover the emotion she felt and how pleased she was.

A hair colour disaster and fix.

Here we are looking at a colour correction scenario:

*What is the best way to share with you? To look at real issues!

*How do we put all of this new found information into practice. By solving issues.

*How do we apply this knowledge in a practical sense? Does it really work. By thinking through the issue panning!

By sharing some real life salon colour stories with you.

We can cover many of the issues that you can expect and do come across daily with your clients. [ please note names of clients and stylists changed events situation are based on real events] Permission to publish and relay these cases have been sought and given.

In all my years as an educator I have been fortunate and have had the pleasure to be invited into many salons. These are some cases that arose whilst spending time in any given salon or in my own career as a stylist none are made up. In most cases of salon colour mistakes the error are caused buy the stylist making poor choice for applications.

Lets get on our colour case:

Alison came into the salon. She had long hair mid way down her back. Her goal going lighter maybe some nice caramel toffee low lights. She had solid colour built up with a number of applications over number of visits.

Sounds easy Right?

Firstly Alison needed to have a consultation with Paul her stylist. Discuss her goal and optimum colour target. Both need to be honest about past colour history. Her natural level would be around level 5. The colour that had been used for previous colours was a rich dark brown around level 4. In this instance Demi colour formulation for tone on tone deposit only! Long term build up would be a issues. This came out in the consultation process.

Lots of pigment would have built up over time and application this needs to be lifted and  underlying pigment exposed. With the build up of darker shade in the mid lengths and ends  the lifting process would take some time. Staring from the ends and working towards the scalp. It was discussed that the root will lift Blonde very quickly. So the approach would be to use a bleach formulation with be applied to the ends and mid section first. The roots would be left until a desired level was attained as they would lift very quickly. The Prolonged use of the dark brown colour over a long term would cause build up of colour mid length’s and ends.

Alison should have been given a strand test. She did ask for strand test Paul her stylist said’  That will not be required [first mistake and short cut] . Is this that hard?  Remove a small amount of hair from the nape area and have it coloured or lifted prior to full head application. It’s lazy .It’s un professional it’s taking short cuts!

This would have required especially as. Bleaching out old pigment and applying the formulation from the ends up through mid length and finally to the root would create colour bars of pigment also taking into consideration the weave of the highlights.Once lifted evenly to a desired workable tone. Apply toner to even out to desired shade and tone.

Why so work end sot roots you may ask? The ends will lift the slowest and will dictate the end result the mid lengths although coloured less still holding lots pigment. This pigment exposed in the lifting process will tend to be very warm copper or orange. This will need toning to neutralise the unwanted warmth.

After her consultation with Paul. Alison is ready to get her new caramel low lights done

As stated this colour was always done as deposit only. No lift when going tone on tone or darker unless you want to add or increase warmth you do not need lifting levels of hydrogen peroxide. Any build up of colour is just layers of dark pigment. As stated a rich dark brown it matches her skin colour and hazel eyes. Many salons over book they don’t allow the time or put in the effort to do a job correctly.When things go wrong they may make excuses about the product, may pretend it looks great. It’s how it was supposed to look. But it’s the client who has to be excited love this new look get what she wants and requested.

They have trusted us.Sat in the chair patiently.They asked all the right questions. They gave us time to decide on the best course of action to take. Having supposedly considered all options.

                                     After low lights

Why does this happen? What went wrong? what do you see? what do you think? Why do you think it went wrong! Paul had done the consultation asked all the right questions. But took short cuts starting with refusing the need for a strand test. By not thinking the process through working in from the ends to the mid length finally to the roots. He rushed and failed. He did not allow enough time for the different levels of lift to be addressed.

Remember the request was for low lights. Caramel toffee. Remember suggested strand test. Consultation .Remember if he had lifted the hair from ends in. Allowing for the fact that the mid lengths may throw orange and roots would lift really quickly. All would have been well, time consuming but it’s never race!

Lets review. Firstly I was shocked. Sad. Appalled by this poor quality job. Caused by taking short cuts with very little thought given to the process or out come! A rush job. Firstly the the blonde on the roots to eye level really does not work for her. It sucks the colour from her skin and is just a nothing dull boring shade of blonde.

The mid lengths did not lift as much as required or expected they formed a colour bar. A very bright copper orange as the dark pigment lifted out. Finally the mid lengths into the ends lifted such a little that they still look solid and dark very little lift. There is no way by just applying toner this can or could be fixed.  It was doomed to fail. This was caused by some one being lazy, applying bleach de-colouriser roots to ends and just hoping that it may all lift evenly or at least enough to colour balance it! Hoping that whatever pigments exposed could be evened out with a toner. In doing this the tones made the blonde dull had little effect on the orange and well the ends ! Hum Hoping is not good enough!! use the tools we have consult charts .work within the rules.

The strand test should have been carried out in advance of the appointment. The strand test shown and discussed with client then the process carried out correctly with a great out come. Why oh why do we allow this to happen? Why do we let our selves down . Is it lack of time?  Is it Easy money? well hardly if now you have to fix and re do! Lack caring. Paul let his client down. He let the salon down. He let himself down! Oh how does this look to the staff what message does it send Paul is the owner!!

Can this be fixed: Yes or course it can. As stylist’s when things go wrong we have to drop any attitude and put right a wrong.even more so when it in no way the fault of the client,who now has to return find more time and we have to regain that trust! drop the ego! 

To review:  The attempt at lifting evenly from roots to ends was a failure. Leaving over lightened roots mid lengths with a real orange hue and very little lift on the ends. The desired effect was for toffee caramel low lights.

The picture was provided client Alison. But as you can see it really was a poor job. When seeing this many thing came to mind apart from the poor job. First though was how the blonde just did not work with either skin tone or eye colour.

My suggestion would be get rid of it ASAP! Go back to being a rich dark healthy chocolate brown.

How would you do this, well it certainly would not require any more lift just a re build of the pigment base in the over lightened section then colour balance. My suggestion would be to fill the over lightened section with a Demi formulation of either 7G or 7GC predominantly gold but with enough copper to balance with with warmth of the mid section. only apply to overly lifted area. leave for around 10 Minutes or[ follow your product directions ] remember you only need deposit formulation. Once pre filled apply target shade over the top apply liberally leave to process.

Alison waited a week to get back into see Paul. This is not acceptable it should have been corrected on the day. In some cases this may not be possible in this instance it would have been. As mentioned with the issues created a pre-fill to replace the pigment removed would give the hair depth of tone and solves any issues of fading.

Alison asked if it might be a good idea to put some pigment back in the overly blonde roots. { How did she know to ask for this? yes i advised her.} Sadly Paul still in a hurry still taking short cuts indicated this would not be required one application would be enough. Well one would be enough and look fine as she left but long term in the days and weeks ahead? It will fade.Paul applied the 4N Demi formulation directly over the top and the colour was restored to a rich solid all over Chocolate Brown.

However Paul has taken short cuts. This colour will fade he may well lose a client through what lack of service! The colour did start to fade within a week. Sheila went to a different salon Carl lost a good client.

Here is my thinking on the Fix:

In this instance if our goal is  to achieve a rich chocolate Brown. I have re introduced the missing pigment to the root area, to prevent fading and give depth of tone. However i will also need to control that warmth to get the correct depth of colour.

              look for location of orange section blue green section.

Lets look at the chemistry of a formulation.

4N has a Blue green base.

Check your colour wheel on your product ! green is made up of Blue+Yellow.

So given that we put on 7G the gold + Yellow + Red+yellow= orange

The 4N Blue + yellow +Blue= green

The out come of this formulation is the Base of the 4N will control or neutralise the warmth creating a wonderful rich chocolate brown.

As you can see from the colour wheel Orange sits across from Blue Green of the colour wheel so a perfect rich shade is possible.

Finally the after shot again provided by Alison I did not carry out this colour fix but did advise her at various stages throughout the process in return she allowed me to share the experience.

Out come

The chosen formulation controlled all warmth and left her with a rich dark brown filling in all those unwanted shades and the nasty root lift. Again this was all done with a Demi formulation for all those interested the process time is only 20 minutes so once applied  it’s a very easy way to repair poor colour issues. As a formulation it is none progressive so will not over deposit. it will last and stay rich and deep and healthy looking. Alison now has a new Stylist and is happy to be a rich dark brunette shade again. Sadly the experience has put her off trying again for a new multi tonal look.lets hope over time her new stylist gains her trust.

The hair salon Control or collaboration.

Management leadership and control Or Collaboration. In the Salon and training facilities:

Certainly not a normal topic for hair related blog but one worthy of discussion and one that may well be of interest to you and your team.

Why a topic an leadership management and collaboration ? Well i think that it’s a very relevant topic to look at. One that can and does get ignored.One that can play a role to successful team building encouraging  creative and innovative thinking and sharing of idea’s in the salon.

At this time I might suggest that the ‘Collaborative thinking’ suggested in this topic could so easily be employed by. Colleges. Academy’s and the Salon’s. To better the. Student. Apprentice and trainee experience of our industry. Creative innovative thinking!

The hair salon it’s our theatre:

What is the salon but a stage what are we but player’s in a play.The play being the unscripted play called ‘The salon today’. This scenario played out daily staring the staff and clients. These unscripted scene’s play out daily evolving as the interaction between client and stylist take place. Entertaining, challenging, rewarding, sometimes thought provoking. What ever the case always different. As the day progresses so does the play some of the cast change be that stylist or clients but the play must go on.

On occasion this this rhythm this natural flow can break down or be interrupted. By an out side force or influence. This can be very disturbing normally caused when some one is trying to hard to be the director and producer. In this instance maybe an over zealous manager maybe an owner who likes to have tight control over the salon and how it runs.

Leadership and management: I believe very important and do contribute to making a salon or spa run more efficiently but this power in the wrong hands can and will cause issue or problems. Good management and indeed leadership occurs when support is given to others providing them with the tools and or environment to do and indeed deliver great service. This becomes hindered when the motivation is not selfless.

Team or group meetings:

How often do you have team meetings? Idea’s are kicked around plans put in place for change and or improvement. How often is the right praise or recognition given to the right person? Appreciation, thanks, reward, incentive.

Some times as managers and owners we forget that it takes many small parts to make the big part work. Some times as manager and or department heads we can fail! How? Because we cannot let go we have to have control we have to be seen as the one holding everything together. We want and need constant approval and recognition for all that is achieved. This does not lend to a good working environment. It’s to ‘controlling’

Control or collaboration:

It takes a much braver person with a bigger vision to encourage collaboration for this means letting go of the rein’s! Collaboration creates ’empowerment’ improves problem solving increases creativity encourages innovation. Why are so many business’s afraid of it? The short answer is that collaborations dangerous! Collaboration relives one’s immediate control. scary ha! This may well sound quite threatening to some owners and managers. Maybe we can look at some reason as to why!

Collaboration to me is: 

A sharing of thoughts visions idea’s. It’s encourages us to step out side of our comfort zone look beyond our own expertise. For this to really work a certain level of ambiguity has to be accepted by all.

The letting go of ‘control’ comes in to play, because for collaboration to work hierarchy has to put to the side. An approach of ‘tribe of doing things’ needs to move in and ‘chief of all answers’ needs to step down ! This should open the doors for ‘thinking together’ problem solving taking action.Talk is not enough!!

Collaboration really only works. When there has to be a flow of all information dialogue and so progress between the group or team. This might be hard for some but it’s key to the team and so to the ‘collaborative thinking process’. Some times conflict can happen this has to be addressed it cannot be ignored. Avoiding it indicates that you don’t know how to fight or stand up effectively. Trade off and compromise skills to learn and employ.

Collaboration: Happens on top of or out side of normal work. It takes commitment it can at times seam  overwhelming and stressful. Sometimes we here the term ‘Oh things would be so much better if we could just collaborate a little more’  But really it’s not that easy. how often is it put into practice?

Collaboration is about friction debate forging of new idea’s and ways to work better together.Owners and managers need to do more than just tell others what to do they have to listen, team members have to have a voice and use it!  You cannot just point out. ‘hey that’s broken’ and walk away! It has to be fixed. The fear is by many. That an opinion will be asked for! When given this opinion must be listened to.

This thinking may well not be right for all. ‘Leadership’ Is to bring this change about. One of direction and focus supported by and with ‘Followership’. The supporting team.’Collaborating together to bring about change and innovation. These efforts should be judged on out come. They offer no reward for’ Individual merit for effort! letting go of preconceived idea’s. All working together for the common good.

Collaboration. Innovation. Creative thinking.All growing together  create solution get past the problem ask the question ‘How’ the rest follows.

It has been intentional to use the same pictures in some case twice it an example of how we can repeat. How easy it is to have the same discussion and little or no action.

If you as an owner and your team are ready for a challenge one that takes commitment and hard work but offers full support to you  and your team to grow your business and deal with the many issues that arise you might be ready to take a look at the passionate team at ‘Salon success’ and all the experience they can offer you. Motivation work with a Mentor.

Mentor and the mentored: 

From time to time  words and phases get revitalised re born one such word and term associated with this at the moment is ‘Mentor’.

Innovator,creative thinker,entrepreneur.

What does it mean to you? What feelings and thoughts does it evoke? Does it inspire you or fill you with dread? Maybe such thoughts as? Oh someone else going to tell me what i’m doing wrong. all that self help Crap! Right?
 No ! Verywrong.
What can mentoring offer? How can it help you? The real questions is can you take honest advise are you willing to act on recommendation? or at least honestly consider it? Can you take constructive criticism? Hard for us all.
Firstly consider a mentor as some one skilled and experienced in their field. Someone who may well have experienced the highs and lows of success. Someone who is offering help advise guidance.
One would hope that it’s not totally unconditional. The expectation should be on your, our part commitment to do the work make and embrace both change and challenges.
Certainly not for every one. A journey that may well be an emotional roller coaster.
A journey of self discovery.
I think we could all do and indeed benefit from a mentor/life coach from time to time that someone to trust and confide in. That person who can push buttons create positive thought.That person who is not on an ego trip who’s motives are not self motivated or driven.
Many industry professional are committed to offering such help to others. Asking for or seeking out help is hard for some of us.
It’s like being back at school in that class room and not having the courage to raise that hand and ask that question. Why is it so hard ? yes i know from personal experience how hard this can be !
{ enough on mentoring for now but a subject i think i will investigate more into}
Can any of us honestly say we know everything? We are on top of your game? fully motivated on a daily bases giving your all? keeping up to date and current?

Or like most of us you have off days or are you having more off days than on? Is going to work hard work? Is being at work real work maybe even to the point of resentment?

If you missing that excitement that creative buzz, passion, drive, motivation, then something is missing what could that be? Time to take a look in the one on one with who you see time!

Well now it’s time to be honest. What ever you work situation environment this might be the Salon.  Maybe your self employed. In the case of the salon sometimes its so easy to get wrapped up in the moment to busy, that training product updates fall the way side.

If you self employed taking the time to invest in your self also gets put to the side normally because of time and money issues. If this is the case then we convince our selves that we are doing Ok. We are up date it’s so easy for us to make excuses.The only problem with this is at the end of the day we are hurting our selves and our business we are also and most importantly letting our clients down standards of service drop.

With so many new products constantly coming onto the market it’s so important to be informed and knowledgeable both for your own sake and that of your clients.

Keratin hair relaxing products, new Ammonia free colour lines. This would be classed as product knowledge. Then  our skills techniques from colouring to cutting then we have the technical side of the equation the how and why’s sometimes gets neglected finding time just to reconnect with others share idea’s stay informed.

Final we have informal seminar’s that are structured to help with salon management, team and staff motivation, Service Consultation and sales.

It is my Opinion that all of the above should be reviewed and although not possible to address all  topic’s at once a plan should be drawn up to keep your business you staff  healthy and strong call it business and personal inventory or attitude adjustment.

Bad habits form slowly over time but fear not, habits can be broken just takes a willingness change a recognition of habit and indeed skill level finally a little work.

It can take as little as three weeks to break habits and start a journey onto a new path of self discovery talent and skill building sharing.

Young talent training in hairdressing

Yesterday I thought i was sharing  part of my experience with some young level 1 NVQ students  but no the exact opposite i was learning from them they were without knowing it giving to me. Opening my eyes to wants fears and aspirations. Giving in a look into the world and the challenges of these young people and the career they have chosen. I thank them all.

The hair Salon and stylists. We all know that the hair industry has many different bodies watching over it supervising it. It has a standard of training that dictate reaching certain levels of the prescribed government training standards these we know here in the UK as NVQ in other countries this differs. We have academies. We have trained teaching professionals, we have colleges and apprenticeship schemes. We have teams of dedicated professional training and supporting these young stylists. We have professional bodies such a HABIA and many dedicated professional educators and consultants.

We have a wealth of young people attracted to our industry. Today I had the pleasure and the opportunity to spend some time with a class of these young training stylists. They have high expectation. They are lead to believe that they can be very successful in some cases reach celebrity status. Sadly this is not always realistic so many young people have expectations but don’t always realise just how committed they have to be to reach the top or how long that journey may take.

Training and sharing with these youngsters is a reminder of how hard it is starting out having left school facing the world and the idea of training for a new career. Tuff we have to be supportive and honest ready to help and offer advice. we asked if they would volunteer for experience in a salon they were all committed and would swap time for opportunity. This raises the question salon owners why don’t you work with your local college give these young stylists a chance! who knows you might just have the next big talent to discover and it would be so rewarding.

This being said my question and one i hope to explore in the coming weeks is. Why do standards vary so much from salon to salon? Why is the skill level so varied? Why does so much badly done hair wonder the streets?

My goal is to go into some salons discuss and report on this. Share a true and real version of how stylist see their industry. what their expectations are.

When wondering around my local area. I often take time to look into the salon’s I pass. It’s a habit caused from many years in our industry and a natural inquisitiveness. The questions i always ask my self are as follows:

Is it inviting? Does it say hey worth a look? Does it have kerb appeal?  You see it’s all about image and first impression you only get to make that once. be that the salon appearance to the first impression we as stylist make.

For me the big no no’s are. Staff standing in and around reception, chatting amongst themselves. Standing out side the front door smoking !!! A window so full of products you cannot see in. In many cases if you have a window work station make sure. The person using the chair is projecting everything that says who you are,what you can do.It’s a stage.

Decor,Street appeal. Image to be totally honest, so many places look a little sad and little neglected. Sadly the staff look the same, Yes they go to work they do their job, But it’s just that a job. Staff all looking professional well dressed and up beat.this does not have to be a uniform. But a keen sense of style and professionalism should be expected and presented. We after all in the fashion business. We are what we present we are the product that is us!!

It should be so much more it’s time for some honest reflection it’s time to make some changes are you ready?

These changes can be in Image. Appearance both salon and staff. Attitude. Service. Consultation. Clients get excited by change and improvements. This leadership from owners managers will lead to staff becoming more involved and committed it can and should be a exciting time.

Staff be they trainee’s or long standing staff members should challenge them selves to look and be professional at all times. Remember that we are in the service industry. Challenge our selves stay current with products, both retail and for salon use.

                              It’s all about style Image

We work in fashion we create image. Project that when you get ready for work, You don’t go out partying on Friday night looking anything but your best, So why would you not apply the same attention to presentation of ones self when going to work?

It’s all about. Image that first impression.Be it salon or self. think as the work place as stage you are the star act that way!!! My spending a afternoon with level one students hungry to learn frustrated that the process can seem slow wanting to know everything be hands on. This creative minds to to be stimulated and yet given structure and order a firm foundation of skill and knowledge delivered in an honest manner.

I write this with thanks to the students for being patient attentive and yet opening my eyes to how daunting and challenging the journey they are on must seem.

We all have one major things in Common. Do you know what that is ? We all work in the service Industry. It is our job to offer the highest standards of. Service and Consultation.

This is a team effort an experience that starts as the client walks through the door and is greeted by receptionist and salon assistance. As stylists to offer the best advise supported by knowledge and skill.

On going training product knowledge updates are all key factors to staying current and on the cutting edge of our industry.

We are in the business of making clients feel and look good,making them happier!

It is a know fact. That 50% of clients that visit a salon for the first time do not return! Why is this? What is going wrong? We all spend so much time money and energy trying to get new business. We forget about the existing business. We forget to live in the now! Striving and Trying to build up a strong clientele. But constantly driven to look for new clients new ways to attract clients. We use mediums such as Groupon It attracts new business potentially new clients.But can you keep them? There is no magic bullet.

We need to take an honest look at what is going wrong. This has to be done both as. A Salon as a team and as an individual.

 

Clients leave for many reason’s. Poor service. Bad job. Personality issues. Pricing. Oh and a friend telling them about the new wonder salon down the road. That being everything yours is not!

In all of the above instances the only one person who cannot be blamed is. The client. It is our job to cherish care and build up a trusting honest relationship. One that comes for giving the ultimate service.

Change improvements. Salon service. Image. Increased business all possible but it does take. Hard work, Humility, Honesty and caring.

 

Here is a little personal reflection. But it get’s a point home.

earlier this year my dear life friend my dog Zip very sad he is still much missed. He was almost 10 years old. 3 years ago we moved to the Uk from Canada leaving my clients and hair business behind. There is a reason a lesson in this tale

I have stayed in touch with many of my clients will still chat stay connected. It’s easy! How? With so many Media tools available to us. Well I learned a huge lesson in Zip’s passing sad as it was. How loved and how many clients remembered him. The salon. The service. So many postings with messages from people who’s hair I have not done for three years. But they still care they still remember the time we spent together.  They left message s reflecting on this time spent. Why? Because they wanted to. Because they cared. Because we had built up relationships still strong today.

Service Consultation the key.

We get so wrapped up in booking. Being busy. Fitting in as many clients as possible. That we forget that the person that client in the chair is the most important thing. Think less about the money more about the service for one takes care of the other.

Look after that client give the most attentive service make them feel special she will tell friend and so it builds.

Easy just repeat the same system over and over treat every client the same every time as if it were a first visit and they are really special. Fool proof!

Service .Consultation. Communication. Professional product advise. note not sales advise educate the product it will sell it self.

Trust,Respect,Honesty,Relationships,Commitment.Advise,Service,Consultation,

Communication,The keys.

Do you take the time to really listen and give honest advise?

Would you suggest a different look ? If what was being requested would not look good?

Would you suggest not doing a chemical process if you thought condition to poor?

Would you stay late working with a client until happy?

Have boundaries a 15 min rule for lateness no exception ! why it’s easy the knock on effect over the day creates you running late others being effected.

You see both clients and us as stylist have to be accountable for our actions. Make a decision live with the consequences. Mutual respect. Open lines of communication.

Give sound solid honest advise even if it’s not what the clients wants to hear. Do not take on work that is not represent your own high standards and explain why?
