How important is the hair client consultation?

It is my goal to create a platform that over time will become a place to share thoughts review hair colour and products.

The Consultation your time to shine:

I’ve been a fully trained stylist for over 20 years have been fortunate enough to have experienced many aspects of the hairdressing Industry.
In the many years working i have been working with clients. I like to think that nothing shocks or surprises me. Many have shared with me every issue that a client can bring to the chair.

I’ve seen young women come in with orange roots and white ends. I’ve seen red roots and black ends. I’ve seen hair looking like a traffic light from violet to blue, colors that usually are reserved for flowers.When I see these mistakes colour failures in some case hair nightmares one cannot help but feel oh so sorry  for the client to which these hair are attached.

Normally when the color mistakes are so apparent the truth is impossible to ignore the poor client is so embarrassed upset and apologetic that one  really wants to help and fix this problem if at all possible.

The client usually admits that it was a money issue a crazy moment or a few drinks with that got out of hand with a friend it seemed like a good idea at the time! found an old box under the vanity and thought it would be a great time at 3 in the morning to “streak” their hair. I don’t have any issues helping these clients for me the challenge is correcting it the reward is success a happy client she made an honest mistake at home and now seeks professional help a humbling experience in it’s self. Usually they have learned from the mistake  after all we all make mistakes first time one feels sorry for them repeat offenders well they are on their own, most however are more than willing to go through the steps to fix the situation.

Here is an example of a normal client consultation:

A client is looking for some sort of chemical service, not always a major change; let’s say going lighter.  We will take a close look at the hair during the consultation and figure out what we need to do to get as close to the desired result without damaging the hair.  It is at this time when we’ll ask the client their past history.  whilst at the same time looking and feeling for indications of damage, If we see any sort of banding, we know some sort chemical affected the hair.

It’s a pretty simple fact, hair grows approximately 1/2 inch a month.  If there is a any sort of line of demarcation, we know there was something “done” to the hair,  and we can tell when it happened by how far it is away from the scalp.  When we ask the client why this band exists, they can’t give a reason.  When we’d tell them that something had to be put in their hair to create this band they will not admit to anything.  To be fair with so many over the counter products these days misleading the consumer it is possible that they were unaware the product used would cause this issue.  In some cases one would repeatedly ask the question and they’ll repeatedly plead their innocence/ignorance. Stale mate helps no one!

Here’s some information everyone needs to know.

Anything from a box color to a highlighting shampoo that causes any visible difference in your hair color has permanently altered the hair structure. Sun-In or anything like that, especially highlighting shampoos and conditioners have any variety of alkaline chemicals that diffuse your natural pigment.  Beware of these products since they may contain sodium hydroxide which is relaxer. Any color from a box that is made from 2 or more components that are mixed together have some sort of peroxide component.  Peroxide oxidizes your natural pigment, so if there is any alkaline in the formula, you will get lift. Many box colors say that they last 24 shampoos simply put if your color is changed by a box and if you grow out roots, it is not temporary the hair structure has been permanently affected. When hair is colored or receives any chemical service it is permanently affected till it is is cut off.

You may have correction to re colour blonde hair with brown pigment, it may be a perfect colour match  but the hair still has any inherent damage caused by the initial service in this case going blonde. As a client try and be as open as possible the more history the better  their is no advantage in trying to hide any chemical service that you have introduced into their hair.   there is no reason to hide any details no matter what the box says informed decisions are easier to make with all the information at  hand and every thing must be taken into consideration.  When we ask you questions about what has happened to your hair for the past year or so, we need to know everything so we can make the right decisions for your services.

Next time you come in to get any chemical service done be completely honest with your colorist or  as a stylist you are doing a consultation make sure you ask all the right question. We can read the history of your hair and there is no need for deception.  After all, we have your best interests in mind.  As they say; the truth will set you free. a lie may break your hair!

I think that it might be time to share a journey taken by myself into building and establishing a home based hairdressing business. Without any advertising fully booked successful in one year lets call it 0 to 50 that was the turn over year one.

My Journey:

At the time I was working as an educator and platform artist for a large North American hair product and hair colour company.Whilst really enjoying the shows.The travel.The events it had it’s down time and just doing salon hair colour education update was not challenging enough. I decided to set up a salon at home to fill in the down time and keep doing hair.This would be a small one man business built using my skills creativity and knowledge. My mandate would be to offer the highest standard of. Hair colouring. Colour correction, and razor cutting.

I would be using the skills and knowledge that educations had provided me with. My goal and vision was  to build up a strong clientele a loyal following. Built up on recommendation word of mouth. No advertising very defined boundaries and work ethics and working hours. I will cover boundaries, working hours and indeed charges as we move on.

Have a business model a Vision:

This business model was not conceived on a whim it was built on experience gained over many years in the Hairdressing industry. Ask your selves this question. Why do we spend so much, time, money and energy looking for. New clients.Promoting the salon generally searching for that quick fix of success. Those big fully booked pay out days? When all the success we could ever want is right at our fingers tips.

What is this secret there is not one common sense!

Here are some easy tips that work and we will re visit and cover in some depth.

*High Standard of service.

*Honest consultation.

*Friendly but professional attitude.

*Skilled and knowledgeable.

*Affordable pricing.

*Regular hours.

*No waiting.

*Trust and defined Boundaries-house /salon rules.

*Very personal one on one service. keeping up to date client records history formulations.

The keys to being very successful with a business that builds and maintains it self. keep it simple so lets go thorough the list in some depth.

To start this business i had to draw on my past experience with hair salons. Having managed a hair salon in Central London experienced ownership i had a good idea about business set up.

Experience of working with salons in Ontario, Vancouver and on Vancouver Island also helped me set up this small business. Contacts and relationships made with sales representatives also helps. Yes reps can be your friend.

When staring a business: It is very important to get some advise from certain bodies.

*Bank business account

*Accountant

* Distributor

* check into Licenses, registration that me be required.

* keep clear records,invoices and receipts.

High standards of service:

What does this mean to me. It’s being attentive. It’s being welcoming. Its the atmosphere.The scene you set and create. This was me projecting me. Who I am. How I work. I would think of my salon as my space, as my play room, my sand box.

Service:

This is being. Attentive. Caring. Willingness to listen. To be honest. Ask the right question. Make your client feel at easy comfortable. This is so important it sets the scene for open and honest discussion that all important consultation.

I would also take this time whilst getting them settled to explain how I work and why. Give a brief history of my self and career my belief and mandate.

Time to shine:

This is a good time to show how knowledgeable you are and also show a little authority on the subject matter. That being hair and colouring. Of course answer any general questions that may arise. It is also a good time and way to assess the client. To get a feel for who they are. What their expectation might be and so how demanding they may be. We will touch more on this.

This moves nicely on to Honest Consultation.

This is such an important time to have the art of conversation and use and asses so much. The key is to be frank and honest about  the clients goals expectation. It is this time that you get to ask questions get a history of past services.

It is your time to assess the condition the look. You start to get an idea of what might or might not be possible. Remember the art of the consultation is to get your client to open up not just about past hair colour and style. But  you can also lead the conversation asking the questions to get the client to open up. Instead of. What do you want? How do you feel about? What would you like to see? In a perfect world. How do you see you style and colour? Remember. Honesty on your part as the stylist is the key.

Then there are the liars. or mistruth tellers!

I know this is harsh, but usually when you ask someone a direct question and they knowingly misinform you, that’s a lie.  As a stylist how can we make an informed decision to fix something when blatantly given the wrong information. In most cases they have been deceived by marketing adverts and promotion that suggest an easy to use instant make over in a box trouble is these kits cannot cover and address every hair situation or scenario it can be complicated! from a stylist point of view we need to know the truth in order to perform the right service. This is not possible when a client make a choices not to give all the information or answer question honestly.

The main thing not to forget is why the client is sitting in front of you.What can you do for her! The client, service, consultation, listening, honesty, humility, staff training and continued Education updates for all staff.

In some cases after a consultation it is ok to suggest that giving the hair a break from chemical service is the only way forward. If they will not commit to this. Then take my advise stop!

If a clients has hair that is really badly done. Over processed damaged beyond help. Unless they want to listen to you take your advise. If you don’t feel that you can improve on this. If it will not be an advert for you.Then why would you get involved it’s ok to say No!

If it’s is not going to be a good advert for you. Not going to be representative of your talent and ability. Why get involved?

Consider this:

Badly done over processed hair. As soon as you agree to fix it you are taking responsibility for all that has been done in the past! Consider is it worth it! If you decide to take this on them make them sign a client waive release form.

As a stylist consider are you fixing this. Because you can or do you have something to prove is this. I can do! Or EGO driven. For me having boundaries being professional is being able to say No it’s Ok it’s honest it’s real it’s professional!

Friendly welcoming but professional:

Is this possible you may ask your self? Yes it is, it’s the key to success. For it makes your client feel special wanted important. Now you don’t have to be all gushy nor false. It’s more about keeping a conversation real and about them.

That being said sharing some of your own life is also ok. Just not that. Did you have a nice week end are you going on Holiday stuff!!!

It’s all about the three things to remember about your clients. People. Places. Things. listen to what they tell you take it in remember key things work life family it show you care and do listen.

Keeping it professional:

That is giving sound advise not bowing to silly demands those boundaries established are still key.

For example when they re approach the subject of cutting their husbands hair by stroking your ego saying how good you are. Thank them remind them that you don’t do guys hair. but say nice try though! I would always say i don’t enjoy male company however nice they are!

Remember key points:

keep good records when was last visit. last hair style the look, ultimate goal. If in doubt keep notes review before they arrive.

Its ok still shows you care. You are building trust. The three R rule works very well when building these trusting relationships.

Salon discounting is it good for business?

                         Salon Discounting is it good for business?

                                                Does it pay?

How much discounting goes on in your salon?  Have you ever considered what this might be costing you and your business?  Be honest! The answers is a lot!

How this happens.

How does this discount come about. Stylist like to reward their clients make them feel special,but at who’s expense?. This happens all to often in fact i have been guilty of it when work in a salon it’s such a easy trap to fall into.

A regular client comes in for a full head of foils. You like and enjoy time spent with this client. maybe she tips well? When the service if done and it’s time to pay you say ‘I have just charged you for a half head today’ Da! Why. She came to get her hair done. She expected great service. She expected a great job. Did you short change her with the foils? Did you rush her through? Then why give the discount, are you not worth your fee? Where do you draw the line?

Another great one is a client is have a tuff time money is tight, [well it is for us all]  but you feel sorry for her. After the service you say i’ve take £10.00 or $10.00 off your bill today hope things get better for you. A great gesture but what ever she is going through she chose to get her hair done she knew the cost.

Who’s money are you giving away by no charing the full amount? The salon’s yes certainly and your own as your commission will be less.

In both the above cases you are putting out messages . One price is subject to change if we or I so chose.

I know we over charge or are slightly expensive but i can be flexible!!! NO NO NO

What we need to see at the end of the day good days work good days takings! It’s not me not being caring or understanding it’s business it’s drawing a line.If your a member of staff paid on commission your short changing your self and the salon. If your an owner what do you think this might be costing you weekly or monthly?

Making clients feel special is what we should be doing every day every visit. Doing an exceptional job each and every time. We are in the business of service we offer skill and expertise. We you don’t need to cheapen you self with discounts.

Consider both as management and indeed a staff team if you did not discount and put all the money aside, what could it be used for? In house training, going to an education event or seminar, new pice of equipment. Things that both you as owners or stylists team members can and will benefit from.

These newly learned skills or new equipment will in the end add to your skill level and improve the service you offer. Ultimately the client benefits.

 Hard nut to crack!    

This is a hard nut to crack in any salon. For owners when you have a staff meeting it may not go down very well. You might be thought of as being mean penny pinching. Stylist’s you have to think about the business side of this if it were your salon would you want hundreds of pounds or dollars a month just not coming into the business?

To end this starts with a group meeting draw aline no more as of now! If you have a receptionist then she will be key to stopping this. If not then careful monitoring of the day book the services being done and fee;s charged will be required, a little re education. You will notice a difference over avery short time it adds up!! Consider this when an existing client recommends you to a friend or work mate  do you want to be recommended for.

A. the great service and job done!

B. the great discount that the friend will now expect?

                                    Discounting is money floating away!

1. Discounting .

This is taking off either a pound or dollar value or a percentage of the clients service bill total. This is relatively easy to find and stop from happening.

2. Undercharging.

Often occurs when discounting is trying to be covered up. It can happen as full head of foils charged as half head or T section, Cut blow dry charged as wet cut, it goes on not always easy to find, not always easy to stop 

3.Discriminating Discounting.

This is a really odd kind form of discounting because in this instance you discriminate against your good clients that pay you full price for their services and they visit regularly. While other clients that only have some of the salons services and visit irregularly are discounted every single visit. You know the students, the senior citizens, the children and so on. You have a consistent policy across the board.

4 A Welcome or incentive discount.

Another one that I see a great deal of. Special opening offer 30% off any one service on first visit. What does this say? We are expensive.We over charge, but come in a for a one off cheap job!!! your new your exciting your professional your offering something new and exciting why cheapen this with an opening discount!!!  

                   Front of service friendly, efficient, professional, receptionist!


When you discount or undercharge where do you think this money come from?

It doesn‟t come from the money you would have paid for the salon rent, it doesn‟t come from the money you pay for your professional products and it certainly doesn‟t come off the wages you pay your team.

The discounted money comes out of your profit. That‟s the only place it can come from. And the profit is essentially what you‟re in business for, isn‟t it? The discount that‟s given to your clients is taken from the money needed to grow your. If you feel that you need to appeal to all markets and so wallets then this is why or when you have a structure of fee’s based on experience.

An example of this that works well would be.

A newly qualified stylist might get all the students Why? Well one newly qualified the charges might be more affordable to a student, students have friends , students will not always be students. The goal being build up trust respect grow together as one gains more experience the fee’s go up as the student becomes qualified she they can afford a little more.win win no discount!

Make you staff aware that when discounting they are not only reducing their fee so their commission but they are giving away your profits.  The profit you need to grow and support your business.

                               A happy client happy with look happy with the service happy to pay!

I have started working with Karen and David and their team at salon success. It’s a relationship we have been building for well over a year now one built on mutual respect and trust.  The support material they have and offer is first class and comes from. Salon knowledge and professional experience gained from years in our industry.

For me  life is a journey one of learning and growing an adventure. To fully understand the ‘Salon success’ Philosophy and program. I have for the last three weeks embarked on being a member of the online line business support and mentoring program. 

This has involved committing to actively using both reading material, listening to the audio support material. All supplied and doing the suggested exercises eye opening even to me a seasoned professional. it’s easy to read and listen to but guess what. Like every thing the work has to be done to succeed so it’s a challenge. Worth while yes it has been. It motivated me to write this !!!

Much of what i write and indeed what Karen and David at salon success talk about is common sense and yet it so easily gets lots or forgotten about.We all need little reminders from time to time some of my suggestions might sound harsh even uncaring not the case.

I love this profession and industry and indeed respect greatly all the clients i have worked with over the years some who still remain friends however much distance is between us. That respect is built on me offering sound honest advise caring and charging a fair price for my time and skill.

If it’s built on being cheap affordable or discounted then it will fail as a relationship.

Past business how it worked without discounting ! value quality skill service! 

I used to work doing education on the road a great deal but i also had for down time a home based salon it was a great business specialising in colour and colour correction. I charged an hourly rate occasionally a new recommended client would book for an a consultation prior to booking an appointment. this was how i worked.

Moving on hourly rate and not having the huge running cost of a traditional salon made what i did great value for client kept me fully booked weeks in advance.

However if a client ever said i was recommended  to you by ****** she said you great really know your stuff and your sound so much cheaper than the salons in town!! Hum I would say really thank you for coming but this is not going to work for me! If your only hear because it sounds cheap then i’m not the guy for you!!  I built up a business and a reputation of on not being cheap! it works it really works.

Natural Herbal organic hair colour.

Looking At Hair colour products!

I do not claim to know or have knowledge about. All there is to know about all the different hair colours on the market. I do however try and keep up to date I do try and get information on all products I come across. Or that seem new and exciting

I tried to find out about INOA when it came out, I contacted L’oreal  they did not get back to me I asked them to explain why MEA is so new and exciting: no reply!

If MEA has bee around for so long how is it such a new innovation? Is it just a re hash of another type of alkaline? We are now flooded with adds marketing on so many ‘Ammonia free products’ without any hint of the re placement chemistry or what it does!  So why don’t we question why do we trust!

This revolution is now already in many of the home colour kits that promote quick fix Ammonia free colour! is this really professional? just because it’s say’s ‘Herbal’ and has a natural plant extract photo on the box does not make it healthier than anything else.

Lets be clear it’s marketing.It’s selling you what you are being conditioned to ask for!

The question I ask is simple. Is it really a new innovation? Is it really any less harmful than Ammonia? Thoughts on new MEA as engine to drive colour instead of Ammonia? MEA is derived from Ethanolamine !  Also Denatured Alcohol used as ammonia substitute why does Ammonia get such a bad wrap just because it smells ?

Ammonia gas can dissolve in water to form Ammonium Hydroxide, which is highly corrosive.

This can occur on the skin, eyes and lungs if large enough amounts of gas are released. 

(Source MSDS sheet from Airgas Inc. Ammonia in small doses does not present a health risk.}

Many colours, including Matrix, use ammonia and monoethanolamine.

The argument that MEA has not been used long enough to be judged “safe” is completely untrue, it has been used for at least 30 years in hair colour.

There is no proof that Ammonia washes off the hair fully or that MEA is any better or indeed washes out it is suggested the Silicon oil does remain in the hair ! whats in that oil?

Breakage, fading, damaged, over-processed hair will occur when using chemical based color. Try Organic Color Systems for the best, most gentle, natural, organic results. Good luck! Don’t give up on your desired hair color, just take a different approach.

In many cases Ammonia becomes more damaging depending on its strength higher levels certainly open the cuticle more! but in low levels and controlled  0.4% 1.2% found in some professional colour is in my opinion safe to use and can be trusted to attain good colour results.

They even offered to provided a press release. Nice but that is telling me what to say. I asked for some more information i sent a list of questions: no replyI have to think it’s new packaging maybe new formulation but maybe not that innovative?

Mike, I found a comment you wrote on Organic Color Systems web site.  Our company Saphir Hair Care have developed an Ammonia-Free color line that I would love to get your feedback on.  I would love to send you some samples in hope that you would give us honest feedback on our product.  Thank you for your time.

Months later product never arrived so cannot give any up date.I still await an organic hair colour company to provide some product to try and education material that is open and transparent in both chemistry use and expectation/final results.

I have replied so hope that i hear back from them ,so i can share a review with you all

To be fair  I have been to the the Organic hair colour company web site they do have a very informative web site but it still raised questions, questions that need answering. although i tried to talk with some one  the person was always to busy

Questions

Why denatured grain alcohol? formulation for Grey coverage? why no colour balancing?

One of my big concerns with Grey formulations is that they are formatted to address the Grey Issues great for the roots, but why run that same formula through the rest of the hair. you cannot have generic formulation for Grey hair ie 50% what ever the amount of Grey!

At issues is the fact that the formula is for Grey hair and mix of natural  and target colour also level of peroxide so in running this into the mid lengths and ends two things happen.

One still running peroxide through hair that has already been coloured this promotes over processing and drab colour. Also when hair has been previously coloured it does not need a formulation with peroxide colour balance would be Demi formulation also no need for Natural series in the formulation.

An example of this might be 50%5N[natural] 50%5BR [Beige Red] putting this formulation on the roots of someone with 50% Grey would be fine for a roots application, but not to leave the said formula in a bowl and then running it through the mid lengths and ends! The ends only need the 5BR formula and don’t need the now slightly gone off peroxide in said formula,

As a rule of thumb for Grey issues what ever the % of Grey is the amount of Natural series required in a formula, having said this when doing colour it is always advisable to know the base formulation of any Natural series with relation to warmth control. Grey hair still has Pigment so the stronger the peroxide the more warmth you will expose. I would suggest doing a pre fill and using as lower volume of peroxide as  possible start with 10vol 3%.

although trying it still misleading to call it all natural and certainly call the formulation education material up to date!

In preaching health and condition they need to look at what they preach and teach we as stylist need to keep asking these questions!

If we don’t have the knowledge if we don’t ask the question nothing ever changes we get what we are allow our selves to be sold and taken in by.

As quick review our options are.

MEA Monoethanolamine:

Can be used as a selective absorber and plays an important role in the production of Ammonia! MEA Monoethanolamine obtained from the reaction of ammonia and Ethylene. Ethylene a bio fuel so we are back to grain Alcohol! but derived from grain so natural! does this make it ok ? would you think that good for hair?

Definition:

Alcohol denatured:

A general term for organic ingredients that contain the OH (hydroxyl) group. Alcohols differ substantially in their properties ranging from water soluble solvents like isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
Sounds good too!

Definition:

Ammonia:

An alkaline ingredient used in some permanent hair color. Ammonia is an ingredient that results in a chemical action that decolorizes the hair. A colorless, pungent gas, NH3,  first step in the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia is generated by fish urine and by the decay of dead fish and plant material. It is perhaps the deadliest agent to tropical fish. Care must be made to ensure that the ammonia levels stay at zero. Many professional hair colours have 0.4 to 1.2% Ammonia and some companies have levels way above this the higher the level the more damage can be caused!

So the choice dead decaying fish or fermenting Grain both really a natural source.

Professional Hair Colour Companies have to be help accountable to inform and be transparent about the formulation of there products and the education material should be informative and up to date.

Now, just a few months later, Some salons are coming to a rude awakening – that the chosen product line is not ammonia freeand is clearly labeled as containing ammonia hydroxide.  Imagine seeing a new client who is a cancer survivor, a chemotherapy patient, or simply allergic to ammonia and then assuring them that the professional hair color product you use is ammonia free.  What could you possibly tell them after their treatment in which you unknowingly applied ammonia hydroxide to their scalp?  Would they sympathize with you if you told them that you bought the marketing hype but failed to read the ingredients label?  Salon professionals are licensed professionals and as such have an obligation and duty of care when dealing with the trust a client places in their hands to provide them with a safe and positive treatment.  It stands to reason that a minimum level of care begins with knowing the chemicals being applied to their scalp.

What is exceptional is that salon professionals everywhere are using this product without reading the ingredient labels of the products in the line.  The ingredients label for I certain post shampoo recommended for post-color shampoo with  “no ammonia” line clearly contains ammonia hydroxide as indicated in their ingredients list on the left While one side of the bottle indicates its contents as “Innovative No Ammonia” the other sides lists ammonia hydroxide on its legally required and government regulated ingredients label. always read directions always read formulation never trust the sales rep! do your own research ask questions? Keep asking question until you get the right answers.

Over the new year driving back from Scotland we decided to split our journey and stop over at a  B+B. The place was immaculate very well decorated everything one would look for in a B+B that is until meeting the people running it. It was so apparent that they were not happy or comfortable in the service industry. Boring sterile none creative a real put off. They really did not like people or serving them it was a effort  Don’t be like this!

I write this to point our that we choose our profession but much more we have to love it for it plays and takes up such a huge part of our lives. Trust me when i say if you are just doing hairdressing because it’s a job it will reflect in your attitude and the standard of the work you produce.Ultimately your lack of success. Always be true and honest about wants and expectations!

Time for Action:

Now you have completed your training been through college or an academy done an apprenticeship. Maybe you are in your early years of working in a salon starting to get experience in being part of a team working with the public getting an understanding of the service industry. What does and can the future hold for you?

Most importantly learning about people and understanding giving honest advise. How to listen to them learn the art of consultation. communication. That realisation that you we are the product! How we dress, What we project, our image all the part of the package that says this is me i’m here ready to help and advise! What can i do for you.

Face up to challenges embrace them think of the salon as a stage your a key player maybe the star attraction though i would rather be a key player!!!

You have trained for this new chosen profession worked hard don’t get disillusioned in those early days of understanding the dynamic’s of. How a salon runs and works. Why do so many new young stylist leave become disillusioned or stay with it but with resentment and anger. Because of high expectation in those early years as a junior stylists, when trying to be excepted and get established in a salon.

What next is the world really your Oyster ? Can you really make it big can all your dreams come true happiness wealth success? or what ever else you dream of attaining! what is the key. Is it possible? I think with hard work commitment and realistic vision everything is possible.

Hard work this involves continued updating of skills and technical ability. Staying focused and motivated. Being a team player. maybe working with a mentor or  stylist you look up to.

Raise that hand ask that question seek out the answers you need Offer that hand as support be a team player. Extend that hand it say’s follow me you can trust me!

The one and only answer is you and you alone can either put in the work be honest with your self about your ability your passion. What you are prepared to do to succeed possibly excel above others to have that edge.

So you can either blame others for. Poor training blame your self for not pay attention or be really honest with your self and enter into a program of self discovery and skill improvement.

A journey to improve your hands on skills lean how to understand what true service is. Are you ready to put ego aside invest in your self and your future. Become fully booked successful and enjoy your career get the rewards that hard work commitment attention to detail can afford you.

The biggest change of career for young stylist comes in the first three years after training graduation this is a sad waste of talent skill training time and money.

Be positive and up beat face and embrace challenges don’t let your career go down the toilet!

New year, new challenges in the salon for the industry

What better way to start the new year than with a little reflection and honesty.Honesty about where we are. How we can change and improve things. How we can make change and embrace it. Turn this negative economy into a positive out look for the coming year.

We all have the power to make and embrace change and challenges sometime s it can and will seem very daunting.

I have decided to share with you some of my thoughts on the hair industry for it has played such a huge part in my journey. I hope you find it interesting and that evokes both thought and questions.

It is my firm belief that in this day and age and in such competitive times the only way to increase and expand your client base is through referral and recommendation it is so important to retain both new and existing clients. This is achieved through excellence in. Service, communication and technical ability, Knowledge. with a degree of humility and honesty.

This can only be done through High standards of Service, communication and consultation skills. education, team work and effective leadership by those who are training new stylists. I know that many who follow or read my postings might find that i keep to many specific topics . But they are all so relevant it’s so easy for us to forget get complacent. From young trainee to senior stylist we have to stay focused on the job and tasks at hand.Our clients and the service we offer!

                                       Service and Communication

                                     So let’s take a look into a salon!

One of the main reason for client loss from a salon is dissatisfaction from either the service or the final result. It is a fact that 50% of clients visiting a salon for the first time do not return! Why? That’s a huge loss of client’s and repeat business

Taking short cuts and compromising one’s standards and professional ethics leads to client dissatisfaction.

When a client leaves a salon unhappy! How much damage can they do to your reputation?

When a client leaves happy they will recommend you to others.They will get stopped in the street. Potentially a happy client will recommend you to 5 friends who in turn have 5 friends.

You are building your business on your communication skills. creativity. knowledge.The best way to build a loyal clientele is by being. Sympathetic to a clients needs, listening, professional consultation and by giving honest advise. Making the experience exceptional from start to the finish of your time together.

Did you know that the experience is as important as the than the service performed! clients remember. The service. The attention paid to them. they are paying to me made to feel wanted and special. [ Sound advise shared by a fellow professional and friend ]

Guess what an unhappy client can and will do? You got it – 5 friends will leave with them.

We have to be on top of products new techniques. We cannot only trust in what the sales rep or Manufacturer tells us.

These days we have to know and understand more than ever. The chemistry of our products the effects that they can have, how they will interact with other products.The client who wants to switch from home colour to professional. The Client. Who has put henna on her hair buts wants to switch to professional permanent colour! Could she? Should she? or He! what would be your advise? would it be drive by the sale of a corrective service or honest advise?

                                  Having that edge offering that bit more! 

After building up a strong client base with strong client retention. Do you ever wonder why? Every five to six weeks you have a somewhat quiet week with not a lot booked? You start to ask yourself the question? What am I doing wrong? Am I losing my touch? Well let’s see.

We have all had one of these. That crazy Saturday could be any day you fitted all those extra clients in. You were on a role and had a huge money day.

You call your boss and say. Guess what I did today. You leave work on cloud nine thinking that’s it. Every day could be like this. I really feel I have made it.

Now let’s just think about this and break it down. Was it really a success?

You took short cuts. You compromised your clients who had services booked. You kept clients waiting. You rushed through things. Guess what – you lost clients. Instead of running the show you created chaos and did not give your regular clients your full attention and service. They go else where – and yes. They go with their 5 friends. By having a crazy busy day it cost you. Short term gain meant long term loss. The key is service, attention to detail, and making that client feel special.

                                                       That 6 week Lull!

You will never get beyond having a 5 to 6 week lull until you look beyond the quick hit money-making day.Take care of the clients offering the highest standard of Service.Your takings your wages will follow. Sitting around does not look good for business nor does it inspire clients. If your not busy then get busy! as some young trainee’s pointed out to me yesterday.There is always something to do. to look and be busy!!!!!!

                                               Consultation key time:

You need time for the consultation. This is your time to shine. The time that reassures your client that they are special That you are considerate and that you understand their needs and wants. Your client sees you are prepared to take that extra time to use your knowledge to make them feel comfortable and safe in a professional’s hands. It is this service that gets you talked about and recommended. It is this standard of exemplary service that leads to both client retention and recommendation . Those communication and consultation skills.

Mentoring support salon challenges.

With the start of the new year and the challenges that can face us all in these challenging economic times.We all have to able to adapt.The challenges facing both owners and mangers is one of how to steer a salon and business through these unchatered waters. We have to as managers be like the conductor of a large orchestra are team our staff well rehearsed in the role they play but we have to be open and ready for change. like that well practiced orchestra ready to step things up change the temp.switch from that orchestral tempo to jazz ! All businesses and organisation must stay flexible ready to take advantage of new opportunity and challenges.

 Education. Mentoring. Support.

The tools are all available to us but in so many cases we don’t access them. Why is this?Are we really that perfect or is it that we don’t want to expose our weaknesses? Our worst enemy is our self. Admitting that help is needed. Raising a hand saying I don’t know! How do we protect our selves from exposing our weaknesses. Ego and Fear are our worst enemy we must put them aside seek out help, skill training, Education. So many program’s and tools are available to us. Not free but not expensive it’s investing in one’s self it will give you the edge! Those tools and skills you need for success. What form does this help assistance come in? Well hands on teaching, sharing, techniques and skills. Support can come in the form of personal help from qualified skilled consultants and educators both key to spending time with listening to and learning from building up a relationship with.

Then there is the written Books, Education material. Be it new product information, maybe a new colour chart with an education section often not read and studied by stylists. They use the excuse! oh I’m hands on i like to use and feel the product! Back to those faithful friends fear and Ego. A mentor someone with an open mind with many years of experience who can share vision with you listen to you guide and advise help you to reach your goals. This can and will only work with an open mind honesty and willingness to listen do the work! Oh yes I forgot to mention none of this works unless you are committed to the tasking. Parting with some hard earned cash this show commitment. Being prepared to listen, take up the challenges. Do the work reap the rewards.

None of this is an instant fix. it a journey and an adventure built on honesty and trust the skill the experience that can be gained can be beyond your wildest dreams . The doors that can open. The opportunities that can arise. The direction your career can take are immense. The hairdressing Industry. Our chosen profession has so many career paths to choose from as a start sit down list how many different avenues could be open to you .

Such as:

Salon stylist.

Colour technician specialist in colour correction.

Educator for a colour company.

Stage work artistic team. Photographic work.

Cruise liner work.

College lecturing levels of NVQ. Salon sales,

Working for major hair colour company.

Consultant.
